About half of Hong Kong’s 7.4 million people have already been infected with Covid-19, according to an estimate of the damage caused by the deadly omicron wave that’s overwhelmed the city.
Researchers at the University of Hong Kong determined that about 3.6 million Hong Kongers caught the disease through March 14. That’s up from an estimated 1.8 million infections they concluded had developed through March 7 based on disease modeling and an in-depth analysis of the ongoing outbreak.
While the current wave peaked on March 4, many more people will catch Covid before it ends, the researchers said. The total is likely to reach about 4.5 million, they said.
More than 5,100 people will die from Covid by May 1, the researchers forecast, up from an earlier estimate of about 5,010.
Elderly residents of care homes account for 59% of total deaths, they said.
Hong Kong confirmed more than 27,700 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, while 13 private hospitals pledged to reserve a total of 1,000 beds mostly for non-Covid patients to help ease the pressure on the public health care system.
A total of 15,809 cases were logged through a new online government portal by residents using at-home rapid antigen tests, in addition to 11,956 confirmed through polymerase chain reaction screenings, bringing the daily total to 27,765. Hong Kong's overall Covid-19 tally stood at 761,550.

Hong Kong retail sales in April rose 12.1 per cent year on year, marking a slowdown in momentum for the industry’s recovery even as the Covid-19 crisis continued to abate.
A government spokesman attributed April’s growth to the low basis of comparison last year.
“But retail sales volume was still far below its pre-pandemic level, as inbound tourism remained frozen,” he added.

Uptown is the hot place to live catering to young urbanites, millenials, and old guys like me who just like the atmosphere of color, food, arts, and kitsch.
I thought this young fellow was as least as equally as colorful in hair do as the alley wall, and a prime example of one of the denizens of the Uptown area.
Although the high density building blight hit Uptown, and unique buildings torn town to make way for boxy utilitarian looking rabbit warrens, there still are enough of the old buildings , now tastefully refurbished, to make the area truly unique.
The number of new coronavirus infections in Hong Kong reached another record high of 7,533 cases on Monday, as an 11-month-old girl became one of the latest people to die after catching the virus.
By comparison, Singapore, with a population and city size similar to those of Hong Kong, has been reporting record-high numbers of Covid-19 cases, even more than 10,000 cases per day several times. Singaporeans seem to have adapted to the “coexistence” model, and its health care system has not been heavily affected.
“The reason is that the Home Recovery Program for mild cases has mitigated the pressure on Singapore's health care system,” Alex Cook, associate professor at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, told Caixin, noting that this is one of the main differences between the epidemic control approach of Singapore and that of Hong Kong.
From September 2021, Singapore no longer admits all confirmed cases to hospitals or quarantine facilities, and cases with no symptoms or only mild symptoms can recover at home, provided that they must live in separate en-suite rooms with good ventilation, and remain contact-free with fellow residents and deliverymen. According to professor Alex Cook, although Singapore's approach increases the risk of home and community transmission, it frees up more hospital beds and spares medical resources for those who really need them.
However, most Hong Kong people live in cramped spaces, with a per capita living space of only 15.8 square meters, making it difficult to secure separate quarantine spaces if the home recovery program is adopted. Recently, as many cases with mild symptoms could not be hospitalized, all their family members have been infected, making it more difficult to control the epidemic.(www.caixinglobal.com)
Thought this might make an interesting composition. Maybe should have reversed the point of focus. Ill have to work with this more. The color of the car was just perfect for a frame tho.
In the past, due to the rather dark environment of the market, whenever you bought eggs you had to lift them up one by one and hold them in front of a lamp – traditionally with a red lampshade to examine them.
The light passing through the egg shell would reveal a shadow inside, and you could check whether the egg was broken or even hatching into a chick.
In the old market, the most popular red lamp shades became the classic "egg lights" for illuminating eggs. With their unique appearance, they gradually become a symbol of traditional market culture.
So we transformed this classic market lamp shade into a large art installation at the two main entrances on the ground floor. We retained the form and proportions, but scaled the lamps to half the size.
Five hundred of these mini “egg lamp shades” are positioned neatly in a circle and hang from the ceiling at the two main entrances. These traditional red “egg” lamp shades along with modern bronze lamp shades on each side, symbolise the coexistence and integration of traditional and modern markets.

Taken while I was waiting for a memorial Mass to conclude, so I could light and shoot for an assignment.
I've done a few, and posted a couple, of photos that I tone to accentuare how what is old becomes tremendously interesting when shot in a modern day setting.
Which pauses me to think, that we never are "old", we become more "interesting."😉
