The Days We Wear Masks 20210325
Hong Kong reported no locally acquired case today, with six imported new infections, sources said.
If confirmed, it would be the first time in four months since authorities last detected zero local infections in December. (20210327 14:00 The Standard)
Rents in Central, Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok, four of Hong Kong’s major shopping areas, have returned to 2003 levels, when the city’s retail sector largely relied on local spending.

The architecture of the Central Market features beams and columns made of reinforced concrete with a simple design that match the internal environment and activities of the market. The design is based on its function with each detail fulfilling a specific purpose.
Central Market was a plain 4-storey rectangular building without unnecessary decorations. It had rows of glass windows and prominent projecting horizontal canopies highlighting the “Streamline Moderne” style.
In the centre of the building is a rectangular atrium, equipped with horizontal iron windows and rounded corners which encourages natural light and ventilation and improves hygienic conditions and air circulation.
It truly reflects the Bauhaus “form follows function” principle in both substance and spirit.
Central Market is the only surviving example of 1930’s Bauhaus style and contemporary architecture in Hong Kong.

The State Theatre (known as Empire Theatre until 1959) was opened in 1952. This significant example of Post-War Modern Movement architecture had been assessed by Docomomo International as a structure worth preserving due to its importance as a piece of tangible heritage in the North Point region as well as its unique physical construction.
A couple of years ago in 2014, there were concerns among conservationists and North Point residents due to the threat of its demolition in order to redevelop its lot as two high-rise commercial towers. Hence in 2016, the guided-tour agency Walk-In Hong Kong launched a Conservation Advocacy Campaign titled “Save our State” and successfully lobbied the Antiquities and Advisory Board to upgrade its heritage grading status from Grade Three to a Grade One. Recognizing State Theatre’s cultural significance to Hong Kong, New World Development Limited acquired 95% of the complex as its first conservation project.
Update: This article was published in 2014 due to concerns among conservationists and North Point residents due to the threat of its demolition before the official grading by the Antiquities Advisory Board (AAB). Swimmers on Friday said they were excited to be able to go back to public pools after waiting for more than three months.
35 public pools reopened on Friday, operating at 30 percent capacity, as part of the eased social-distancing rules announced earlier.
15 public beaches also reopened on Friday, but the four-people limit on public gatherings and the mask-wearing order remain in force. The barbecue sites at beaches will also remain closed.

After a lecture at the Minneapolis Institute of Art . . . now shortened to the non-descript, confusing, "what-the-hell-is-that", MIA or Mia, I sat across from this young lady sitting beneath that gigantic oil.
Visual contradictions are great photodocumentary fare for me. The contrast betwen this young lady ensconced on what appears to be a vintage wooden Chesterfied, tapping on her smart phone, and the surrounding ambience of simplicity and modern art.
To me it is more than a peaceful co-existence of generations . . . it is an intertwing and engagement of generations . . . one with another and enhancing both.
Fourteen foreign domestic helpers who tested positive for Covid-19 are now urgently seeking shelter, or they will go homeless tonight after they were banished from the employers' homes.
Lawmakers Stephen Wong Yuen-shan staged a press conference on Tuesday afternoon along with PathFinders Hong Kong, Christian Action, and HELP for Domestic Workers, which have been receiving 68 cases so far.
Among them, 56 have tested positive for Covid-19, and only 42 have been taken in by shelters or churches. Most of them saw their contracts terminated by employers after testing positive. Five completed the contracts and tested positive when they were about to leave the city.
The groups said they understand employers' concerns about being infected by the helpers but pointed out that sacking them is not a humane way to deal with the issue.

at the plaza mayor in palma, light spills like gossip down the corridor. a woman on the wall whispers beauty into the void, eternally posed. below her, a man passes - not stopping, not blinking, as if he knows her voice means nothing to him. shadow arches climb the wall like time. every step he takes belongs to the street, not the spectacle.
