The Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex is one of the largest market complexes for perishable goods in Asia. Inaugurated in 1996, it spreads over 296 acres of land and houses blocks for vegetables, fruits and flowers. It accommodates about 3000 shops, most which were shifted out of Chennai city’s central areas like Kothwal chavadi, flower bazaar etc., in the George Town area.

A rare surviving example of the pre-electric mountain method of cooling perishable food, especially dairy products (milk and cheese).
This shallow "house" covers a dugout area of the same size, carefully lined with stone. The stream now flowing nearby was diverted in order to pass through the bottom of the cavern, cooling the interior. The stones in front are a stair leading down to the half-underground door.
I first noticed it about 2006, as the carpenter was starting to construct the wooden upper part, and I had a chance to examine the old interior. The whole affair sits right beside the paved road, across from the Carter-Swain House. It no longer connects with that property, although I suspect it originally did.
SEIU 721 members who work for the City of Riverside and County, gathered unwrapped toys and non-perishable food for this year's Holiday Toy and Food Drive. The inland members along with various executive board members, RPOA and IBEW 47, came together on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Bryant Park in Riverside, to celebrate and donate the goods to Olive Crest, a non-profit foster service organization. Central wholesale markets, established by local governments under the Wholesale Market Law, sell fresh foods indispensable to out daily life such as fish, vegetables, fruit, meat and flowers. It is difficult to store perishable foods for a long period as the spoil easily. In addition, the production of perishables is greatly affected by natural conditions such as the weather, so the price is subject to greater fluctuation than other goods. So the wholesale market, standing between producers and consumers, promotes the smooth distribution of perishables and contributes to stabilization of diet through the fair and speedy transactions between wholesalers and jobbers in the clean and functional facilities.
Role The Central Wholesale Market Law of 1923 has laid the foundation of the wholesale market system in Japan. The Law was revised in 1971 and the present Wholesale Market Law was newly promulgated to cope with the succeeding social changes.
The present system of wholesale market in Japan has two features: (1) Local governments found and manage their central wholesale markets. (2) Prices are fixed on the basis of auction regardless of volume of transaction. This is an unique system around the world; the law restricts transactions in the markets to maintain impartiality.
Before central wholesale markets were established, although auction had been held partially in vegetable markets, most prices had been negotiated in secret between sellers and buyers. It sometimes caused unfair transactions and placed producers and consumers under disadvantages.
The principle of public auction established by the Central Wholesale Market Law had a marked effect on distribution of perishable foods: fair prices and proper transactions are ensured. Thus, thanks to the central wholesale market, producers and consumers have become able to supply or consume perishable foods without anxiety.

MIT Visiting Artist Anicka Yi teamed up with Postdoctoral Fellow Tal Danino to present their current work to engineer a collectively scented bacteria, created from the DNA of 100 women. Participants learned about the art and the science behind the project.
Anicka Yi’s work explores scent and decay, creating a sensorial experience that disrupts our predominantly visual culture.
At MIT, Ancika Yi is working with researchers to create new scents based on bacteria, new materials for creating installations, and is exploring the nature of collaboration between individuals and disciplines. Anicka’s work will be on view at the List Visual Art Center May 22 through July 26, 2015.
Tal Danino is postdoctoral fellow at MIT’s Laboratory for Multiscale Regenerative Technologies, whose research explores the emerging frontier of combining biology and engineering. He is actively involved in developing science-based art and outreach programs that promote interest in science and cancer research to a general audience.

The 26th annual Community Christmas program for the Riverbend community in Illinois collected 19,252 items for those in need during the holiday season. The program, sponsored by United Way's Southwest Illinois Division and The Telegraph, wrapped up on Thursday, December 10, when more than 100 boxes were picked up from local businesses, dropped off at a central location, and then were sorted for distribution to the 17 recipient agencies. Items donated included non-perishable food, clothes, winter weather necessities like gloves, hats and scarves, blankets, towels, baby care items, hygiene items, and new toys. Community Christmas helps more than 6,000 people in need every year.

Leftover Canadian Army rations that my husband brought home after a week-long exercise. I'm not sure which aspect is more disconcerting: that "Meatloaf with Cabernet Sauce" can be made in non-perishable form, or that the Canadian Army has so little confidence in their food quality assurance process that they have to put disclaimers on every package saying they are not sure what's inside.

JAXPORT CEO Paul Anderson joined port team members today to purchase non-perishable items from Winn-Dixie. The items will be donated to the city-wide Sandy relief effort announced by Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown this week. The city, independent agencies and the school system are collecting donations through Monday. Winn-Dixie is donating truckloads of food to the victims of the storm.

Shopping for perishables became a weekly or even biweekly rather that a daily routine thanks to the refrigerator and the freezer.
Occasionally, a family needs that extra carton of milk to get by and this need sets a new urban tragedy in motion: A carton of milk being driven around town to get to its destination!

The Virginia Beach Police Mounted Patrol celebrated the holiday season by hosting a Holiday Open House - Toy & Food Drive on December 10th at the Mounted Patrol Barn. Donations of non perishable food and new unwrapped toys were collected at the event and distributed to local charities to make the season a little brighter for those in need
There were riding demonstrations, K9 demo, kids' activities, a food truck, and more!

MAHAVATAR BABAJI CAVE
Mahāvatār Bābājī (literally; Great Avatar Dear Father) is the name given to an Indian saint and yogi by Lahiri Mahasaya and several of his disciples,[2] who reported meeting him between 1861 and 1935. Some of these meetings were described by Paramahansa Yogananda in his book Autobiography of a Yogi, including a first-hand report of Yogananda's own meeting with the yogi.[3]Another first hand account was given by Yukteswar Giri in his book The Holy Science.[4] According to Sri M's autobiography (Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master) Babaji, was Shiva. In the second last chapter of his book, he mentions Babaji changing his form to that of Shiva. All of these accounts, along with additional reported meetings, are described in various biographies.[5][6][7]According to Yogananda's autobiography, Babaji has resided for at least hundreds of years in the remote Himalayan regions of India, seen in person by only a small number of disciples and others.[3][8] The death less Master is more than 2000 years old. He belongs to a very powerful lineage of Siddha Boganthar and Rishi Agastya as his Gurus. He acquired this deathless, non perishable body through tough yogik kriyas.
Again, according to his autobiography, shortly before Yogananda left for America in 1920, Babaji came to his home in Calcutta, where the young monk sat deeply praying for divine assurance regarding the mission he was about to undertake. Babaji said to him: "Follow the behest of your guru and go to America. Fear not; you shall be protected. You are the one I have chosen to spread the message of Kriya Yoga in the West
There are very few accounts of Babaji's childhood. One source of information is the book Babaji and the 18 Siddha Kriya Yoga tradition by Marshal Govindan.[9]According to Govindan, Babaji was named Nagarajan (king of serpents) by his parents. [8] V.T. Neelakantan and S.A.A. Ramaiah founded on 17 October 1952, (they claim – at the request of Babaji) a new organization, "Kriya Babaji Sangah," dedicated to the teaching of Babaji's Kriya Yoga. They claim that in 1953 Mahavatar Babaji told them that he was born on 30 November 203 CE in a small coastal village now known as Parangipettai, Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India.[10] Babaji's Kriya Yoga Order of Acharyas Trust (Kriya Babaji Sangah) and their branch organizations claim his place and date of birth.[10] He was a disciple of Bogar and his birth name is Nagarajan.[9][10]
In Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi, many references are made to Mahavatar Babaji, including from Lahirī and Sri Yukteshwar.[3] In his book The Second Coming of Christ, Yogananda states that Jesus Christ went to India and conferred with Mahavatar Babaji.[8] This would make Babaji at least 2000 years old.[11] According to Govindan's book, Babaji Nagaraj's father was the priest of the village's temple. Babaji revealed only those details which he believed to be formative as well as potentially instructive to his disciples. Govindan mentioned one incident like this: "One time Nagaraj's mother had got one rare jackfruit for a family feast and put it aside. Babaji was only 4 years old at that time. He found the jackfruit when his mother was not around and ate it all. When his mother came to know about it, she flew in blind rage and stuffed a cloth inside Babaji's mouth, nearly suffocating him, but he survived. Later on he thanked God for showing him that she was to be loved without attachment or illusion. His Love for his mother became unconditional and detached."[9]
When Nagaraj was about 5 years old, someone kidnapped him and sold him as a slave in Calcutta (now Kolkata). His new owner however was a kind man and he freed Nagaraj shortly thereafter. Nagaraj then joined a small group of wandering sannyāsin due to their radiant faces and love for God. During the next few years, he wandered from place to place, studying holy scriptures like the Vedas, Upanishad, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita.
According to Marshall Govindan's book, at the age of eleven, he made a difficult journey on foot and by boat with a group of ascetics to Kataragama, Sri Lanka. Nagaraj met Siddha Bhogarnathar and became his disciple. Nagaraj performed intensive yogic sadhana for a long time with him. Bhogarnathar inspired Nagaraj to seek his initiation into Kriya Kundalini Pranayam from Siddha Agastya. Babaji became a disciple of Siddha Agastya. Nagaraj was initiated into the secrets of Kriya Kundalini Pranayama or "Vasi Yogam". Babaji made a long pilgrimage to Badrinath and spent eighteen months practising yogic kriyataught to him by Siddha Agastya and Bhogarnathar. Babaji attained self-realization shortly thereafter.[9]
It is claimed that these revelations were made by Babaji himself to S.A.A. Ramaiah, a young graduate student in geology at the University of Madras and V.T. Neelakantan, a famous journalist, and close student of Annie Besant, President of the Theosophical Society and mentor of Krishnamurti. Babaji was said to have appeared to each of them independently and then brought them together to work for his Mission in 1942

Senator Heinrich, Ret. 1SG Francis Cordova, and National Guardsmen picked up non-perishable foods from the Taos Mesa Brewery--the facility hosting this year's Eighth Annual Food Drive and Benefit Show--and delivered them to the Taos U.S. Army National Guard Armory, where the baskets will be sorted and prepared for distribution to families. PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Soldiers from the 229th Military Intelligence Battalion, Presidio of Monterey, join with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 549, Monterey Bay, to spread some holiday spirit. On Dec. 21, the group of volunteers assembled 80 gift packages full of non-perishable foods that were distributed among local military families, veterans, and community members.

The following inscription on the pedestal of this statue—"The Pioneer Woman" in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco—was written by president Benjamin Ide Wheeler, of the University of California:
"Over rude paths beset with hunger and risk
she pressed onward toward the vision of a better country.
To an assemblage of men busied with the perishable rewards of the day
she brought the three-fold leaven of enduring society—
Faith, Gentleness, and the Nurture of Children."
SEIU 721 members who work for the City of Riverside and County, gathered unwrapped toys and non-perishable food for this year's Holiday Toy and Food Drive. The inland members along with various executive board members, RPOA and IBEW 47, came together on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Bryant Park in Riverside, to celebrate and donate the goods to Olive Crest, a non-profit foster service organization.
