Tonight, Western's Performing Arts Center packed a full house to hear Amy Goodman discuss her new book and the state of independent media. Amy looked exhausted when my friends, Chris and Mark, and I said hello afterwards, and for good reason - tonight's talk was her fourth today. She's nearing the end of a two week tour introducing her latest work, 'Breaking the Sound Barrier.' Afterwards, we spoke with Amy and her producer, Denis Moynihan, and mentioned that we too would be in Copenhagen covering next week's UN climate talks. With actions and protests set to take place at all hours of the day, I suspect we'll come to know Amy's exhaustion, and the fatigue of serious independent journalists everywhere.
Amy's message was familiar to those doing independent reporting. The root causes of endless wars, broken healthcare and economic systems and the suffering of the natural world are outright ignored by the mainstream media, a corporate system run by those who are legally obligated to fill the pockets of shareholders before considering the morality of their actions. It is not in the interest of those in power to shed light on the corrupt conditions that maintain their power. If we want to get serious about democracy, we need to wrest ownership of the mainstream media from corporations and hand it over to journalists and artists - those divested of corporate interest.
UPDATE: Goodman was stopped at the US - Canada border crossing on Wednesday for questions regarding public comments she may have planned to make on Canada's 2010 Olympics.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, or Kennedy Center, located on the Potomac River, adjacent to the Watergate Hotel, opened in 1971 as both the nation's living memorial to President John F. Kennedy and the national center for the performing arts. The center's origins date to 1958, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the National Cultural Center Act, the first time in history that the US government backed and helped finance a structure dedicated to the performing arts. Designed by architect Edward Durrell Stone, it was built by Philadelphia contractor John McShain and is administered by a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution. It receives federal funding each year to pay for maintenance and operation.
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts is 100 feet high, 630 feet long, and 300 feet wide. It features a 630-foot long, 63-foot high grand foyer, with 16 hand-blown Orrefors crystal chandeliers (a gift from Sweden), red carpeting, and Robert Berks' bust of Kennedy. The Hall of States and the Hall of Nations are both 250-foot long, 63-foot high corridors. The Kennedy Center also offers one of the only downtown open air rooftop terraces.
The Center has three main theaters: The Concert Hall, opened in 1971 and renovated in 1997 on the south side, seats 2,442; The Opera House, in the middle, seats 2,300; and The Eisenhower Theater, on the north side, seats 1,100 and is named for President Dwight Eisenhower. Cyril M. Harris designed the Kennedy Center's auditoriums and their acoustics.
The first performance was on September 5, 1971, with 2,200 members of the general public in attendance to see a premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Mass in the Opera House. The Center's official opening took place on September 8, 1971, with a formal gala and premiere performance of the Bernstein Mass. The Concert Hall was inaugurated on September 9, 1971, in a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Doráti. On Friday, September 10, 1971, Alberto Ginastera's opera, Beatrix Cenci premiered at the Kennedy Center's Opera House.

The expansion of residential suburbs in the 1960’s and 1970’s left our central city with stately but underutilized school facilities. Fremont School is one example - a beautiful brick and terracotta building in the Spanish Revival style on a quiet Midtown street. It had a ‘second life’ as an adult education center, which was has since been shuttered.
After much discussion and negotiation, Fremont School now is slated as the new creative home for Sacramento’s Performing Arts community. The high ceilings and large classrooms have the potential to perfectly suit rehearsal and teaching needs for the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Opera and Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra.
There are many technical challenges to adapting an early 20th century non-reinforced masonry building to the needs of 21st century performing arts. We are diving into these challenges with creative energy, confident that this new Studios for the Performing Arts will be a vibrant and creative magnet in the community.

WARGASM was first formed in 1982 under the name OVERKILL. OVERKILL was a four piece band featuring Rich Spillberg on guitar, Barry Spillberg on drums, Peter Schiffer on bass and Bob Mayo on guitar. In 1985, OVERKILL changed their name to MANIAC. Bob switched from guitar to bass and they became a three piece band. In 1985, MANIAC released a demo, called “Rainbows, Kittens, Flowers and Puppies”. This was five song demo. MANIAC played several shows throughout New England. By 1986, they had again changed their name to WARGASM. Under this new name they recorded another demo called, “Satan Stole my Lunch Money”. This demo landed them their first record deal. Then soon followed the album, “Why Play Around” on PROFILE records in 1988. Due to personnel changes within their labels management, the album never got the promotion it deserved. The album with no label support hit Number 4 on the CMJ Charts along with heavyweights like METALLICA, ANTHRAX and OZZY. In 1989, the band went on a mini-tour with New York's CRO-MAGS. The band recorded another demo in 1989, titled “Your Dogs Teeth”. This demo was primarily recorded to shopped to perspective record labels. However it somehow managed to wind up in the underground tape trading network and landed on METAL FORCES Magazines top 10 demo charts. In 1990, the band put out another demo called, “Spirits in Decay”. This eight song demo was passed around at the “FOUNDATIONS FORUM” in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where WARGASM also had a showcase gig. 1990 also saw the band crossing over to Europe on short tour with BIOHAZARD. In 1991, the band put out yet another demo called, “Gasm It”. This demo was publicly released. The band again, went to Europe with their friends in BIOHAZARD in 1991. In 1992, another demo was recorded this one called “Enemy Mine”. Also, in 1992 the band signed to MASSACRE Records and by 1993 released it's second album called, “Ugly”. This album featured songs from the previous four demos and a few new ones. There was a short tour with thrashers, NUCLEAR ASSAULT and also a stop at the “MILWAUKEE METAL FEST”, which was headlined by SLAYER and BIOHAZARD. 1993 saw the band again going overseas. This time on a bill with primarily death metal bands. The bands included AGGRESSOR, ILL DISPOSE, ATHEIST and OBITUARY.
The band released an EP called “Fireball” in 1994 A DEEP PURPLE cover song was put on there as was a edited version of the song, “Dreadnaught Day”. This song was the video edit version (The original being on “Ugly”) for the promotional video they had filmed. The EP was rounded out by songs recorded live on a local Boston college radio show. Following the release of “Fireball”, the band again went overseas to tour with TANKARD. This tour did so well for the band, that their label MASSACRE asked if they'd relocate to Germany! Of course the band did not, as it was not feasible for them. Right after the tour, the band was contract obligated by their label to present them with a new album. The band recorded their third album, “Suicide Notes” which was originally to be called, “What are you Afraid of”? But due to all the past label problems, the band decided to make this their last album and informed their label that they have broken up.
WARGASM were released from their contract with “MASSACRE” Records. “Suicide Notes” was finally released by TRANSMISSION Records based out of Holland, Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 1995, prior to the release of the ‘Suicide Notes” album the band put on two final shows on February 11, 1995 and February 12, 1995 at Boston's legendary Rathskeller Rock Club...................... and like that, they were gone.......................... or were they?
In 2000, TRANSMISSION Records released a MCD called “Jingle Hell... Little Drummer Boy”. Which featured, songs from “Suicide Notes” and some demo songs that were originally released on the Japanese version of “Suicide Notes”
But were not released in Europe or America. In 2004, the band reunited for one more show, a benefit which was recorded for an upcoming cd / dvd release.
They came, they saw and they came again! More to come.
Rose Blumkin Performing Arts Center, 2001 Farnam Street, Omaha, Nebraska. Built in 1926, as the Riviera Theatre, the Paramount, as it was known just three years after opening, was distinctive for its unusual Moorish and Italian Renaissance architecture, a combination seldom seen in the Midwest. Designed by nationally known theater architect John Eberson, its exterior focal point is a large copper domed tower, flanked by two smaller towers of similar detailing. The diamond-patterned brick facades contain oriel windows, elaborate cornices, glazed terra-cotta tile copings, and a series of free-standing columns which support griffens. The courtyard atmospheric interior, labeled Hispano-Italian by Eberson, had a sky-like domed ceiling painted dark blue with small, recessed incandescent twinkling lights simulating stars on a tropical night, with artificial fleecy clouds. The lower lobby had water fountains and aquariums filled with goldfish. The orchestra pit and theater organ could be raised or lowered with hydraulic jacks. Both stage productions and motion pictures were presented. In 1960, the theater’s name was changed to the Astro. The huge corner wrap-around marquee, which had become a problem to maintain, was covered by a vinyl material and a single large name and program sign erected above the corner. The theater closed in the early 1980s, and by the late 1990s faced the wrecking ball. Fortunately, Mrs. Rose Blumkin, a wealthy Omaha business woman, purchased it from Creighton University and completely restored the theater to its original opulence. The theater reopened as the the Rose Blumkin Peforming Arts Center, after its savior. The theater is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

I'm a Ghost in My Own Home by Melati Suryodarmo (Indonesia) using charcoal and stone grinding table. For 12 hours, Melati crushed hundreds of charcoal briquettes on a grinding table at the Singapore Art Museum during the Singapore Art Week.
VISUAL COMPOSER PERFORMANCE
I perform my music with my interactive stage design.
It is best to experience my performance live.
I use Ableton Live with an M-Audio Microphone & Keyboard, and the keys of my MacBook Pro to make my tracks.
For this video, I am using an instrumental, but I am also a recording artist.
I make my music, write the lyrics, record my vocals, mix and master my albums.
I then create all the visuals.
I create every single aspect of my work to give you a spherical 4 dimensional experience of my Art.
To create the interactive animation, I write code in Processing (Open Source Programming Language based on Java).
In this video, my hands are controlling the visuals. For this, I use the Leap Motion sensor.
I use a Processing Library by onformative (a studio for generative design based in Berlin) called LeapMotionForProcessing to animate my visuals using Leap Motion.
The animation follows my hand movements in real-time and on key with accurate precision.
The visual is an animation within an animation with symmetry, which makes it a bit more challenging to control, making it even more fun.
Some of the visuals are generated by the music's decibel levels.
The main drive behind my work is PLAY. Play leads to fun, which leads to joy. Following our joy is the driving force in my life, and I want to share it with others. This is why I create interactive installations where people and children of different races and religions get to play and have loads of fun in a magical environment.
The VISUAL COMPOSER PERFORMANCE is a emotional piece with a dark track I made to expose the pain I feel everyday trying to survive in society. I perceive that the social system is set up by certain people to their benefit, while it is handicapping many others for whom it does not fit. I also see that many are unhappy with their jobs. Physicians and lawyers have high rates of suicide according to reports I have read. This is a time for us to question everything, and create a new social ecosystem that benefits all. Including the animals going instinct. I understand the Survival of The Fittest approach, but it does not have to be this way. I understand that nature is very violent and brutal, such as humans, but I also see a greater reality than this animalistic self-destroying one. It takes heart and courage to do what you love all day and all night all of the time forever. If you are willing to die for what you perceive as your purpose, then you are a Freedom Fighter… or simply, an Artist.

In the kitchen of a large Victorian house, four servants sit solemnly in the evening gloom. Upstairs, a midwife attends to the laying-out of their mistress, who has died suddenly, sitting in front of a mirror, adorned with all her jewellery. Mrs Abernethy, the housekeeper, and Lane, the Mistress’s personal maid, are supposed to have listed and locked away all this jewellery, but when Twilley, the maid of all work, finds a diamond ring on the floor, Cook realises that they have appropriated some of the jewellery for themselves and demands a share. Reluctantly, they agree, but then the bell in the Mistress’s room rings. The servants stare at the line of bells in disbelief and mountain apprehension – the midwife has gone, her duty done, and all the servants are in the kitchen – so who calls?

Raas or Dandiya Raas is the traditional folk dance form of Gujarat & Rajasthan India, and is associated with scenes of Holi, and lila of Krishna and Radha at Vrindavan. Along with Garba, it is the featured dance of Navratri evenings in Western India. During Navratri festival, in most of the cities of Gujarat & Rajasthan people gather and perform Garba dance - an event that is becoming increasingly popular in countries with large Gujarati-speaking communities around the world, such as Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

As it stands we are our own enemies in sending wrong messages about our country when in fact we have such a beautiful country. How I wish I could do classes about how to protect the Brand of a country.

his is my fifth year at the TRF; one the first acts I saw during my first visit was the Gypsy Dance Theatre (GDT); I thought they were absolutely amazing - and I still do! Great dancers and musicians. While the rest of just gotten old, the dancers there keep getting better - I guess the dancing keeps them in great shape. What I like about the shows is the energy and interaction between all members of the GDT. If you are anywhere close to them for a show - check it out - they are definitely worth it!
