Title: Optical Illusions and My Nighttime Memories
Theme: Your Night Sky, Astronomy
Materials and techniques: Students used a few different materials and technical skills for this project...Materials included pencil, colored pencils, and construction paper. Students learned how to create Op Art, and express a vision in their mind on paper.
Did you enjoy this project? This project took many twists and turns, when initial concepts didn't pan out, and no one was sure how it was going to turn out. However, with a little problem solving and perseverance, we were all very excited about how they turned out!
About: For this project, students learned about Op Art – or optical art, which is abstract, and often gives the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibration, patterns, or of swelling or warping. Students learned about the innovative Op Art artist Edna Andrade and studied her painting 'Night Sea', that told the story of her memory of nighttime as a little girl. Students then created their own traditional and Op Art composition by drawing and coloring a favorite memory they had that took place at night, and adding a zigzag shaped piece of colored construction paper to their compositions. When four of these individual pieces are placed together in a square, they give the illusion of one cohesive artwork telling a story and also creating an optical illusion of a starburst in the center of the composition.

The 11th Annual Breast Cancer Weekend was held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the Zone Dance Club, 133 W 18th St, Erie PA The event was organized by Michelle Michaels. The beneficiary was again local charity StringsforaCURE®. The event directly raised $2,739, and Sam's Club additionally donated a grant of $2,500, making for a total of $5,239.
As always, there was an impressive array of baskets donated for a Chinese auction. Basket donors included Brenda Crolli, Denise Kubiak, Elaine Lucas Crandall, VisitErie.om, Watson/Hodas families, Lake Erie Counseling, NW PA Pride Alliance, Erie Gay News, Brenda Dugan, Sherry Edkin and family, Little Dance Studio, Matthew Blake & Scott David, Sunglass Hut, Robert Eckendof, Bobbi & Ryan, Drenched Fur, and Pat & Tom Matson.
The weekend included a bake sale. and food. Thanks for the treats goes to Walmart East, Walmart Harborcreek, Matthew Blake, Kathy and David, Gary, Snyder, and Jessica.
Volunteers for the weekend were Josh, Marty, Jimbo, Alex, Season, Brenda, and Zone owners and staff.
The weekend concluded with a drag show, with performers donating all tips. Drag performers were Misty Michaels Kall, Jill Jameson, Danyel Vasquez, Demita Lamore, Trista Towers, Mistress Vanitay, Siren Lady of the Lake, and Michelle Michaels.
Michelle Michaels' mother, Gracie, herself a breast cancer survivor, was the inspiration for the holding the Breast Cancer Awareness weekends each October. StringsforaCURE has had a total of $6,650 raised over the past three years that it has been the designated charity.
In the past five years, StringsforaCURE has given 1,264- $100 gas, grocery and pharmacy gift cards to breast cancer patients in 39 different states, because cancer has no boundaries. They have approved 60 Medical Grants to men and women within 60 miles of Erie, up to $1,500 per grant. This past January, the StringsforaCURE board started a Living Expense Grant program and since January the board has already approved 10 Living Expense Grants to help with rent, mortgage and car payments, etc., up to $1500 per grant.
StringsforaCURE has helped over 1,215 cancer patients, relying solely on donations from the public and corporations, giving over $184,104 directly to these patients.

Cut Piece
Yoko Ono's performance, Cut Piece (1964), first performed by the artist herself in
Kyoto, Japan, in 1964, will be performed this evening by graduate student and assistant
curator of the IMAGINE PEACE exhibition, John Noga. The exhibition Yoko Ono
IMAGINE PEACE, Featuring John & Yoko's Year of Peace, curated by Kevin
Concannon (with John Noga), is on display through September 7th at the Mary Schiller
Myers School of Art's Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall (150 E. Exchange St, Akron)
on the campus of The University of Akron.
While Cut Piece is now widely understood as a feminist performance piece, Ono's early
performances of the work were commonly understood quite differently. Ono performed
the piece a number of times between 1964 and 1966. At the time, she spoke of it as a test
of her commitment as an artist. She frequently told interviewers a story about the
Buddha in which he comes across a hungry lioness and her cubs. taking pity on her
plight, he hurls his body off a cliff above the lioness, scattering the pieces of his body to
offer nourishment to the animals. At the moment of his leap, he achieves enlightenment.
Ono also often discussed the piece as an attempt to move beyond the artist's ego. The
artist, she explained, often gave his audience what he thought they should have. She
wished instead for the audience to take what it wanted from the work. With Cut Piece,
she expressed this quite literally.
The performance score (instructions) calls for the performer to sit on the stage wearing
his or her best suit of clothing with a pair of scissors placed in front of him or her. it is
then announced that members of the audience may approach the stage one at a time to cut
a piece of clothing that they may take with them. The performance ends at the
performer's discretion. Witnessing the performance, it becomes clear that the cutters are
performers as well. The audience observes that each voluntary participation has their own
unique and distinct approach to the work.
in 2003, Ono performed the work personally for the last time. She did it, she says, for
peace, and against ageism, racism, and sexism.

Tu monteras sur une estrade pour haranguer la foule et la presser de te répondre comme dans la Grèce antique et il te sera sera répondu.Ne peut-on rêver meilleure façon d’interroger les oracles ? The Huracán Performante has reworked the concept of super sports cars and taken the notion of performance to levels never seen before. The vehicle has been re-engineered in its entirety, as regards its weight, engine power, chassis and above all by introducing an innovative system of active aerodynamics: ALA. The use of the awarded Forged Composites®, a shapable forged carbon fiber material patented by Automobili Lamborghini, is a real nice touch and it contributes to make the vehicle even lighter in weight. Performance de Chloé Maillet & Louise Hervé - Lindre-Basse, Moselle - 25 Juillet 2008

Les deux artistes nous proposent un parcours dans leur atelier, sur le mode de la visite-conférence d'un chantier de fouilles archéologiques.
Leur performance est réalisée en partenariat avec la bibliothèque de Dieuze, le musée de la Cour d'or de Metz et la Mairie de Mondelange. Elle porte le titre Making of an important project (comment faire un projet important) et se veut le making of de leur prochain film, avant même que celui-ci ne soit tourné. On y retrouvera l'écrivain et académicien Edmond About, Mad Max, les moines de Ménilmontant, Demolition man, dans un va-et-vient permanent entre anticipation, rétro-futurisme et méthodes archéologiques.
Louise Hervé et Chloé Maillet travaillent à quatre mains depuis 2001, au sein de l'I.I.I.I. (International Institute for Important Items). En 2007, elles réalisent leur premier long métrage : Ce que nous savons..., film d'anticipation low tech. "Dans Ce que nous savons..., la science-fiction nous permet d'élaborer l'hypothèse de la disparition des médias (télécommunication, vidéo, photographie). La parole se trouve investie de toutes leurs fonctions. Les dialogues servent à la transmission des informations, qu'elles soient publiques ou privées et la description devient une forme majeure du discours."
Cet intérêt pour les diverses formes de discours et de transmission se traduit dans leurs performances : elles accompagnent ou précèdent le film et relèvent autant de la conférence que du concert ou de la bande-annonce. Elles permettent d'agglomérer diverses sources : musicales, littéraires, cinématographiques, à la fois matériau de travail et prolongement du film. Entre les images présentées et le discours qui les commente, un écart persiste, comme si le spectateur assistait à une "post-synchronisation pas tout à fait réussie".
Dans le cadre de leur résidence, Louise Hervé et Chloé Maillet préparent le tournage de leur deuxième film Un projet important. Elles sont nées en 1981. Elles vivent et travaillent à Paris. Louise Hervé est diplômée de l'école supérieure d'art de Cergy en 2005. Chloé Maillet est doctorante en anthropologie historique à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Leurs performances ont été montrées au Plateau à Paris en 2005, au Palais de Tokyo et à la Vitrine en 2006. Leur premier film Ce que nous savons... a été montré en 2007 dans le cadre du festival Nemo à Paris, ainsi qu'au Cube (Issy-les-Moulineaux), et à la galerie Léo Scheer. Elles seront résidentes au Pavillon du Palais de Tokyo en 2008 / 2009.

The Olympia Theater and Office Building, also known as the Maurice Gusman Cultural Center, at 14 East Flagler Street, was originally built by Paramont Enterprises in 1926 to the design of John Eberson. Eberson, the creator of the "atmospheric theater concept," used an Italian garden setting at the Olympia, closed in on three sides by the walls of a castle and under a simulated night sky.
First opened as a silent movie palace, it was also the first air-conditioned building in the South. It was one of the last theaters in the country to show Vaudeville acts. Throughout its history, cultural icons such as Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Luciano Pavarotti and Etta James have performed at the Olympia.
The mixed use building included an office tower on Flagler Street. Purchased by the Gusman family, the theater was renovated into a performance theater in 1972 by Morris Lapidus and then in 1975 donated by Maurice Gusman to the City of Miami. In the 1990s, the tower was converted by the City of Miami Parking Authority into affordable housing using tax-credit financing.

Limon Dance Company performs "Missa Brevis", choreography by Jose Limon, music by Zolan Kodaly. Costumes by Charles Schoonmaker, staging and direction by Carla Maxwell. Performance was part of an "An Evening of Dance and Music: Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of September 11, 2001", sponsored by The Joyce Theater Foundation on September 10 and 11, 2011 at Nelson A. Rockefeller Park in lower Manhattan. Accompanying Limon Dance was Voices of Ascension, conducted by Dennis Keene.
Jose Limon composed "Missa Brevis" in 1958 after touring Europe. He was particularly struck by wartorn Poland. The cities were in ruins, yet the people's hope and optimism surprised him. Limon wrote "These people are vital and undefeated, they are without rancor, without hatred. They have a heroic serenity. I found this inspiring. I'm going to do a dance about it." Limon offed this work as his "prayer for peace" and as a celebration of the capacity within the human spirit to rise again out of the ashes. (Source: Program Notes)

Our children's ‘In Celebration!’ concert was held in the presence of The Mayor of Gateshead Councillor Malcolm Brain and celebrated some of the best young musical talent in the North East. Winners from this year's Avison Ensemble Young Musicians' Awards were joined by the Gateshead Schools Youth Orchestra (conducted by John Treherne MBE) and the Gateshead Schools Senior Wind Band ‘Notability’ (directed by David Milner). www.g-y-o.org.uk
The concert included the presentation of the 2013 Young Musicians' Awards by The Mayor of Gateshead. The engraved glass awards were created by the North East glass artist Dominic Fonde and are inscribed with music from the Avison workbooks. These are displayed in the winners' schools for a year. The Awards were founded in 2006 and this year's Awards and concert have been supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
