The musical Beauty and the Beast is performed for coalition forces at Forward Operating Base Eggers in Kabul, Afghanistan by members of the Kabul Dance Studio of Kabul. The studio is affiliated with the International School of Kabul, which is funded by a US aid grant. The dance studio consist of about 70 percent afghan students and the remainder are comprised of children of UN workers, contractors and teachers of ISK. The program is open to all.
Erin Jenson started the studio in 2008 as a way to get women in Kabul involved in a country that doesn’t offer much outside the basic needs of life. The initial thought was to teach a couple of classes, but the program quickly blossomed form a handful of students to more than 80 in the first year. The local community has shown great interest despite any language and cultural differences. Some of the students learn by watching the dance moves because they can’t speak English.
The family of five has spent three years in country, “ Some days its like OK this isn’t so bad and other days you think what am I doing here. It’s pretty intense!” said Jenson. “Its just good for people to see there are positive things going on in the country.” She thinks that people see the news with all the violence going on and they think it is all about military force and they don’t see the training and positive steps being taken.

Title: We Landed on the Moon!
Theme: Your Night Sky, Astronomy
Materials and techniques: Students used many materials and skills for this project...Materials included black construction paper, white paper, a stencil of a circle, pencils, scissors, glue, black tempera paint, white tempera paint, blue tempera paint, and saran wrap. Students learned not just how to trace, cut, and paste, but also how to paint/create a moon in an unorthodox style.
Did you enjoy this project? Yes, the students learned a great deal through this project and really enjoyed making their individual moons as well.
About: After learning about the moon and our solar system, kindergarten students looked at different images of the moon as well as other planets in our solar system. As a class, we also took the time to discuss the warm and cool colors. Next, the students traced a stencil of a circle with white paper, cut the circle out, and glued it to the center of a piece of black construction paper. Once the circle was dry and secure, students used black, white, and blue tempera paints to create their very own moon. Saran wrap was placed on top of each circle with the paint underneath. Without getting paint on their hands, each student spread the paint out within the circle. Once the paint was spread out, the saran wrap was removed to reveal their very own moons.

The Flaming Lips formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, but their first brush with fame didn’t come till 11 years later, when the quirky tune “She Don’t Use Jelly” somehow broke into the mainstream a year after the album containing it, Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, was released. Bizarre sonic experiments with equally bizarre song titles made the Flaming Lips hard to fathom, and strange behavior and unfortunate, freakish accidents made them a continual curiosity. All Music Guide's description of the group as “acid bubblegum” is as good a label as any to try to explain the dancing-about-architecture nature of Wayne Coyne and bandmates, currently co-founding bassist/keyboardist Michael Ivins, multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd, who joined in 1993, and drummer/percussionist Kliph Scurlock, a member since 1999.
Showman Coyne handles reedy vocals, guitar, keyboards, assorted other instruments and weird theatrics, like floating in a bubble over crowds, filling the stage with animal- or Teletubbie-costumed characters and various forms of provocative behavior. His bent for weirdness extends to bizarre song and album titles like “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles” and “Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber).” Their bent for brilliance extends to albums like The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and turning a lyric like “Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?” into a song that sounds like a joyous affirmation of life (“Do You Realize?”). With the Flaming Lips, you never can tell what they’ll think of next.

NSAIE AmeriCorps VISTA Members: Darrell Lujan, Sophia Fujikawa, Rudy Rivera, Melanie Mendiola
VISTA members in Guam attended and participated in two major events surrounding the Martin Luther King Holiday. The first was a school visit and the second, was an event bringing all AmeriCorps members together island wide.
NSAIE AmeriCorps VISTA members arranged to visit two local middle schools with children grades 6th-8th – serving many of Guam’s developing communities. One of the schools in particular, Astumbo Middle School, is heavily populated with the children of immigrants from the Philippines and surrounding island countries. While these kids were given the MLK Day off, they were not given a thorough lesson about civil rights.
The four NSAIE AmeriCorps VISTA members, accompanied by four Pa’a AmeriCorps volunteers were assigned to primarily social studies and history classes in pairs at the respective schools. At Astumbo Middle School’s 8th grade social studies classes and at Agueda Johnston Middle School the size of the classes ranged from 30-35 students, over 130 students participated.
In each if the four classes the AmeriCorps VISTA member presented a slide show and video (the “I have a dream” speech), and followed the presentation with discussion and an interactive exercise. The students were given time to reflect and write, “I have a dream” for myself and my family in six months, one year, and beyond.
On Monday, Martin Luther King day, AmeriCorps members island wide assembled at a central meeting point, making their way through Guam’s central business district, all wearing their respective shirts in a sea of civic pride and public service. Afterward, an event was held at the center court of the local shopping center and was open to the public. Many local island dignitaries were present, including: Governor Felix Camacho, Justice Benjamin Cruz, and legislators Judith Gutherz and Rory Respicio, and Mayor Melissa Savares from the village of Dededo.
NSAIE AmeriCorps VISTA member Rudy Rivera participated in the opening ceremony which was a traditional blessing and cultural performance put on by Pa’a Taotao Tano AmeriCorps and other volunteers. Following the opening blessing, there was an awards ceremony for an island wide high school oratorical competition, as well as a musical act. The governor signed a proclamation reaffirming the significance of Dr. King’s legacy to Guam.
In addition to the VISTA members, there were 280 AmeriCorps members present, and 100 volunteers.
The Chateau le Vin fund raiser was a great event held in Wasilla, Alaska in June 2012 as a fund raiser for the performing arts. I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot at this event even though I had no clue what I was doing. I was able to shoot with some of the performers before the show started while they were practicing. During the show I was seated far from the stage and flash wasn't allowed so some of the photos are grainy and slightly blurry. This is one of the events from Alaska I really miss - but I hope these events continue - what a blast!
Note - even though a lot of the performers are belly dancers, the theme for this event was 1890s Paris - and the costumes are so cool.

Les deux artistes nous proposent un parcours dans leur atelier, sur le mode de la visite-conférence d'un chantier de fouilles archéologiques.
Leur performance est réalisée en partenariat avec la bibliothèque de Dieuze, le musée de la Cour d'or de Metz et la Mairie de Mondelange. Elle porte le titre Making of an important project (comment faire un projet important) et se veut le making of de leur prochain film, avant même que celui-ci ne soit tourné. On y retrouvera l'écrivain et académicien Edmond About, Mad Max, les moines de Ménilmontant, Demolition man, dans un va-et-vient permanent entre anticipation, rétro-futurisme et méthodes archéologiques.
Louise Hervé et Chloé Maillet travaillent à quatre mains depuis 2001, au sein de l'I.I.I.I. (International Institute for Important Items). En 2007, elles réalisent leur premier long métrage : Ce que nous savons..., film d'anticipation low tech. "Dans Ce que nous savons..., la science-fiction nous permet d'élaborer l'hypothèse de la disparition des médias (télécommunication, vidéo, photographie). La parole se trouve investie de toutes leurs fonctions. Les dialogues servent à la transmission des informations, qu'elles soient publiques ou privées et la description devient une forme majeure du discours."
Cet intérêt pour les diverses formes de discours et de transmission se traduit dans leurs performances : elles accompagnent ou précèdent le film et relèvent autant de la conférence que du concert ou de la bande-annonce. Elles permettent d'agglomérer diverses sources : musicales, littéraires, cinématographiques, à la fois matériau de travail et prolongement du film. Entre les images présentées et le discours qui les commente, un écart persiste, comme si le spectateur assistait à une "post-synchronisation pas tout à fait réussie".
Dans le cadre de leur résidence, Louise Hervé et Chloé Maillet préparent le tournage de leur deuxième film Un projet important. Elles sont nées en 1981. Elles vivent et travaillent à Paris. Louise Hervé est diplômée de l'école supérieure d'art de Cergy en 2005. Chloé Maillet est doctorante en anthropologie historique à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Leurs performances ont été montrées au Plateau à Paris en 2005, au Palais de Tokyo et à la Vitrine en 2006. Leur premier film Ce que nous savons... a été montré en 2007 dans le cadre du festival Nemo à Paris, ainsi qu'au Cube (Issy-les-Moulineaux), et à la galerie Léo Scheer. Elles seront résidentes au Pavillon du Palais de Tokyo en 2008 / 2009.

Girl Talk is Pittsburgh-based mash-up artist Gregg Gillis. Not too long ago, Gillis made his bread and butter as a biomedical engineer, relegating his mash-up skills to hobby status. But the buzz on both his wildly inventive productions — slicing and dicing and stitching together bits of oldies, chart hits, indie-rock favorites and hip-hop jams — and his wilder live performances eventually propelled him to make Girl Talk a full-time endeavor.
Celebrating 10-plus years of sample-obsessed production and relentless touring, Gregg Gillis released All Day this past November, his fifth album as Girl Talk, and his most epic, densely layered, and meticulously composed musical statement to date. Continuing the saga from the previously acclaimed albums, Night Ripper and Feed The Animals, Gillis lays down a more diverse range of samples to unfold a larger dynamic between slower transitions and extreme cut-ups. With the grand intent of creating the most insane and complex "pop collage" album ever heard, large catalogs of both blatantly appropriated melodies and blasts of unrecognizable fragments were assembled for the ultimate Girl Talk record (clocking in at 71 minutes and 372 samples).

The 11th Annual Breast Cancer Weekend was held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the Zone Dance Club, 133 W 18th St, Erie PA The event was organized by Michelle Michaels. The beneficiary was again local charity StringsforaCURE®. The event directly raised $2,739, and Sam's Club additionally donated a grant of $2,500, making for a total of $5,239.
As always, there was an impressive array of baskets donated for a Chinese auction. Basket donors included Brenda Crolli, Denise Kubiak, Elaine Lucas Crandall, VisitErie.om, Watson/Hodas families, Lake Erie Counseling, NW PA Pride Alliance, Erie Gay News, Brenda Dugan, Sherry Edkin and family, Little Dance Studio, Matthew Blake & Scott David, Sunglass Hut, Robert Eckendof, Bobbi & Ryan, Drenched Fur, and Pat & Tom Matson.
The weekend included a bake sale. and food. Thanks for the treats goes to Walmart East, Walmart Harborcreek, Matthew Blake, Kathy and David, Gary, Snyder, and Jessica.
Volunteers for the weekend were Josh, Marty, Jimbo, Alex, Season, Brenda, and Zone owners and staff.
The weekend concluded with a drag show, with performers donating all tips. Drag performers were Misty Michaels Kall, Jill Jameson, Danyel Vasquez, Demita Lamore, Trista Towers, Mistress Vanitay, Siren Lady of the Lake, and Michelle Michaels.
Michelle Michaels' mother, Gracie, herself a breast cancer survivor, was the inspiration for the holding the Breast Cancer Awareness weekends each October. StringsforaCURE has had a total of $6,650 raised over the past three years that it has been the designated charity.
In the past five years, StringsforaCURE has given 1,264- $100 gas, grocery and pharmacy gift cards to breast cancer patients in 39 different states, because cancer has no boundaries. They have approved 60 Medical Grants to men and women within 60 miles of Erie, up to $1,500 per grant. This past January, the StringsforaCURE board started a Living Expense Grant program and since January the board has already approved 10 Living Expense Grants to help with rent, mortgage and car payments, etc., up to $1500 per grant.
StringsforaCURE has helped over 1,215 cancer patients, relying solely on donations from the public and corporations, giving over $184,104 directly to these patients.

Cut Piece
Yoko Ono's performance, Cut Piece (1964), first performed by the artist herself in
Kyoto, Japan, in 1964, will be performed this evening by graduate student and assistant
curator of the IMAGINE PEACE exhibition, John Noga. The exhibition Yoko Ono
IMAGINE PEACE, Featuring John & Yoko's Year of Peace, curated by Kevin
Concannon (with John Noga), is on display through September 7th at the Mary Schiller
Myers School of Art's Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall (150 E. Exchange St, Akron)
on the campus of The University of Akron.
While Cut Piece is now widely understood as a feminist performance piece, Ono's early
performances of the work were commonly understood quite differently. Ono performed
the piece a number of times between 1964 and 1966. At the time, she spoke of it as a test
of her commitment as an artist. She frequently told interviewers a story about the
Buddha in which he comes across a hungry lioness and her cubs. taking pity on her
plight, he hurls his body off a cliff above the lioness, scattering the pieces of his body to
offer nourishment to the animals. At the moment of his leap, he achieves enlightenment.
Ono also often discussed the piece as an attempt to move beyond the artist's ego. The
artist, she explained, often gave his audience what he thought they should have. She
wished instead for the audience to take what it wanted from the work. With Cut Piece,
she expressed this quite literally.
The performance score (instructions) calls for the performer to sit on the stage wearing
his or her best suit of clothing with a pair of scissors placed in front of him or her. it is
then announced that members of the audience may approach the stage one at a time to cut
a piece of clothing that they may take with them. The performance ends at the
performer's discretion. Witnessing the performance, it becomes clear that the cutters are
performers as well. The audience observes that each voluntary participation has their own
unique and distinct approach to the work.
in 2003, Ono performed the work personally for the last time. She did it, she says, for
peace, and against ageism, racism, and sexism.

The Avison Ensemble performing Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ during the Ensemble’s Family Concert. The Ensemble is directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk.
The Avison Ensemble continued its collaborations with young musicians in the North East region by presenting a Saturday afternoon Family Concert in the heart of Newcastle’s town centre in early October 2011. Performing at the Brunswick Methodist Chapel the Ensemble was joined by the Strings of the Gateshead Youth Orchestra and the Gateshead Viol Consort who performed lively works from the English Baroque period. The Avison Ensemble performed Vivaldi's Four Seasons on period instruments to coincide with the release of their new recording on Linn Records of Vivaldi's 12 Violin Concertos Opus 8.
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

The Gateshead Youth Orchestra performs a very wide repertoire and aims to give young musicians the opportunity to perform a wide range of music from a variety of periods and styles. The Gateshead Viol Consort plays music written between 1550 and 1700.

Astronaut Sellers Performs STS-112 EVA

Launched October 7, 2002 aboard the Space Shuttle Orbiter Atlantis, the STS-112 mission lasted 11 days and performed three sessions of Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA). Its primary mission was to install the Starboard Side Integrated Truss Structure (S1) and Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) Cart to the International Space Station (ISS). The S1 truss provides structural support for the orbiting research facility's radiator panels, which use ammonia to cool the Station's complex power system. The S1 truss, attached to the S0 (S Zero) truss installed by the previous STS-110 mission, flows 637 pounds of anhydrous ammonia through three heat rejection radiators. The truss is 45-feet long, 15-feet wide, 10-feet tall, and weighs approximately 32,000 pounds. The CETA is the first of two human-powered carts that will ride along the International Space Station's railway providing a mobile work platform for future extravehicular activities by astronauts. Prior to Kid Cudi’s imminent launch into super-stardom, the Brooklyn-based rapper was already signed to Kanye West’s label, G.O.O.D. Music, in 2008. It was that year’s single, “Day ‘n’ Nite,” that took Cudi’s rise to fame from a walk to a run, and marked the rapper as one of the year’s most sought-after artists overnight. Having sold more than two million digital downloads with “Day ‘n’ Nite,” Kid Cudi amassed a devoted following, laying the groundwork for his first full-length record release, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, in 2009. A year later, the sequel, Man on the Moon, Vol. 2 re-established Cudi as a game-changer. Bringing a modern twist to the genre, Cudi has remained a musical innovator by experimenting with styles not often heard in rap music. Kid Cudi’s third full-length release, Indicud, was released in April.
