LAS VEGAS, NV, MARCH 25, 2011 - Girl Talk performing at The Boulevard Pool at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Friday night.
Girl Talk is Pittsburgh-based mash-up artist Gregg Gillis. Not too long ago, Gillis made his bread and butter as a biomedical engineer, relegating his mash-up skills to hobby status. But the buzz on both his wildly inventive productions — slicing and dicing and stitching together bits of oldies, chart hits, indie-rock favorites and hip-hop jams — and his wilder live performances eventually propelled him to make Girl Talk a full-time endeavor.
Celebrating 10-plus years of sample-obsessed production and relentless touring, Gregg Gillis released All Day this past November, his fifth album as Girl Talk, and his most epic, densely layered, and meticulously composed musical statement to date. Continuing the saga from the previously acclaimed albums, Night Ripper and Feed The Animals, Gillis lays down a more diverse range of samples to unfold a larger dynamic between slower transitions and extreme cut-ups. With the grand intent of creating the most insane and complex "pop collage" album ever heard, large catalogs of both blatantly appropriated melodies and blasts of unrecognizable fragments were assembled for the ultimate Girl Talk record (clocking in at 71 minutes and 372 samples).

The Flaming Lips formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, but their first brush with fame didn’t come till 11 years later, when the quirky tune “She Don’t Use Jelly” somehow broke into the mainstream a year after the album containing it, Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, was released. Bizarre sonic experiments with equally bizarre song titles made the Flaming Lips hard to fathom, and strange behavior and unfortunate, freakish accidents made them a continual curiosity. All Music Guide's description of the group as “acid bubblegum” is as good a label as any to try to explain the dancing-about-architecture nature of Wayne Coyne and bandmates, currently co-founding bassist/keyboardist Michael Ivins, multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd, who joined in 1993, and drummer/percussionist Kliph Scurlock, a member since 1999.
Showman Coyne handles reedy vocals, guitar, keyboards, assorted other instruments and weird theatrics, like floating in a bubble over crowds, filling the stage with animal- or Teletubbie-costumed characters and various forms of provocative behavior. His bent for weirdness extends to bizarre song and album titles like “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles” and “Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber).” Their bent for brilliance extends to albums like The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and turning a lyric like “Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?” into a song that sounds like a joyous affirmation of life (“Do You Realize?”). With the Flaming Lips, you never can tell what they’ll think of next.

The Chateau le Vin fund raiser was a great event held in Wasilla, Alaska in June 2012 as a fund raiser for the performing arts. I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot at this event even though I had no clue what I was doing. I was able to shoot with some of the performers before the show started while they were practicing. During the show I was seated far from the stage and flash wasn't allowed so some of the photos are grainy and slightly blurry. This is one of the events from Alaska I really miss - but I hope these events continue - what a blast!
Note - even though a lot of the performers are belly dancers, the theme for this event was 1890s Paris - and the costumes are so cool.

VISUAL COMPOSER PERFORMANCE
I perform my music with my interactive stage design.
It is best to experience my performance live.
I use Ableton Live with an M-Audio Microphone & Keyboard, and the keys of my MacBook Pro to make my tracks.
For this video, I am using an instrumental, but I am also a recording artist.
I make my music, write the lyrics, record my vocals, mix and master my albums.
I then create all the visuals.
I create every single aspect of my work to give you a spherical 4 dimensional experience of my Art.
To create the interactive animation, I write code in Processing (Open Source Programming Language based on Java).
In this video, my hands are controlling the visuals. For this, I use the Leap Motion sensor.
I use a Processing Library by onformative (a studio for generative design based in Berlin) called LeapMotionForProcessing to animate my visuals using Leap Motion.
The animation follows my hand movements in real-time and on key with accurate precision.
The visual is an animation within an animation with symmetry, which makes it a bit more challenging to control, making it even more fun.
Some of the visuals are generated by the music's decibel levels.
The main drive behind my work is PLAY. Play leads to fun, which leads to joy. Following our joy is the driving force in my life, and I want to share it with others. This is why I create interactive installations where people and children of different races and religions get to play and have loads of fun in a magical environment.
The VISUAL COMPOSER PERFORMANCE is a emotional piece with a dark track I made to expose the pain I feel everyday trying to survive in society. I perceive that the social system is set up by certain people to their benefit, while it is handicapping many others for whom it does not fit. I also see that many are unhappy with their jobs. Physicians and lawyers have high rates of suicide according to reports I have read. This is a time for us to question everything, and create a new social ecosystem that benefits all. Including the animals going instinct. I understand the Survival of The Fittest approach, but it does not have to be this way. I understand that nature is very violent and brutal, such as humans, but I also see a greater reality than this animalistic self-destroying one. It takes heart and courage to do what you love all day and all night all of the time forever. If you are willing to die for what you perceive as your purpose, then you are a Freedom Fighter… or simply, an Artist.

Cellule domestique d’Anne-Marie Ouellet est un projet qui prend pour objet l’espace résidentiel. Intéressée par le développement des nouveaux espaces résidentiels et les discours de vente promettant un avenir meilleur, miroitement d’une nouvelle manière d’habiter la ville appuyée par des banques d’images génériques donnant l’illusion d’une vie en harmonie avec la nature et la communauté, l’artiste a réfléchit à la standardisation, à la construction du discours et à l’usage de ces espaces en relation à l’environnement extérieur et plus précisément à l’espace public.
À la suite de recherches, d’observations et d’expérimentations, l’artiste a élaboré une œuvre présentée sur une place publique lavalloise située dans le secteur du futur centre-ville, en plein développement immobilier. Faisant écho à l’unité modèle, le projet de création et d’infiltration dans l’espace urbain a pris la forme d’une intervention performative participative. Au moyen de mises en scène de l’usage de l’espace résidentiel calqué sur la visite d’un condo modèle, l’action performative d’Anne-Marie Ouellet amenait l’espace domestique dans l’espace public tout en mettant en relation les rapports de forces qui s’opposent et se complètent.
Faisant des liens avec la métaphore de l’île, empruntant des références au théâtre grec et ayant comme sujet principal l’unité d’habitation, l’artiste nous présentait un projet mêlant conventions, discours promotionnels, rêve et dystopie.
Le public était convié le samedi 22 avril dès 15 h, à un point de rendez-vous situé à l’extérieur de la station Montmorency, à l’angle des rues Lucien-Paiement et Jacques-Tétreault, à Laval. L’intervention débutait sur place avec l’accueil d’Anne-Marie Ouellet présentant les transformations urbaines en cours et à venir dans ce secteur du futur centre-ville. Chacun était ensuite invité à se saisir d’un drapeau avant de marcher en groupe jusqu’au site de l’action participative, situé dans un quartier commercial à proximité.
Arrivé à destination, le public était une fois de plus pris en charge par une hôtesse qui agissait telle une agente immobilière. Circulaire, surélevée et pavée, la place publique avait été choisie par l’artiste pour sa situation particulière, soit celle d’un îlot flottant au milieu de stationnements. Les porteurs de drapeaux étaient invités à les planter au sol, tout autour de l’îlot formant la place public. À la manière d’un cadeau promotionnel, chacun s’est vu remettre un masque et a été invité à monter sur la place. Une famille modèle y était installée. Par la suite, un chœur composé de sept figurants s'est formé et un messager est arrivé. Tout au long de l'intervention performative, les visiteurs se sont fait présenter le projet par l’hôtesse, dans un discours qui oscillait entre la présentation d’un futur site à condo et l’utopie d’une île, promesse d’un avenir meilleur. Le chœur appuyait les propos de l’hôtesse, tout en affirmant à quel point ils étaient eux-mêmes de futurs résidents convaincus. Quant au messager, il venait dépeindre sa perception de l’extérieur, un espace standardisé et contrôlé, axé sur la surconsommation.
Le texte, écrit en collaboration avec Louis-Philippe Côté, était librement inspiré des discours promotionnels des sites de vente de condo et des écrists de Bruce Bégout, J. G. Ballard et Jean Baudrillard.
Avec la participation de Georges Audet, Jean Simon Bilodeau, Éliott Côté, Louis-Philippe Côté, Arnaud Doiron, Thomas Duret, Marc-André Fabi, Julie Fortin, Saskia Heckmann, Emma Jettée, Claudette Lemay, Eva Michel et Charles Roy.
L’artiste remercie le Conseil des arts du Canada de son soutien financier, Verticale, pour la diffusion, Louis-Philippe Côté pour l’assistance technique et l’écriture du texte, Pascale Tremblay pour le soutien à la mise en forme théâtrale, Hermine Ortega pour son œil extérieur et la révision de texte, Josée Arès de Airbulle pour le tissu des drapeaux gracieusement offert, ainsi que tous les participants.
Biographie : Anne-Marie Ouellet est née en 1982 à Rimouski. Elle vit et travaille à Montréal. Titulaire d’une maîtrise en arts visuels et médiatiques de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (2011), Anne-Marie Ouellet a présenté ses travaux au Québec dans le cadre d’expositions individuelles et collectives en collaboration avec le centre d’artistes Optica (Montréal, 2015), la Maison des arts de Laval (2013), la Galerie de l’UQAM (Montréal, 2011), la Manif d’art 4 (Québec, 2008) et le Musée régional de Rimouski (2005) pour ne nommer que celles-ci. Elle a également participé à des événements et des résidences de création au Québec, en France et en Allemagne, notamment à PRAXIS (Ste-Thérèse, 2012), DARE-DARE (Montréal, 2012), au centre Oberwelt e. V. (Stuttgart, Allemagne 2006), ainsi qu’à Strasbourg (FRAC/Alsace,France, 2006) et au B_Tour Festival (Berlin. Allemagne, 2013). Récemment, elle à réalisé un projet de création en collaboration avec le centre d’artistes AXENÉO7 à Gatineau, où elle a présenté une exposition en août 2016, puis collaboré avec l’artiste Maryse Goudreau à un projet autour de l’apiculture.
Démarche artistique
Par ma pratique artistique multidisciplinaire, je tente d’approcher différentes stratégies afin d’interroger la place de l’individu à l’intérieur d’une réalité de plus en plus construite, programmée ou prescrite. Par une approche sociologique ou des actions performatives, je me penche sur des questions relatives aux normes qui régissent les usages et les comportements dans différents types d’espaces. C’est principalement par l’expérimentation et l’élaboration de divers comportements individuels et collectifs que je mets en place des structures organisationnelles ouvertes à la participation. Ces interventions, généralement soutenues par l’utilisation d’uniformes, symbole d’identification, de protection et de standardisation, évoquent l’individualisme collectif et la culture « régimentaire ». C’est en renvoyant au spectateur des images qui lui révèlent ses conditionnements que j’amplifie ces différents paramètres de la société de contrôle.
Par une approche conceptuelle et contextuelle, mon travail questionne la conduite, le déplacement et le modelage de comportements dans le tissu urbain et les espaces traditionnellement non dédiés à l’art.

Way back in June 2012 there was a fund raiser for the performing arts in Wasilla, Alaska. One of the organizers was desperate for a photographer and asked me to shoot the event - I never pass up a chance to shoot with belly dancers so I said yes! This set contains shots from the dress rehearsal on 15 June 2012; some of the performers were in costume, some were not, but it was still a great event. Even though most of the performers are Middle Eastern belly dancers, the theme for this show was cabaret life in Paris around 1900 - so there were a lot of cool new costumes.

Dance-R&B singer-songwriter Maya Simantov (מאיה סימנטוב), also known as Maya, was born and raised in Israel to a Jewish family. Maya's debut dance album First Time received praise as one of Israel's all-time best dance albums and was released internationally by Star69 Records.
In 2005 Maya recorded numerous top ratings on major charts around the world, "Searching" entering the billboard top 25 and "First Time" hitting top 10 on billboard dance/club play.
In 2006 a second album entitled Second Time and the single "Be My Boyfriend" started around the world the "Offermanía" with Maya as one of the main protagonists. For 2007, DJ Offer Nissim released a double album with their best remixes and some his own, in collaboration with Maya; the same happened in 2008 with double album Happy People which includes, among other issues, "I'm In Love", "Wish You Where Here", "Love Me", "Why" and "Happy People".

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, or Kennedy Center, located on the Potomac River, adjacent to the Watergate Hotel, opened in 1971 as both the nation's living memorial to President John F. Kennedy and the national center for the performing arts. The center's origins date to 1958, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the National Cultural Center Act, the first time in history that the US government backed and helped finance a structure dedicated to the performing arts. Designed by architect Edward Durrell Stone, it was built by Philadelphia contractor John McShain and is administered by a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution. It receives federal funding each year to pay for maintenance and operation.
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts is 100 feet high, 630 feet long, and 300 feet wide. It features a 630-foot long, 63-foot high grand foyer, with 16 hand-blown Orrefors crystal chandeliers (a gift from Sweden), red carpeting, and Robert Berks' bust of Kennedy. The Hall of States and the Hall of Nations are both 250-foot long, 63-foot high corridors. The Kennedy Center also offers one of the only downtown open air rooftop terraces.
The Center has three main theaters: The Concert Hall, opened in 1971 and renovated in 1997 on the south side, seats 2,442; The Opera House, in the middle, seats 2,300; and The Eisenhower Theater, on the north side, seats 1,100 and is named for President Dwight Eisenhower. Cyril M. Harris designed the Kennedy Center's auditoriums and their acoustics.
The first performance was on September 5, 1971, with 2,200 members of the general public in attendance to see a premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Mass in the Opera House. The Center's official opening took place on September 8, 1971, with a formal gala and premiere performance of the Bernstein Mass. The Concert Hall was inaugurated on September 9, 1971, in a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Doráti. On Friday, September 10, 1971, Alberto Ginastera's opera, Beatrix Cenci premiered at the Kennedy Center's Opera House.
