In a bucolic English summer scene, a narrow-boat is moored on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal at Milford as a Virgin class 390 Pendolino makes a cameo appearance while speeding north from London along the West Coast Mainline.

Constructed in 1772 and 46 miles long linking the River Severn with the Trent and Mersey Canal, the Staffordshire and Worcester was a commercial success carrying trade from The Potteries to Gloucester and Bristol, as well as between the Black Country and The Potteries.

Business took a downturn though with the development of alternative and shorter routes, and eventually slumped when the railways were built in the 19th century. These days canal-users are mainly leisure boaters seeking a more relaxed way of life away from the rat-race - even if only temporarily.

Ban Khlong Wan (Thaïlande) - Portait pris à quelques kilomètres de Prachuap, sur le nouveau port de pêche. Le pêcheur venait de participer activement à la débarque du poisson de son chalutier et s’octroyait une pause bien méritée. J’ai pris une première photo avant qu’il ne réalise que je le photographiais. En réalité, c’est l’un de ses collègues qui m’a « dénoncé ». Le marin de la photo m’a alors demandé que je lui montre son image. Satisfait du résultat -contrairement à moi-, il a immédiatement pris la pose pour un second cliché à la mode pseudo-selfie. Il semblerait que ce soit le salut des surfeurs.

Ban Khlong Wan (Thailand) - Portait taken a few kilometers from Prachuap, on the new fishing port. The fisherman had just actively participated in the landing of fish from his trawler and was taking a well-deserved break. I took a first photo before he realized I was photographing him. In fact, it was one of his colleagues who "reported" me. The sailor in the photo then asked me to show him his picture. Satisfied with the result, unlike me, he immediately posed for a second pseudo-selfie fashion shot.

Beinahe museal zeigt sich bis heute der Abzweigbahnhof Saint-Denis-près-Martel, wo sich am südwestlichen Rand des Zentralmassivs die Strecke aus Brive-la-Gaillarde in Richtung Aurillac, Capdenac und - nur noch auf einem Teilstück im Tourismusverkehr befahren - Souillac verzweigt. Entsprechend ist er gern besuchtes Fotomotiv, wobei der Fokus häufig auf den noch reichlich vorhandenen Formsignalen liegt.

Doch auch das schmucke Empfangsgebäude selbst, in dem der Agent de circulation - der Fahrdienstleiter - in einem Umfeld völlig frei von grünen Absperrzäunen, blauen Bahnsteiglaternen oder anderen neuzeitlichen Segnungen residiert, lohnt einen Blick. Bemerkenswert etwa die üppig bemessene Zahl an Kaminen, an denen man sich perfekt in den Schlaf zählen kann...;)

Im Dezember 2021 legte die ehemalige Straßburger BB 67510 als Infra 814745 (Bretenoux-Biars - Brive-Estavel) einen ausgedehnten Halt vor dem pastellfarbenen Bau ein, nachdem sie am Morgen einen Zug ins Etablissement Industriel des Voies (EIV) nach Bretenoux gebracht hatte, www.flickr.com/photos/132444999@N07/51802775517/in/album-... . Da es auf der Rückfahrt keine Wagen zu befördern gab, war die Crew mit deutlicher Verfrühung unterwegs und konnte sich bis zur planmäßigen Abfahrtszeit erstmal zur wohlverdienten Kaffeepause in die Stube des Agent de circulation verabschieden.
