Minarai Hinako leads guests down the little path to the waters' edge. As is tradition in the past years and in the real world, we will release floating lanterns in the thoughts of our ancestors.
---- the small town of Fiumedinisi (Sicily) ----
Fiumedinisi (ME), eve of the Feast of Our Lady of the Annunciation, 2013: this is a "penitential procession" understood as "the Travels" (or also commonly called "procession of kneeling"), in which the faithful, almost all women, proceeding on their knees, sometimes even barefoot, along a narrow street, about 800 meters long, almost always dark, lit only in some places, especially illuminated by the dim light from the lit robust candles, also used as support from every penitent; the procession starts inside the church of S. I very nearly trod on this toad. In the dark, it was much too well camouflaged on the surface of the path. So after nearly falling over making sure I didn't put my foot on it, we stood and debated the best thing to do.
Eventually, since the path was busy, we decided moving it a few meters away, towards the undergrowth, but in the direction it was facing was the best option. Did we do the right thing?

My town has been involved for many years with the "rails to trails" program. The old railway roadbed that ran on the Burlington, VT to Boston, MA line has now been converted into a forested path that's nice for riding trailbikes on or a nice ramble. It stretches for miles along the Connecticut River.
Somehow I never noticed this ginkgo-lined path at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It doesn't go anywhere me--behind me in this photo, it dead ends into a stand of hollies.
