One of the very thoughtful birthday gifts I received from Eric. I'm a big fan of Patches. He picked this up for me at Comic-Con. (The colors in my photo are a bit wonky).

This is Patches. He's a Pit/Border Collie mix at the San Jose Animal Shelter. He's a real shy and quiet fellow. He looks a lot like my son's dog, Sophie. I hope Patches gets a new home soon.

itle: 20th century Air America patch (1946-1976)
Description: Company patch for Air America, the secret CIA airline that got its start shortly after WWII in Asia but was disbanded in 1976 after the end of the Vietnam War.
Type: physical object
Format:3.2"h x 2.8" square
Paper
Subject
Laos
Secret War
Asian American History
Personal Significance
There were many pilots fro America who flew in Laos during the war, but international policy mandated that they were civilians, not military combatants in the interest of preserving Lao neutrality. Many of those pilots worked for Air America, or companies like Bird & Sons, and were often connected to the Central Intelligence Agency. My father was flying for Royal Air Lao, and often met pilots and crew members from Air America in Vientiane and other parts of his travels in Laos, so this patch has a particular sentimental value to me, even as so much more of its history remains to be understood.
