This thin-walled hollow cast bronze figure of the child Dionysos-Bacchus was made by the indirect lost-wax method and illustrates various aspects of metal working. Casting faults in antiquity were repaired with rectangular patches which occur here at the left knee and calf.
Dionysos is shown here as a naked child wearing an ivy wreath (with ivy berries) on his head and sandals on his feet. His eyes were once inset into the now-hollow sockets and would have been made of stone, glass, and/or ceramic. The statue's left arm is missing, and its right arm has been broken off. The lips and nipples are inlaid with copper. When new, the bronze would have been a medium golden color, darkening over time.

Victorian Child's Scrapbook from circa 1890 and from the Philadelphia area. Book was made from cloth patches sewed together to form the book. Covers were made from cardboard with cloth sewed over them. Probably made by the child's mother or grandmother. The child (probably a young girl) would select pictures from postcards or advertising cards and paste them into the book.
My favorite cardigan (Knitting Pure & Simple, made with Bartlett yarn) sprung a hole in one of the elbows when I was on my big trip last month.
It was about time. I have worn this sweater 2-3 times a week for the past 8 or 9 years.
Ellen had the great idea of making felt patches. She found a skein of Ultra Alpaca that was a good match. I knit a really big swatch and felted it. Then, I made templates using the shapes on Microsoft Word and cut.
It's funny how the color of the yarn looks drastically different in these three photos. The one with the sweater shows the color most accurately.
Patch almost completely forgot about his picnic with Renae! I had to wake him up and help him choose an outfit. He likes red.

And even better an SP patch was trailing. Oddly enough it looked cleaner than most of the UP engines, but I suspect that's because UP yellow shows dirt more.

So here is just a selection of the badges and patches I have made up over the past month. I really enjoy doing it, just thinking of new ways to incorporate them into other things I'm making.
Lit by a pair of 580EXes: one high and slightly to the right on an umbrella, another way off right gelled warm and powered way down, both triggered by an ST-E2. And, of course, the shutter is dragged way out (4 seconds) to pick up the blinky lights.

As part of the nine patch sew along craze, I was inspired to make a cute simple nine-patch quilt too! Here are pics of nine-patch quilts that I'm trying to emulate. I'm using my stash of gingham prints with white muslin to create a quilt something like these quilts with a plain white block between the nine patches. I love gingham so much and I think it'll turn out really cute! I have lots of ginham in different check sizes and materials so it'll be interesting.
my favorite sweater needed some repair.
i was actually excited when i found a few holes it the elbows.
i love elbow patches
For whatever reason after turning the hull over I discovered a deformity in the bottom about 8 foot back from the bow. A plywood patch was glued down over the problem. The panel was rough shaped on the bottom to fit and later the top was sanded down to fair out the area as seen in the next picture.
