Max Patch, NC is a bald mountain on the North Carolina-Tennessee border that has 360-degree views of the Bald Mountains, Unakas, Great Smokies, Great Balsams, and Black Mountains which surround it. The Appalachian Trail also runs across the mountain.

The scene is midnight, deep in the brambles of the pumpkin patch, crawling with a number of spooky creatures staring back at you.

Oct. 21, 2010: My sister wanted to expose her friend, Marge, to the holiday of Halloween. We found a pumpkin patch out in Cherokee County and went out there tonight.

I like this photo because I didn't use a viewfinder on it. I just placed the camera on the ground and then snapped the button. This is was I got.

You can tell the course by the colour of the overalls.

"The back of the overalls normally reveals the school, major, and starting year of the wearer.

"The more patches, the more experienced the party-goer.

"It is customary to trade sleeves with a friend. Some take an exchange of part of a leg to mean that the wearer has a steady girlfriend or boyfriend.

"Nearly everyone who wears overalls has a supply of patches in a pocket to trade with. The patch of your own school is traded for a new one with a student colleague.

"The patches must absolutely be sewn on, not glued."

The sun heads for the Bakken oil patch horizon last Monday evening (9-22-2014) as three pumpjacks rock in near-unison to draw crude oil from far below. The tanks contain both oil and water that is separated on site. Natural gas is also brought up and, until more pipeline is built to handle all of the wells that have been drilled upon the Bakken leases, frequently flared off. In fact, it is difficult to find a location free of light pollution at night, for flares of various sizes and volumes burn in every direction, some whistling intensely like jet engines. The wind sock is one of the first things anyone looks at when arriving at a well site, for it tells us where to work safely to be free of fumes and H2S gas (the potentially deadly sour or "rotten egg" gas produced by many wells and the reason for the detection monitors we wear with fire retardant clothing). This is another side of the water-hauling well-service business, for the separated "production" or "saltwater" is hauled to disposal depots where it is further separated and/or pumped down disposal wells (frequently former oil wells) to safe geological layers far beneath the surface.

Fun at pumpkin patch at Tanaka Farm

Patch upon Patch

Well, winter can get into this old abandoned barn on the Crane Hollow farm, any which way. Except where it has been profusely patched. I don't know if the farmer missed any materials that he could physically use as a patch? I see patches of aluminum, fiberglass and steel corrugation and the odd latt and splatt here and there. I imagine the rusty corrugated isn't long for it either. Some of the rough-sawn planks were so poor, it is a wonder the boards got nailed up before they started breaking across those knots. Some might have broken as they were picked up from the bunk. I would like to have been a fly on the wall watching the farmer's work as he patched and patched. It confuses me. I'd say my Boy Scout Barn Construction Manual left out any of these techniques. Extraordinary. Boy is this shot is so jumbled, it was tough to pick from the jumble. This is probably one of the better shots of the mess.

The north wall is alive with the golden color of the mosses that have taken up residence on the shady siding. Holes were punched into the walls with impunity and then patched over with scrap boards or corrugated metal. I think the porch light must have been terribly convenient over in this corner. Heh,Heh. It must have been even better twisted so that it cast a deeper shadow under the lean-to.

This side of the barn has a lot of elements of visual interest to consider. But the north light is especially cold. Unfortunately the day is galloping for Eddie and his friend. They have probably burned a load of card space but I have been here before and I used the tripod so I could get the shot and still set the lens opening up to f/22 @ 1/8th/sec @ 52mm on the 24-70mm f/2.8G Nikkor Normal-Zoom. I was nearly starting to shake in the cold shade back here. I thought the misty light was pretty enveloping but not back here. Work quickly and maybe I won't freeze up. I am not lingering to stick my head in those holes! And I am working on this shot during Solstice and trying to decide if I will got back out when it is far below freezing. I guess it would take at least a skiff of snow on the ground.

Patch is adjusting very well. He's very talkative and is a purring machine. He is also a face rubber. Doesn't like being picked up but he's getting used to it. I'm glad I decided to keep him. He's perfect for me!!!
