Since the straight-wing F-84E Thunderjet could not reach the performance of the rival swept-wing North American F-86 Sabre, Republic converted a F-84E with all swept control surfaces and an uprated engine. Further design changes were made when the engine was replaced by a license-built British Armstrong-Siddeley Sapphire turbojet, requiring the fuselage to be redesigned and the speedbrakes moved to the fuselage sides. As a result, the F-84F was significantly delayed, not entering production until 1952. Even then, it suffered from control issues that would not be solved until 1954; the F-84F, renamed Thunderstreak, would not be operational until after the Korean War was over.
While it possessed better maneuverability and range than the straight-wing F-84, the Thunderstreak still had considerable problems operationally--the engine tended to flameout in bad weather, it took seemingly forever to get off the ground, and spin recovery was near impossible. It remained in service because nothing else was available, but the USAF began looking for a replacement almost as soon as the F-84F entered service. This would be another Republic project--the F-105 Thunderchief--but delays to that aircraft kept the Thunderstreak in service much longer than the USAF would have liked. After 1961, F-84Fs were relegated to Air National Guard units, while some entered NATO service. The reconnaissance variant, the RF-84F Thunderflash, was more successful: it was practically a new aircraft, and RF-84Fs would soldier on with the Hellenic Greek Air Force until 1991.
This F-84F is 51-9433, which joined the 12th Strategic Fighter Wing in 1954 at Bergstrom AFB, Texas; the role of the Strategic Fighter Wings was bomber escort for the B-36 and B-47. It would later serve with the 31st SFW at Turner AFB, Georgia until 1957. When the Strategic Fighter Wings were disbanded, 51-9433 was relegated to the 121st Tactical Fighter Group (Ohio AFB) at Lockbourne AFB, Ohio.
During the Second Berlin Crisis in 1961, the 121st was federalized and deployed to France in case war broke out. When the Crisis passed, the 121st returned to Ohio, but left its F-84s, including 51-9433, passing them to the newly formed 366th TFW. These in turn were readied for the tactical nuclear strike role during the Cuban Missile Crisis. When France withdrew from NATO, the 366th was reassigned to the United States, but to reequip with the F-4 Phantom II; 51-9433 returned to the Air National Guard, this time with the 192nd TFG (Virginia ANG) at Richmond. It was retired in 1971 and handed over to the US Navy as a target on the China Lake ranges.
Somehow, 51-9433 beat the odds and wasn't reduced to scrap on the ranges, and in 1991, when the Castle Air Museum was looking for a F-84F for display, they acquired 51-9433. (China Lake has proven to be quite a windfall for the museum.) It was restored in the colors of the 12th SFW, its first unit, showing off the colorful markings of the BC (Before Camouflage) 1950s-era USAF. Those markings have faded a bit by 2021, but 51-9433 is still going strong.

On the 23rd December 2017 the "Torm Signe" (2005, 72, 718DWT) is seen in Falmouth Bay whilst enroute from Avonmouth to Antwerp. It is believed the vessel called in for an inspection by a diver.

A Southern Freight charges past the old Peerless Woolen Mills complex and through the grade crossing at McFarland Ave. in downtown Rossville, GA.
Built in the early 20th century, the million square foot Peerless Mills complex was an active textile manufacturing site until the mid-1960s, employing as many as 3,000 people. The dormant factory complex is now quite run-down and has recently been auctioned for less than the cost of a small house. Although renovations and hazard remediation would certainly cost a fortune, here's hoping that the new owners can somehow find a way to preserve this important piece of the city's manufacturing history....and a great prop for a railroad photo!

This is a photograph from the SSE AIRTRICITY Dublin Marathon which was held in Dublin, Ireland on Bank Holiday Monday 26th October 2015 at 09:00.The Dublin Marathon has been held annually since 1980. The marathon course starts at Fitzwilliam Square in the city center and finishes at Merrion Square. For the past number of years there have been some changes to the configuration of the route at the start and finish due to traffic and transportation infrastructure work around the city center. However the majority of the race proceeds in an anti-clockwise direction around the city passing through the Phoenix Park, Chapelizod, Inchicore, South Circular Road, Walkinstown, Terenure, Clonskeagh, UCD, Stillorgan Dual Carriage Way, Ballsbridge and finishing up Northumberland Road and Mount Street. As always the organisation is first class and this seen just under 13,000 people complete the marathon course.
The weather conditions were not very good for marathon running with runners facing race and windy conditions around much of the course.
Overall the poor weather conditions did not make for very good photographic conditions particularly around the start and finish area where it was a little darker around the tall buildings and streets.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. Here I am, taking a breather on the starboard side of the poop deck..
This was in the days when seafarers had neither heard of, let alone used, sunscreen.
After joining BP's supertanker/VLCC 'British Navigator' on the 24/07/1974 in drydock, at Mitsubishi's giant shipbuilding and ship repair facility at Koyagi, Nagasaki, we sailed for Kharg Island, Iran to load a full cargo of crude oil, which would eventually be discharged at Europort and Immingham.
Vessel details:
Keel laid during November 1970, launched on 07/03/1971, and completed on 30/06/1971, by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Nagasaki, Japan (1674)
108,531 g.t. & 218,587 dwt., as:
'British Navigator' to 1976, &
'Sivand' until, on 15/10/1984, during a laden voyage from Kharg Island, Iran, to an unknown port in southern Europe, the vessel was struck by an aircraft-launched guided missile, and caught fire in a position near Farsi Island, approximately 60 nautical miles south of Kharg Island.
The vessel was heavily damaged.
Later the vessel was sold to Taiwan for demolition and arrived at Kaohsiung on 07/05/1986.

I was busy concentrating on this rusty old seafront shelter in Southsea when two young women walked through the shot with their dog.
One of them did a cheeky pose for the camera without pausing and they both walked off laughing.
A priceless fun moment shared with two complete strangers but which was full of humour.
What I like about this image is how it reflects life.
People suddenly appear in your life, create an impact and memories and then are gone. They can be there for a split second or for many years but they leave behind them a memory (like these 2 young women) that cannot be forgotten.
I would have liked to have shown these 2 young women this image but it was a fleeting moment between passing strangers.
My fond memory is the fun they had being cheeky in front of my camera.
All three of us laughed and the moment was gone but captured on film as a record.
BNSF Dash 9-44CW No. 5432 is doing DP duties today on an eastbound Norfolk Southern manifest freight passing a westbound container train in Richmond, Indiana.
the mouth moves, eyes move and blink, and it shoots a gentle blast of air some where from the front. the accompanying state trooper with it will ask the audience questions and the man behind the curtain will answer through the speaker on the car. it really is "cute"
The crews of Britannia 'Oliver Cromwell' and Witherslack Hall acknowledge each other as they pass on the restored Great Central Railway. Taken during the Friday of the Autumn Gala.
We visited the Illinois Railway Museum on July 22, 2009. And just about the first thing we did was take a trolley ride on the Elgin and Belvidere line.
