A parcel is the collective noun for Oystercatchers, so this is a parcel passing. These striking black and white wading birds are also one of most inappropriately named British birds. Oysters are something they never eat, although they are partial to Cockles, Mussels, Lugworms and Earthworths. The scientific name is equally inappropriate as Haematopus means blood-footed, yet they have pink legs and feet, and ostralegus means oyster-eating.

This skittish group were feeding on mussels at Stag Rocks near Bamburgh in Northumberland. They were much less approachable than the Purple Sandpipers they were loosely associating with.

Dry Polder to Be Changed into a Natural Paradise

Čihadla, the dry polder, during the floods in 2002 filled up to the top with water and so saved the surrounding villages from flooding.

20th July 2007

The River Rokytka currently flows through an inhospitable area. This is, however, beginning to change. By next April there will be stream pools and the river will meander through meadowland. “The main benefit will be that the purpose of holding high waters will be maintained whilst improving living conditions of small animals and birds. On top of that another useful recreational centre for the local population will be created,” said the counsellor Petr Štěpánek.

These Major Changes Amounted to 16 Million Czk

The coming revitalization of the area will be the most extensive natural restoration of watercourses in Prague. The Čihadla polder was built in the nineteen eighties. Its main purpose is to control rainwater from around Rokytka allowing the water to flow so that it goes into the most suitable place.

The project is co-financed from the Europe Union funds JPD 2. Europe contributed the sum of nine million Czk, Prague gave about five million and the remaining three million were covered by the state. Lesy hl.m.Prahy (Prague Forestry Company) is in charge of the project.

“We will be adjusting the bed of the river Rokytka and local streams to make them appear natural. We don’t intend to create the flows, we will wait till they start winding by themselves. However, our generation is not going to live to see that,” stated Jiří Karnecki, who works as a watercourse manager in the municipal department of environmental protection.

The Extension of the Stream Bed

The Svépravický Stream will be diverted to the north, where it meets an adjacent forest. Then it will flow in a ditch alongside a forest path to a dog’s exercising ground, prior to joining the Rokytka. Due to the meanders, the stream will be extended by approximately one kilometre. The junction of Hostavicky Stream with Rokytka will be moved further up the current and a big pool will be created there.

The restored Rokytka’s bed will then meander through the middle of the dry polder where it will cross the original route at three different points. Four big pools will be created. Some parts of the Rokytka’s route will be partially buried underground. Some of the banks will be maintained vertically for the birds, which use them as nesting places. Concrete bank reinforcements will also disappear from the banks because they were preventing trees from growing.

The current extension will also lead to the improvement of the steam’s self cleaning capacity. There will be probably fishes coming from the attached ponds. Nonetheless, it is not going to become a fishing area. Many plants will be planted alongside the stream, such as bushes, trees and different kinds of wetland plants and human presence could hinder vegetation.

Celkově v poldru vzniknou čtyři velké tůně a napřímené koryto Rokytky bude zčásti zasypáno.

Flea Market Sundays Series.

For this to be one of my personal favorite shots in this series and imperfect as it is...well, that has to mean something right?

Children of the vendors are often bored and seek out adventures all their own during the day -- I can attest to as much. What caught my eye here was that you just don't see kids playing like this much anymore, that is, without a phone or video game controller in hand.

I have one other frame with this boy playing with his brother, each on their side of the fence, but really liked the energy here, of the boy climbing because his little brother dared him to.

If anyone ever asks, why I posted this or why I like it? My answer: because it's Old School.

so the move continues, we're finished constructing everything, just need to find spaces for things now. the phone line is arriving on wednesday, and the broadband arrives a week after that. it cannot come quick enough, truth be told. the flat is starting to look like a real flat, albeit it with a few wrapped pictures and boxes scattered about the place.

it's been a nice weekend here, albeit colder today, and it was a very pleasant afternoon, at the zoo and in the park! (photos of pretty animals, flowers and birds to follow in the next few days!)

Watching girls go passing by

It ain't the latest thing

I'm just standing in a doorway

I'm just trying to make some sense

Out of these girls go passing by

The tales they tell of men

I'm not waiting on a lady

I'm just waiting on a friend

A smile relieves a heart that grieves

Remember what I said

I'm not waiting on a lady

I'm just waiting on a friend

I'm just waiting on a friend

Don't need a whore

I don't need no booze

Don't need a virgin priest

But I need someone I can cry to

I need someone to protect

Making love and breaking hearts

It is a game for youth

But I'm not waiting on a lady

I'm just waiting on a friend

Another night out with my son - driving lessons...

Today was the culmination of a long road for my wife, my dear Karen Sue. It was her last day as a paid employee. She's retiring after 15 years as an elementary school teacher, 21 years working with volunteers, both as a gift shop manager and then director in a hospital, and two and a half years working as an activity director for a nursing home.

It was time to take a break.

Here, Karen is with Nicki, her assistant who is taking over as activity director. The card that Karen is holding has been signed by most of the staff and residents. As it says: "We will miss you!" that was the theme of the reception that was held at the home this afternoon. Lots of smiles and a few tears. Everyone sad to see Karen leave but happy for her.

Karen puts her whole self into the work she's doing, whether as a teacher, working with volunteers in a hospital or here as an activity director. Many nights would be spent working on a special project or some paperwork, or a report that just couldn't get done during the day.

We're looking forward to enjoying the next phase of our lives, my Karen Sue and I. Tomorrow is the beginning!

Here's to you, my wonderful bride, my partner, my love. You deserve a break today, and every day to come.
