The Soho to Langley Green trip working (T48)has now left the freight only line and is 'wrong line' at Smethwick West station. That station has just had new waiting shelters installed and fresh paving on the platforms, the booking office is at street level, behind the footbridge is the fine GWR signal box. Today the waiting shelters still stand amid a tangle of shrubs and trees, the booking office, footbridge and signal box long gone, this station closed with the construction of the multi-level Smethwick Galton Bridge station when the Jewellery line opened from Snow Hill

Another load of coal is pushed out of the Sandaoling opencast coal mine, whilst the empties set off back into the pit as the single line clears. This rotation of trains and coal has been running continuously since the late 1950s and continues into 2017 at a lesser rate. This is probably the steamiest place on earth at the moment.
