Looking north along a short section of preserved Denver, South Park & Pacific narrow gauge at Kenosha Pass summit.
The export coal train crosses the Upper Trail Lake at Moose Pass as they mosey south towards Seward with the last export coal train, at least for now anyway.
Arthurs Pass - Driving through Arthurs pass in New Zealand going from coast to coast there was some pretty crazy weather and as I was driving I saw these rainbows in my rear view Mirror and was lucky to get this shot.

The scenery was amazing on the White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad out of Skagway, Alaska. The train made an impressive climb from Skagway at sea level to White Pass Summit at 2865 ft. (873 m).

The breathtaking view from atop the Outeniqua Pass with the mountains in front and the Town of George on the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. The sun was bright and the sky was blue which meant multiple attempts to get the exposure as best I can as the harsh & bright conditions made for very challenging photography
The Outeniqua Pass is a relatively modern pass, connecting the coastal town of George with Oudtshoorn and the Little Karoo. It was first built in 1942 - 1951 to provide an alternative to the narrow and steep Montagu Pass. It has been widened and modernized several times since then and today carries the bulk of the traffic flow between the two towns and the Langkloof. Rockfalls and trucking accidents close the pass from time to time. The higher reaches of the pass are subject to heavy rainfall and dense mountain mists which can reduce visibility to a few metres. Under such conditions, this pass is dangerous especially due to the volume of commercial traffic that it carries.
It contains 40 bends, corners and curves, many of which exceed 90 degrees. The road is well engineered, but it is advisable to stick to the speed limits have which have been carefully calculated to get you safely over the pass. For south-bound traffic there are several excellent view-sites and the third one from the summit is particularly impressive, which is marked as "The 4 passes". From this vantage point all four passes still be seen, one of which dates back almost 200 years.
The pass has an altitude variance of 581m and is long at 13,3 km, producing an average gradient of 1:23 with the steepest sections being at 1:10.
Last weekend brought winter into the Swiss mountains. The train of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn disappears into the galleries and tunnels before it reaches the top of the pass. The Calmot avalanche galleries between Tschamut-Selva and Oberalp Pass which are open in summer, were already sealed with wooden planks. This route is also travelled by the Glacier Express. Switzerland, Nov 7, 2017.
Taken from the Pyg track whilst descending Snowdon, looking towards Llanberis and Llyn Peris with Llyn Padarn behind.
The Llyn Padarn lonely Tree is down there somewhere on that little spit that sticks out into the lake!
Atigun is the highest (and in my opinion most majestic) mountain pass in Alaska. Shortly after taking this photo a large avalanche demolished the road, which was closed for nearly a full day. I was unfortunately on the wrong side of the pass at the time (on the "North Slope" as they say) and was forced to spend the night (at a balmy -27F) photographing auroras from the middle of the road -- which was happily free of traffic, courtesy of the avalanche.
I had a great time on my first drive on the Ophir Pass Road between Silverton and Telluride. Great scenery, with autumn leaves just beginning to turn, and an adventurous 4WD road that was exciting but not really challenging (rocky shelf road on steep cliff). Both sides of the pass were really awesome. This is the east side near US-550 on the ascent.
This drive is #7 in "Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails" by Wells & Peterson, rated moderate.

The Grimsel Pass is a mountain pass in Switzerland, crossing the Bernese Alps at an elevation of 2,164 metres (7,100 ft). The pass connects the Haslital, the upper valley of the river Aare, with the upper valley of the Rhône. In so doing, and as the Aare is a tributary of the Rhine, the pass crosses the continental divide between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
A paved road follows the pass, running 38 kilometres (24 mi) from Gletsch to Meiringen. The road is normally closed between October and May, due to the high snowfall on the pass. As it is the only direct road pass between the cantons of Bern and Valais across the Bernese Alps, attempts are made to keep the road open as long as possible with snow ploughs. A PostBus Switzerland service uses the pass several times a day, connecting Meiringen and Oberwald.
The Grimsel Pass road is part of the Aare Route, which is national cycle route 8 of Switzerland. It has been used on several occasions by the Tour de Suisse.

Kirkstone pass winds it's way up the head of the Patterdale valley and connects with the Rothay valley in Ambleside. Brothers Water and the lake district fells make a fitting backdrop.
This highway is open seasonally. It closes at the first hint of snow because it is extremely steep. The summits elevation is about 9600 feet. Highway 108 runs through the Sierra Nevada mountain range and connects Mono and Tuolumne counties, both located in California.
buckle up it is one hell of a ride!
The weather was not that overwhelming in the lower regions, but on top of the pass there was a blink. On the ride between Nätschen and station Oberalp Pass. The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn runs in a duct, milled in snow. Switzerland, Jan 12, 2018.
A few shots from Monday morning.
I got to Castleton with just enough time to capture the mist drifting about Winnats Pass.
There are two sno parks at Carson Pass, Carson Pass and Meiss Meadow. Either one will take your breath away. Literally; I was taking five steps and then doubling over to catch my breath.
