I got back today to the town where I spent my first 10 years as a teacher,

adult, and bachelor after college for work. I had heard that this motel had

a fire, but I had no idea how bad it was - pretty much a total loss.

I had spent a LOT of time here since this is where a fellow teacher and

part time girlfriend back in the day lived for a year in this town. Strange

to come back and see this...

This is what happens when you go searching for props...

The Sevilla Alcazar is a palace in Sevilla, Spain. The palace is a part time residence of the Royal Family, and it is the oldest Royal Palace used in Europe. Noteworthy as it is it not mererly a singular palace but a series of palaces, the product of successive reforms that took place since the Arab occupation. Thus these grounds bring together a perfect symbiosis, a succession of architectural styles, from Islamic to Neoclassical, incorporating Mudejar elements, Gothic, Renaissance, Plateresque, Purist, Baroque and Rococo; all contributing to the magnificence of this landmark.

The Almohades were the first to build a palace, called Al-Muwarak, on the site. Most of the modern Alcázar was built over Moorish ruins for King Pedro of Castile (also known as Pedro the Cruel) with construction beginning in 1364. Pedro used Moorish workers to build his palace giving it a distinctly Islamic design. The palace is one of the best remaining examples of mudéjar architecture, a style under Christian rule in Spain but using Islamic architectural influence. Subsequent monarchs have added their own additions to the Alcázar. Charles V's addition of gothic elements contrasts with the dominant Islamic style.

According to legend, Sevilla was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya with the Moors. Its high point in its history was following the discovery of America.

Sevilla lies on the banks of the Guadalquivir and is one of the largest historical centres in Europe.

Dave "Polly" was born and raised in Beloit, son of Cyriel & Dorothy Pollentier. He shared his growing up years with one sister, Karen, and attended local schools and graduated from Turner High School.

Dave started bowling at the age of 9, traveling by bus to Bowl Aire Lanes. He bowled in the junior leagues on Saturday. After a year he started working at Bowl Aire Lanes cleaning up after the junior leagues and keeping score for in house tournaments. After 3 years he joined another league on Wednesday night and later joined the Adult-Junior league on Sunday, bowling with the Joe Michalski family. At 15 he started pin chasing and assisted with other duties at Bowl-Aire.

After high school graduation he worked at Admiral TV but continued part time work at Bowl Aire Lanes, which eventually led him to Assistant Manager. In 1977 he accepted the manager position at R & R Lanes and in 1981 he went into a partnership at Back O’ The Yards in Janesville. By this time Dave was raising a family and left bowling management for awhile but continued to do what he enjoyed most, bowling.

Dave missed the day-to-day involvement with the bowling circle so in 1994 he accepted the Manager position at Varsity Lanes in Milton.

In 1999, a new opportunity surfaced and he became partner in the Pro Shop at Bowl Aire Lanes (known as The Inside Track Pro Shop). He continued with that business until AMF sold Bowl Aire Lanes at which point he retired from the business side of bowling.

In the Junior division he bowled his first 200 game in 1967 and first 600 series in 1969. He won league championships every year as a junior bowler and won Junior City team title in 1970. In 1972 he held the City Junior record for high average of 183 and a high series of 697 acquired in the City Tournament in 1972. After qualifying at the local, regional and sectionals finals he won the Junior State Individual Coke Tournament at Casino Lanes in Madison giving him the opportunity to represent the state of Wisconsin in the National finals in Washington DC – all expenses paid including entry fees. He placed 28th but met, lodged and bowled with PBA Hall of Fame members Dave Davis, Don Johnson, Dick Weber and Pete McCordick.

Dave’s bowling skills didn’t stop when he moved into adult bowling. He won the Beloit Daily News in 1985, the Viking Spring Shootout in 1990 and the Christmas Eve Scratch tournament in 1991. His tournament bowling achievements are: Won the Beloit City Scratch Team Championship six times and handicap division twice, won the Beloit City doubles twice and Janesville Scratch title in Team, Doubles, Singles and All-Events in 1994 and 1995, bowled in the Wisconsin State Match Game Doubles with partner Larry Hesker, taking 2nd and 4th. and he bowled on the pro circuit competing in 9 regionals and 5 national events with his best finish being 4th once.

His proudest achievement was being a member of the Mickey Mouse Team that placed 2nd in the 1978 ABC Nationals. It was the last week of the tournament...they lost the championship by 5 pins and it went down to the last frame of the last game.

Dave has bowled in 29 ABC tournaments placing in the top 26 six times. Other individual bowling achievements: he averaged over 200 in at least one league every year since 1972, bowled fourteen 300 games, his first in 1975 in the Daily News finals, six 299’s, four 298’s, and three 297’s games and over 500 series of 700+ with eight over 790. He attained at a high average of 221 and a high series of 806 bowled on August 1, 2005.

Dave started his administrative duties early by serving as league secretary for 2 junior leagues for 5 yrs. He continued to serve his fellow bowlers as secretary of the Men’s Independent league for 8 years, the R&R All-Star Classic league for 12 years, and the Viking 3-Man Classic for 2 years.

As for family, Dave and Wife Julie have 3 sons and a daughter. All of them are avid bowlers; Alicia bowled for UW-Whitewater; Seth has rolled many 600 series and won regional scholarship tournaments; Shawn bowled for UW Oshkosh with many 600 series and local tournament titles, and Chris is a 2 time Wisconsin Junior bowler of the year, leading money winner on the scholarship tour, bowled for UW Lacrosse team 4 years, won the Beloit Daily News Tournament (3rd father and son to do so) and is presently bowling on the regional pro tour. Sounds like bowling is in their blood...I wonder why!

Dave not only enjoyed bowling, he lived bowling as shown by his involvement throughout his life. Dave currently bowls in the Thursday J. S. McGuire league at Bowl Aire Lanes and the Sign-A-Rama league at El RA Bowl in Janesville.

At the Elizabeth Board of Education meeting of October 18 at Donald Stewart Early Childhood Center School No. 51, the Board celebrated and recognized excellent achievements of members of the greater Elizabeth community.

Among those honored at the meeting were the cast and crew of the Jefferson Liberty Players of Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy along with director Erika Hicks and producer Sandra Toll, who were presented by Senator Raymond Lesniak for their successful production run of The Laramie Project; Dwyer Technology Academy Senior Ya-Sha-Rah Brathwaite for being named a 2018 Wendy’s High School Heisman School Winner and News 12 Scholar-Athlete due to her record-breaking performances in track and field as well as her high level of academic achievement; members of Elizabeth Patrolman’s Benevolent Association Local No. 4 and Union County Corrections PBA Local No. 199 for their generous donations of turkeys to Elizabeth Public Schools families throughout the district; Admiral William F. Halsey Jr. Health & Public Safety Academy team members Dalia Elrakaybie (vice principal), Madeline Kelly (school nurse), and Chris Lawand (head security guard) for their selflessness, professionalism, and grace under pressure in helping a student who suffered a significant injury; and Elizabeth Public Schools part-time investigators Daniel Saulnier and Leon Davis for their heroic actions that contributed to saving the life of another Elizabeth Public Schools team member.

In 1972, not only is the ITA reconstituted as the IBA (Independent Broadcasting Association) following a widening of remit (given the responsibility organising commercial radio) - hence the IBA logo in the top left-hand corner - but London Weekend moves into central London, to the South Bank. With that comes this new ident known as the 'river'. This version of the 'river' (which was to say with the station until it lost its franchise in 1992) is from an ident sequence from 1978 when the opening score (composed by Harry Rabinowitz) had lost its echo.

Saturday afternoon leaving the village our attention was drawn by hundreds of bicycles under the trees. Drawing closer we saw a gold mine. The ground was riddled with narrow shafts five or so meters deep, at the bottom of which young men, maybe adolescents were digging out the pay dirt. The dirt was hauled by other young men and carried away to be washed by the women. Hundreds of children skipped around the holes, I was not sure if they were there to gawk and play or work. I made a mental note to work more on this.

Yellow G3 Genuine Zeiss Ikon® 37mm push-on filter that I paid too much for from one of those Left Coast camera shops that sells on e-bay, but had to have (with Zeiss clamshell case).

Edited photo from latest test of my Super Ikonta C 6x9 (530/2) folding camera. A fogged area was burned in.

This is only the second roll that I've put through it. I tested it when first received almost 2 years ago, and thought the amber film number window was fogging the film. I changed the windows to a dark red, and keep them covered with gaffers tape when not winding (which I try to do in shade). I'm slow to convince, but it is now obvious that there are still leaks in the bellows (proven with a flashlight). This was the least damaged of 8 frames, because I was inside a building when I made the shot.

So, do I try to replace the bellows with a Kodak of similar size, or make one from scratch, possibly in a burgandy or dark maroon? I have some fabric in both colors, or maybe dark blue or the standard black?

This is a new series I’m starting to introduce all of my characters on flickr and dolly community. I realize that most people see and comment on my girl’s pictures all the time, but know nothing about my characters they are based on! This is just a fun way to get my storyline out there and get others to participate in the excitement! :)

If I tag you or you want to take part in the activity, feel free to add your own Getting to Know to your photostream. If we get enough people participating, I may start a group so all of our stories can be together in one place! (Feel free to organize your GtK as you want; paragraph form, bullets, etc.)

Here is a bit of background for those of you who aren’t familiar with the information I have put on my LJ to help understand the content of my story:

Gemma is part of a division of the human race called the Abled Ones or Receptors. The difference between humans and Receptors is that each Receptor has one of their five senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste) enhanced to collect vast amounts of information about objects and people surrounding them. For example: Gemma is a Sight Receptor, which means she is able to get a glimpse of a person’s past, struggles, emotions, and life story all through a simply glance in the eyes.

~~~
Getting to Know Gemma…
Gemma Daniels was the first child born to Ash and Rose Daniels, a working-class auto-mechanic and trauma nurse in suburban Ohio. She took after her mother being born a Sight, while her younger sister Rowan was born a Touch like their father. Her first few years of life were full of playtimes, giggles, hugs, and much adoration from her two loving parents. She remembers nothing of this.
When Gemma was just three years old, both of her parents were violently murdered by the Abled One’s ever-unstable government, the Assembly, for running a safe house for Receptor refugees trying to escape the government’s brutality. The executions left Gemma and her infant sister orphaned.
Distraught from blame for his twin brother’s death, the girl’s Uncle Cain volunteered to be their new guardian. Once a strict abider of the law, Cain soon learns of the Assembly’s grievances and furtively takes the place of his brother as the new safe house owner. It is in this secret, underground safe house (or mansion, really) the girls are raised.
Growing up, Gemma is thoughtful and tends to form very tight-knit relationships with one or two people at a time. She is thought to be shy, but truly is isn’t. Since she already knows basically everything there is to know about someone, she finds no reason to ask unnecessary questions to fill silences. While she loves people, she enjoys spending large amounts of time by herself so she is able to read, relax, and reflect. Silence is hard to come by in a large house with a revolving door of nomadic refugees, so Gemma is often found hidden in a quiet niche in the library.
Over the years, Gemma forms close friendships with refuges like her “adopted” brother Shale (she and Rowan consider him a brother since they came to the safe house around the same time and are the same age), best friend Aloe, and boyfriend Bane.
Currently, Gemma is laying low with the rest of the inhabitants of the safe house. She attends a small medical school where she plans to become a nurse and writes reviews on children’s books for part-time cash.
~~~

Gah, this was so hard to write! I swear, I had to chop the information in half because the post was getting waaaaay too long. I think I could write on Gemma for pages!

...stop dancing & cry then start slowly dancing again...

My part time job as a First Responder was to drive an ambulance. Here I am in front of the 'box.

This picture along with the next four are all taken at the MFN end of season Car/Bike Cruise Show.

Miss R makes my #50 an interesting half way marker.

I saw her on her own standing against a car. I walked over and asked if I could take her photo.. Moo card came out and the strangers project explained.

Kitty from Nottingham is a part time model.. but her bread and butter living is being a hairdresser. She models at car shows and also does glamour/bikini/under wear + Fetish!!!

We got talking about car shows and who she was there with. It turns out he boyfriend (Duane) is someone I knew from the Nottingham car cruise scene going back well over ten years. Such a small world.

I asked if she she could tell me anything interesting about herself and was told she could hold 15 CD's on her nipples!!!!!!! (I didn't get a photo to prove it).

So lets leave it there!

Some visitors - Taylor (who now lives with us part-time) and Turpin

I was tagged which means I am suppose to share a list of 16 random facts about me. This task was stupid, then hard , then fun, then sweet, then funny, then all consuming. Now its done ....sigh. I cheated a little by combining a few together because I had way to many. Consider yourself tagged.

1. what I know for sure is .... random acts of kindness.... matter.

2. A man wearing a black ski mask held me up at gun point when I was working part time at a video store. He only got about $50 because the night deposit was in a bag under the counter which I did not tell him about. I was not trying to be a hero I just was not giving him any help.

3. If I am not driving I get car sick.

4. I am easily startled ... jump up and scream ... kind of startled. Its like a funny bone I can't help myself. I am use to it but it freaks people out and I end up apologizing to them for my weirdness. I think of it as a positive thing and I think it will save me by scaring the pants off any would be attackers.

5. I LOVE movies. I call it la la land.... I go by myself at least once a week. One week I went 6 times. (all different movies) Yes .. I have access to great theaters with independent movies and main stream movies.

6. When I was 21 my mother came to me and told me she had cancer and 3 months later she was gone. I am always grateful for the 21 years.

7. I giggle ... A LOT - The kids would teased me in elementary school because my voice was so tiny. baby talk .. baby talk ... it's a wonder you can walk. Because of that I learned to giggle silently ... until one day I found my giggle voice and now my giggle is often what makes other people giggle.

8. I'v had lots of nick names ... flacky lakey, little lakey, wiggle and giggles....super j. My favorite is AJ (aunt jan)

9. I have had 14 teeth removed from my mouth. two were in the roof of my mouth. i like to think i was a vampire in a past life. (thank goodness my parents could afford the dental work)

10. I am secretly terrified of seeing dead people. I believe in ghosts I just choose not to see them.

11. I flipped my car upside down but walked away without a scratch. It was not my fault but I still got a ticket for reckless driving.

12. what makes me giddy with joy is creating.

13. growing up i had a cat named croaker because when he purred he sounded like a frog.

14. I am never bored and I don't understand people who are.

15.the best compliment you can give me is to say I inspired you. .......I would like to be remembered for making people giggle. ....what I find most attractive is originality.... .my biggest fear is a missed opportunity.... I am extremely dyslexic. I hate that about myself.....my favorite color is - bluegreenpurplepinkyelloworangeblackwhitegreyred ... one possession I would not want to live without is a bike.

16. what I'v learned from a dog - Is to take time to stop and close your eyes and smell the breeze. what I'v learned from a cat - Is love sometimes comes on its on terms.

I met Simon at the Noosa Surf Festival Tiki Bar on the Beach.

Simon was really cool with having his photo taken, and being on Flickr. He is working part time as a Barman during the Surf Festival, and was pretty busy at the bar. He also has his own car detailing business as well as being an enthusiastic surfer. A fun character, he is a Noosa local and he was happy to pose for a second photo.

I said he was my number 2 stranger and he said he would rather be number 1. I said that number 1 was a pretty girl and he said "so it's beauty and the beast" :-)

Thank you Simon. It was great to meet you.

The first photo was spontaneous with the Samsung Galaxy S. The second was with the Canon SLR.

It was difficult to choose the main shot. Technically the image from the SLR was much better, but the first photo on the Samsung was more appealing. So appeal won and the second photo is attached.

I think this may well be a feature of these impromptu portraits as it is unlikely that the first shot will be as well prepared as the second, if you have the opportunity for a second.
