The Postcard

A postally unused carte postale that was published by James Dupuis of Angouleme. The card, which has a divided back, was printed by Goutagny of Lyon.

The Château

The Château dates back to the 15th. century, and has a water mill on the River Bandiat for the making of walnut oil. The mill is still in working order, although these days it is operated only to show tourists how it worked in former days.

Claude Monet stayed at the château. The park contains an ancient sequoia tree with a circumference of 8.5 metres at 1.2 metres from the ground.

Javerlhac-et-la-Chapelle-Saint-Robert

Javerlhac-et-la-Chapelle-Saint-Robert is a commune in the Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. Javerlhac is in the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin.

The communes of Javerlhac and La Chapelle-Saint-Robert were united in 1823.

The Bandiat River flows near the settlement of Javerlhac.

The painter Fernand Desmoulin (1853–1914) lived in the village of Javerlhac.

In the last century, a railway line ran between Nontron and Angoulême via Javerlhac. Although the rails have long since been removed and bridges demolished, part of the permanent way beginning approximately 6 kilometres from Javerlhac towards Angoulême has now been converted to a cycle and horse-riding path, and is also used by walkers.

The track has been surfaced with asphalt, but is blocked to motor vehicles, and in some cases bridges have been restored or replaced to keep the path intact.

Some of the station houses along the line still remain and have been converted for various purposes. The old station house in Javerlhac is still standing and in good repair, and is now used as the fire brigade station for the part-time fire service.

Firefighters are summoned by a siren which is situated on the town hall and controlled by the mayor's office. In summer months the siren can be heard almost daily as hay barns and hay ricks catch fire. The siren is tested every Sunday at midday.

The road leading to the old station from Place du 8 Mai 1945, is still called Avenue de la Gare.

La Chapelle-Saint-Robert dates back to the 12th. century, it features a Romanesque building which is classified as an historic monument.

Just opposite the old church there is a dovecote by the River Bandiat which is still used by a number of pigeons.

Located on the banks of the Bandiat is an old royal smelter for blast furnaces, which used to be used in the manufacture of guns for the navy; it has been listed as a Historical Monument.

Close to the Mayor's office and post office there is a monument dedicated to members of the community who died in both World Wars.

Nazi Executions

About 5 kilometres from Javerlhac on the road to Angoulême, there are 3 small memorials to members of the Resistance who were shot by the Nazis in World War II.

The Presence of the English

Javerlhac, like most of the surrounding towns and villages is host to a small population of expatriate British families, mostly retired couples.

This is evident from the advertisements by some estate agents in the area where a lot of their publications and adverts are in English. Also, some banks such as Credit Agricole in nearby Nontron, and a number of notaires have signs in their windows informing customers and clients that "English is spoken here".

Some are perhaps supplied with on-off switches.

I wonder why 'pupil' is now such a despised word? It would surely be less inappropriate here.

Steam engine exhibits, vintage vehicles, heavy shire horses and rural crafts. Working rural displays on a 500-acre site including old time steam funfair. Widely recognised as the leading event of its type in the world with 2,000 exhibits, 800 trade stalls and over 220 full size steam engines. At over 600 acres, the show ground is one of Europe's largest outdoor event locations. Established in 1969, for the first 15 years of its existence the steam fair then known as ~ Stourpaine Steam Fair' ~ was held at Stourpaine Bushes, then in 1985 it temporarily moved to nearby Everley Hill, following a land dispute. In 1988, after 3 years at Everley Hill, where access by large crowds was difficult, it moved to its current permanent home at Tarrant Hinton, north of Blandford Forum, where access is vastly improved.

A speciality of the show is the display of traction engines and steam rollers performing the work for which they were designed. Such displays include heavy haulage, threshing, sawing logs, ploughing and road-making. The main arena of the show is purposely sited on the slope of a hill to allow both steam- and internal combustion-powered machinery to demonstrate their capacity for heavy load hauling. One of the main displays is the ~ Showman's Line up, in the vintage fairground section, which is thought to be the largest collection of showman's engines in the world.

Since 2003, the show has contracted its own radio station, Steam Fair FM, broadcasting 24 hours daily from the Saturday prior to the show, to the Monday following – 10 days in all. The station, which is also streamed on the internet, covers show news and views, weather and other relevant information with plenty of listener dedications and a format of Vintage Hits. During the event, the station is advertised on roads in the surrounding area and provides traffic news for drivers using the A354 Blandford to Salisbury road that passes the show site.

With 1,000 trade stands, 2,000 exhibitors and their families, together with our campers on the public campsites (5,000 caravans and tents) it is estimated that the population living on site amounts to 25,000 people at any one time.

Total number of people expected to see the show is in excess of 200,000.

An army of workers distribute and collect the 2,500 litter bins on site and 180/200 tonnes of rubbish is taken away each year.

Each year there are more than 300 paid staff and volunteers working during the five-day show period.

Each year we have 360,000 promotional brochures printed, 65,000 car window stickers and 50,000 posters. These are printed 10 months before the show and then distributed over the next few months all around the UK and to overseas destinations.

Due to planning regulations, actual site preparations do not begin until only 2 weeks before the event commences and we have just 10 days to clear the site afterwards and put it back to a working farm.

Over 2 miles of water piping is laid and over 3,100,000 litres of water is used during the show each year! 2,100,000 litres are used by the engines alone, along with 1,000,000 litres used for domestic and drinking purposes. 750,000 litres of all the water is brought onto site by tankers with a full time team of 6 workers during the show and for a week before.

Over 10 miles of electric cable are used with over 100 floodlights erected and 200 socket outlets placed. 30 large generators have to be hired each year and just one generator is powerful enough to supply electricity to a small village. Electricity has to be provided to 6 entertainment pavilions, 4 shower blocks and other marquees and to our administration and emergency services centre. they have 3 full time and one part time electricians on site.

Each year over 200 tonnes of coal are used.

Over 560 barrels of beer were drunk at last year’s show.

80 tonnes of wood will be cut in this year’s wood sawing section.

16 acres of corn is cut before the show starts by an old time binder with 10 large ricks erected in readiness for the threshing demonstrations. The reed from the demonstrations is then sold to local thatchers who use it on thatched cottages all over Dorset and the neighbouring counties.

Second World War

Kenna served in the Citizen Military Forces (part-time militia forces) from August 1940 and was allotted service number V55955. In December 1941, the Citizen Military Forces were called up for full-time service for the duration of the war. In June 1942, Kenna volunteered for the AIF and was allotted new service number VX102142. He served in the 23rd/21st Battalion in Victoria and later in the Darwin area. In June 1943, his unit returned to Victoria before being sent to Queensland. At this point, the unit was disbanded and its members allotted as reinforcements to other units. Kenna was assigned to the 2/4th Battalion and embarked for New Guinea in October 1944.

Victoria Cross action

The citation for his VC was gazetted on 6 September 1945, and read:

War Office, 6th September, 1945.

The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the VICTORIA CROSS to:-

No. VX.102142 Private Edward KENNA, 2/4 Australian Infantry Battalion, Australian Military Forces.

In the South West Pacific at Wewak on 15th May, 1945, during the attack on the Wirui Mission features, Private Kenna's company had the task of capturing certain enemy positions. The only position from which observation for supporting fire could be obtained was continuously swept by enemy heavy machine gun fire and it was not possible to bring Artillery or Mortars into action.

Private Kenna's platoon was ordered forward to deal with the enemy machine gun post, so that the company operation could proceed. His section moved as close as possible to the bunker in order to harass any enemy seen, so that the remainder of the platoon could attack from the flank. When the attacking sections came into view of the enemy they were immediately engaged at very close range by heavy automatic fire from a position not previously disclosed. Casualties were suffered and the attackers could not move further forward.

Private Kenna endeavoured to put his Bren gun into a position where he could engage the bunker, but was unable to do so because of the nature of the ground. On his own initiative and without orders Private Kenna immediately stood up in full view of the enemy less than fifty yards away and engaged the bunker, firing his Bren gun from the hip. The enemy machine gun immediately returned Private Kenna's fire and with such accuracy that bullets actually passed between his arms and his body. Undeterred, he remained completely exposed and continued to fire at the enemy until his magazine was exhausted. Still making a target of himself, Private Kenna discarded his Bren gun and called for a rifle. Despite the intense machine gun fire, he seized the rifle and, with amazing coolness, killed the gunner with his first round.

A second automatic opened fire on Private Kenna from a different position and another of the enemy immediately tried to move into position behind the first machine gun, but Private Kenna remained standing and killed him with his next round.

The result of Private Kenna's magnificent bravery in the face of concentrated fire, was that the bunker was captured without further loss, and the company attack proceeded to a successful conclusion, many enemy being killed and numerous automatic weapons captured.

There is no doubt that the success of the company attack would have been seriously endangered and many casualties sustained but for Private Kenna's magnificent courage and complete disregard for his own safety. His action was an outstanding example of the highest degree of bravery.[2]

Three weeks later he was shot in the mouth and spent more than a year in hospital before being discharged from the AIF in December 1946. The following year he married Marjorie Rushberry, a nurse who had cared for him at Heidelberg Military Hospital.

Interviewed about his VC action for the Australians at War Film Archive in 2002, Kenna said:

“ It's just one of those things that you do, I suppose. It's hard to say. I think anyone would have done the same thing in the same position because, well it's no good laying down there and doing nothing. You had to do something and I don't think the Nips would have brought tea or dinner for me so I had to get up and do something and I honestly think that any soldier would have done the same thing. ”

—Caulfield (ed), Voices of War p254

Later life

After his discharge from hospital, Kenna returned to Hamilton, Victoria. The people of the Hamilton district raised sufficient funds to build Kenna and his wife a house. The Kennas had four children. After the war he worked with the local council and played Australian rules football for the local team. He attended many Victoria Cross reunions in London and led the annual ANZAC Day march in Melbourne. In the 1980s Kenna had his portrait painted by Sir William Dargie and in July 2000 he was featured on a postage stamp as part of an issue commemorating Australia's living Victoria Cross winners.

Before his death in 2009, two days after his 90th birthday, Kenna was the last Australian Second World War VC recipient, and one of only two Australian living recipients of the (original) Victoria Cross, the other being Keith Payne who earned his VC during the Vietnam War. Mark Donaldson was the sole recipient of the Victoria Cross for Australia at the time.

Kenna's Victoria Cross was on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra for a period in 2010.[3] His family later decided to sell his medals, including the VC, at an auction held at Dallas Brooks Hall in July 2011.[4] Kenna's medal group was sold for a record high A$1,002,000 to an unknown buyer.[5]

In 2013, a bronze statue of Kenna by sculptor Peter Corlett was unveiled in his hometown of Hamilton, Victoria. [6]

The explosive growth in online trading means that there are a lot of great options for the casual investor or people who want to start a career as a day trader.

One of the reasons the industry has grown so quickly is that investors do not need a massive amount of capital to open a brokerage account.

The Sevilla Alcazar is a palace in Sevilla, Spain. The palace is a part time residence of the Royal Family, and it is the oldest Royal Palace used in Europe. Noteworthy as it is it not mererly a singular palace but a series of palaces, the product of successive reforms that took place since the Arab occupation. Thus these grounds bring together a perfect symbiosis, a succession of architectural styles, from Islamic to Neoclassical, incorporating Mudejar elements, Gothic, Renaissance, Plateresque, Purist, Baroque and Rococo; all contributing to the magnificence of this landmark.

The Almohades were the first to build a palace, called Al-Muwarak, on the site. Most of the modern Alcázar was built over Moorish ruins for King Pedro of Castile (also known as Pedro the Cruel) with construction beginning in 1364. Pedro used Moorish workers to build his palace giving it a distinctly Islamic design. The palace is one of the best remaining examples of mudéjar architecture, a style under Christian rule in Spain but using Islamic architectural influence. Subsequent monarchs have added their own additions to the Alcázar. Charles V's addition of gothic elements contrasts with the dominant Islamic style.

According to legend, Sevilla was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya with the Moors. Its high point in its history was following the discovery of America.

Sevilla lies on the banks of the Guadalquivir and is one of the largest historical centres in Europe.

Women and Work

10:20 am - 11:20 am MDT on Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Changes in the demographics of the workforce and the nature of work itself have created new challenges and opportunities for working women and their families. Many of the fastest growing workforces, like professional caregiving, have long been associated with women and are a reflection of the increased need for supports for an increasingly female workforce. The rise of freelancing, self-employment, and part-time work has created flexibility in the workforce with significant implications for families, safety nets, and economic mobility. This panel explores these new realities with an eye toward solutions that will support opportunity for working women.

Robert Barry Bonnell (b: October 27, 1953), is a former outfielder in MLB. During his 10-year major league career, Bonnell played for the Atlanta Braves of the National League, and for the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners of the American League.

His best year was 1983, when he hit .318 (10 HR, 54 RBI and 10 SB) for the Blue Jays. Known by his peers as a "money hitter" Bonnell hit four grand slams during his career and led his teams in game-winning hits nearly every year he played. With a strong and accurate throwing arm, Bonnell was respected by baserunners in both leagues.

In 1984, when he went to Seattle, he contracted "Valley Fever" during spring training. The flu-like symptoms associated with Valley Fever caused a respiratory infection that developed into pneumonia. Bonnell struggled to play with the affliction, however, it took a year to recover and he served his remaining two years as a part time player.

My valentine bear for 2009 is cupid...who puts on his wings come every 14th of Feb, taking much pleasure and of course lots of fun firing his arrows at passers by. Even better still he has a good excuse to do so...just because it's VALENTINE'S day!! :D

Cupid is looking a little sad in this photo because this year, he has to sit Valentine's day out since he has lost his bow. With the excitement of the coming Valentine's day, he took out his bow and arrows early to play with them. Now he doesn't remember where he has misplaced it and won't be able to pierce lovers hearts with his love arrows.

He'll just have to leave it to fate and hope that we'll pluck enough courage to tell that special someone how much we care about them.

He's still rummaging through his toy box...there still hope yet for Cupid to appear!

April 13, 2014

Despite the bright sunshine, the warming power of the sun could not beat out the icy wind blowing from the north. In spite of the wind, I ventured out to do a photowalk with a group of guys. I was not really into the theme of the walk, but proceeded out anyway. Being that we were in suburbia, it would be unlikely that I would come across many people out and about. However, a lone pedestrian caught my eye with her scarf billowing in the breeze and her sunglasses reflecting the bright blue sky. I hesitated, unsure if I should deviate from the assignment and she passed me by. As fate would have it, I caught up to her a few minutes later when she stopped, apparently waiting for something or someone. Taking the second chance I approached.

This is Alexandra. I introduced myself and asked if she would participate in my project; without hesitation she agreed, but before we talked much more, her boyfriend walked up and we explained what was going on. He was agreeable and was even willing to participate himself. I wanted to get her sunglasses in the shot, as that was one of the things that attracted my attention, but given the design and high reflectivity, it was difficult. After we had finished our photo shoot, we chatted for a few minutes. Alexandra is interested in photography, which was one of the reasons she agreed so quickly. She was taking some general business classes while working part time.
