It was a dark and stormy night in Luang Namtha. The streets were strangely empty, as if the entire town had heeded a warning.
As I was making my way to my hostel an old man approached me, carrying a large package. I could see it was wrapped in tattered brown paper and tied with fraying string
"Excuse me, sir," the old man said in broken English. "You help me, please? I cannot carry this package any farther."
I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I wanted to get involved. But something about the old man's earnest expression and the strange aura around him made me curious.
"O.K." I said, reaching out to take the package.
"Thank you, thank you," the old man said, bowing deeply. "You are kind person. Please, take package to edge of town and open. I give you money."
He pressed a wad of crumpled bills into my hand and hurried off into the night, leaving me alone with the mysterious parcel.
As I walked, I couldn't help but wonder what could be inside. Was it a valuable treasure, a dangerous weapon, or something even more sinister? I found myself growing more and more uneasy with each step. Then a strange rustling movement came from within.
Finally, I reached a field and set the package down on the road side. I took a deep breath and carefully untied the string, my heart pounding in my chest. My hands shaking, I pulled the paper away and revealed what was inside.
A very startled monitor lizard wriggled out and vanished into the darkness.

Many residents commute to other centres in Durham and York Regions and beyond.
After public pressure, Boots, the well known pharmacy chain relented, withdrawing their plastic packaging, replacing it with 100% recycled paper bags!

What a difference two weeks make! This is the same place I took photos of Cranes two weeks ago and it was all green. My wife and I had to pick up a package in town today and we drove by Creamers Field. The entire field was yellow with flowers! After we picked up our package, we decided to pull in and see what kind of flowers they were. Thought they were dandelions but was wrong, it is some kind of wildflower. In the midst of the flowers, there were Sandhill Cranes mulling around. Took a few photos and really liked this one the most.
If anyone visits Fairbanks during the summer months, Creamers field is a definate place to stop.
Newts have evolved to engage in unique mating practices. Males and females are drawn together through a potent release of hormones. The male grabs the female from behind and wrestles her to the bottom of the water, where he deposits a sperm package on a leaf. The female then uptakes the sperm into an opening leading to her sex organ.
In some species, as with this eastern spotted newt, the female has small appendages on either side of the opening to assist her. This is a rare photo of a female swimming alone with these appendages still extended. She has either just mated or is looking to do so.
A small insect swims above her to the left.
An exquisite seed pod of a cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana).
Found 4 of them hiding in the grass and was rather stoked as I'd assumed the birds had eaten them. Even though the pods were skeletonising, the fruit inside was absolutely delicious.
... BIG surprises!!!
Pacotes pequenos ... grandes surpresas!!!

This is just a prototype packaging, but it is basically a trio of bullnose clip magnets clipped onto a slit into one of my self designed barrette cards, then popped into a plastic bag and covered with my card stock and stapled.
More logical packaging for condoms
(On our first day's wandering we passed a grocer's. Everyone knows strange consumer products are one of the best things about travel.)
I’m endlessly fascinated by the Oriental poppies in the nearby public garden. What a perfect little package!

These cats live at the research institute. In the daytime, they walk in the yard or bask in the box, but at night, the janitors let them into the building.
Sevastopol.
The Smile on Saturday group’s theme for today 4/16 is “funny packaging”. These are two that came up when I did a search for packaging pictures I had taken — since they were already on Flickr, they weren’t really eligible but they’re fun!…… yes, these are little bottles of nail polish probably for putting into an Easter basket and are Flickr colors!!
Quantitative easing , Austerity package , Global Shift …. US can print trillions , small countries can't , West lost – China won … we got screwed .

I'm thinking of going to Ireland for Christmas. My sister and her family live there and some friends. I love the people and the counter . It's so sad to see Ireland being screwed in my opinion by bankers . All the common banking practices got put on the side by greed . Willingness of lending stupid amount of money to everyone. Everyone was told that real estate is the best investment . Buy 200k home and sell next year for 300K or even better 400K and sell for 600K … no way you could loose. Bankers made commissions and bonuses . People borrowed way too much , spend way too much ... but they did stimulate economy.
Now is the time to pay the piper . I said long time ago “We traded our souls in the dollar store”
