this is the outside of the outerwall guardhouse. Moat would be to the right. Notice the arrow slits and the walling at the bottom. The rookery was inside this heavily fortified structure.
2006 Quedlinberg Germany, an UNESCO world heritage site. Castle started in about 900 AD, but town has buildings that are all from the middle ages. They're mostly restored and this is where I discovered many joys.
Me and my sidekick, Sarah, at the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the yard of my grandparents' home. At that time, there were still sand spurs, patchy grass and wooden docks. Now, people choose to go the more modern route with concrete and green grass that gets carted in on rolls. I still prefer it the more natural way—like it is here.
