The Leffer hydraulic casing Oscillator has over 8 million ft-lbs of torque and 580 tons of extraction force. This

machine is capable of drilling over 200 ft deep with a 2.5M oscillator casing.

This machine is used in caving soils where the bore hole requires casing to the bottom of the hole.

The model VFO-62 is a self-powered variable frequency oscillator for 6 and 2 meter operation. Front panel crystal control. The VFO-62 is designed to operate with most equipment using crystal oscillators operating in the 8- to 9-mc region or with most equipment using overtone oscillators in the 25- to 27-mc range. The garage where Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett began working from in 1938 in Palo Alto. As the sign for this California historical landmark reads, "This garage is the birthplace of the world's first high-technology region, 'Silicon Valley.' The idea for such a region originated with Dr. Frederick Terman, a Stanford University professor who encouraged his students to start up their own electronics companies in the area instead of joining established firms in the east. The first two students to follow his advice were William R. Hewlett and David Packard, who in 1938 began developing their first product, an audio oscillator, in this garage."

This is a commercial CO2 laser made by Synrad for OEM use. It was rejected by the company that bought it, they couldn't return it, and after it sat around on their shelves for a few years gathering dust, eventually one of the owners gave it to me. The laser is air cooled and driven with about 300 watts of RF energy supplied by two RF oscillator boards mounted into the top between the heat sinks. The RF boards require 28 VDC at 16 amps. This laser puts out a little over 30 watts, therefore, the "wall-plug efficiency" of this laser is around 10%. That's pretty good, for a laser!

Insect Factory, Pilesar, Violet, Tag Cloud, and Timmy Sells His Soul. The result is an

hour-long celebration of reckless improvisation and joyful nightmares.

The beginning of another project.... it dosent look much right now but i will be using this 16 bit dsPIC33FJ128GP802 digital signal processor as part of a audio synthesizer. The first stage is to design a digital oscillator that can be have its frequency controlled by the Z80 computer shown in my previous pictures.

This is an alternating current oscillator made from a 555 Timer Chip enclosed in a hand painted jewelry box. The television was modified into a simple oscilloscope and is showing the signal this oscillator produces, which is a slightly sloped square wave.

Creatures Cluster is an endless combination of living members, composed by miniature robots that live autonomously, receiving their energy from solar cells and generating a variety of soft sounds and tiny movements. The Creatures are developed with two simple analogue oscillator circuits, inspired from the nervous system of organisms. Every module is special and unique and it is impossible to build exact equal. According to the interaction that occurs between them, clusters/systems are developed that organically interact with each other in a reciprocal way. The sculptural and auditory nature of the synthesis – radiation of the chaotic – refers to the functioning of a nervous system, as well as to systems of social cooperation and alliances.

Chaos in a driven double well system - an electronic analogue circuit using a two-integrator-loop and an offset switch, which displays a rich variety of chaotic features. The variable modelling the displacement is plotted on the horizontal axis, and the variable modelling the velocity is plotted on the vertical axis. All multiple well resonant systems can display chaos.

Needless to say the equipment was American. The Bell Telephone Laboratories developed this radar (c. 1948) which was subsequently produced by the Western Electric Company. It had a range of over 150 miles - well beyond Berlin, and our main job was to ensure that no aircraft drifted over the corridor limits. Telemetry is the science of measuring something in one place and reporting the results in another.

 

A simple example of telemetry is the automobile speedometer, which measures the wheels' rotation and presents it in miles per hour on the dashboard.

 

Most telemetry used in missile testing is Radio Frequency (RF) transmitted from a missile to a ground receiver. NASA uses telemetry to keep tabs on the functioning of space equipment. Telemetry has been one of the most important data sources used for testing at WSMR.

 

This telemetry package was discovered in an old missile assembly building in the mid-1980s. Shipping documents indicate that it was shipped to Douglas Aircraft Company at White Sands Proving Ground in 1956 and 1957.

 

These Commutator/ Transmitter sets are believed to have been utilized in the Honest John rocket.

 

Especially noteworthy is the fact that this Commutator was a motor driven, mechanical device and the VCO/Transmitter package used vacuum tubes. Today's packages are completely solid state.

  

How did this circa-1957 telemetry package work?

 

COMMUTATOR

Analog voltages representing a number of functions such as elevon, rudder and seeker head positions pressure, and battery voltages were sequentially sampled and converted to a voltage pulse temperature, train (commutated data) and sent to a VCO

 

VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator)

The voltage pulse train (commutated data) was used to drive a VCO to vary the oscillator's center frequency (called FM or frequency modulation)

 

TRANSMITTER

This FM (frequency modulated) signal from the VCO was then sent to a RF Transmitter (radio frequency amplifier) that transmitted the data through an onboard antenna to a ground station receiver

 

RECEIVER

The ground station received this transmitted data signal and sent it through an FM discriminator that changed the data signal back to a voltage pulse train.

 

DECOMMUTATOR

The decommutator converted the voltage pulse train data back to the original set of analog functions that were then recorded on media such as strip charts or analog tapes.

Negisitor oscillator circuit and it's output wave. It produces a rich-sounding sawtooth wave. A very interesting device...

Only a few old transistors produce the negative resistance effect, this one being a TO18 2N2222A.

These are the two main types of waves studied in introductory physics courses. Trans means across, and a TRANSverse wave involves moving an oscillator across a medium so that it causes a wave moving perpendicular (across) the direction the particles are moving. The distance between peaks on the wave is called the wavelength (lambda) and the time between peaks is called the period (T). The height of the peaks is called amplitude, and like in simple harmonic motion, is related to energy. (t, x) and (d,x) graphs are shown at left, with the wavelength and period labeled on them.

 

The other kind of wave, LONGitudinal, has an oscillator vibrating so that it vibrates aLONG the medium, causing it to bunch up and spread out. If we plot a graph of density of the medium, we see it looks a lot like the position graphs for a transverse wave. Longitudinal waves are important because this is how sound travels.

Astor model FSW transistor radio. Released around August 1961. Made by Radio Corporation Pty. Ltd. in Melbourne Australia. Hard to find in this condition. The leather cases are usually cracked and split. Of course an added bonus is having the original box.

Australian radio station call signs are listed on the dial.

Restoration consisted of repainting the white section of the front panel. The original yellow Ducon electrolytic capacitors were retained and re-stuffed with modern components. Another tuning gang was fitted as the original had a bearing missing.

Over all, it is a great performing radio with good sensitivity and clarity.
