I made this heater, 11 mm diameter, 11 mm long with NiCr wire 0.115 mm +/- 0.005 mm.
Copper wires are 0.45 mm thick. Resistance of the heater is 7 Ohm. It will give 3.5W at 5V or 20.5 W at 12V.
Tried this wire without heat sink at 12V and it burned instantly. I hope that ceramic will take some heat out promptly. Will see...
Edit: No way. At 5V gives almost nothing, no glow. At 12V it just glowed brightly one or two seconds and then dies. I need thicker wire. Huh...
the famous lissajous curves
so, here is the thing:
if you would like to get some handsome lissajous curves you need two harmonc oscillators with different oscillation frequencyes f_1 and f_2. one will be moving along the axis x the other along axis y.
you can play with frequenyes to adjust the pattern. (for more google lissajous curves)
BUT how do you do that?? (if you know better ways tell me, this is just what came to my mind @ the moment)
for this you might use several methods.
mine was an Y pendulum. this is made by tying a string ( approx. 1-2m) horizontaly making sure it is loose (so the middle part is ~10-20cm below the level of the knots if pulled (shaping a V)).
then you need to tie an other piece of string on the middle of the V making it an Y shape. the length of this part and the height of the V determines the freq. thus the shape of the lightpainting.
now you just need to attach a torch and there you go with your fancy pendulum.
for the other "roundish" images I used a simple pendulum. if you start it so it runs on an ellipse it is gonna make those shapes, cause mathematical pendulums are not perfectly harmonic oscillators, but again, google that ;)

The Merdedith Box is a simple electronic instrument created for a forthcoming performance by the Dirty Electronics Ensemble of a specially composed piece by leading contemporary composer Anna Meredith.
It contains a simple oscillator with tuning and wave shaping controls, a light source and a speaker.
Each member of the ensemble has built their own instrument in a box of their choosing. Mine is built into a wooden watch case with a polycarbonate panel with LED matrix mounted in it.
The piece will be performed on the 30th May 2012 along with other works including Optical Pianola by Jim Frize. PACE Studio1, De Montfort Universtiy, Leicester, UK

Four oscillators, three multimode filters, two A/R envelope generators, digital gate sequencer, noise generator, phase shifter, external audio input...but no CV control. Uses mini-banana jacks. Built in 1977.
By the time I arrived in Germany (October 1955), the British troops were no longer an occupying force; but more in a defensive role of Western Europe. In the aftermath of the Berlin Airlift (1949) it became obvious that the Soviet troops were here to stay, and the Cold War was getting colder by the minute! Part of the defence at that time was a series of early-warning radar units strung along the East Germany border between the Danish border in the north and the American zone south of Hanover! Our unit at Lüneburg was one of them.
A design from Brooks Shera this takes the signal from an oven-controlled crystal oscillator and disciplines it via a pulse-per-second input. Normally the PPS is provided by a GPS receiver that is locked-on to the atomic clocks in the satellite constellation. In this case the PPS signal will be provided by the IBM master clock.
The disciplined 10MHz out will then be multiplied-up and used to clock an embedded PC.
Of course this PCB would benefit from some components, and I've started ordering them.

The beeper for the ringer consists of a piezo sounder and a little PCB containing a transistor oscillator.
1. Product Overview :
XT1511 side is a smart LED control circuit and light emitting circuit in one controlled LED source, which has the shape of a 4020 LED chip. Each lighting element is a pixel, and the intensities of the pixels are contained within the intelligent digital interface input. The output is driven by patented PWM technology, which effectively guarantees high consistency of the color of the pixels. The control circuit consists of a signal shaping amplification circuit, a built-in constant current circuit, and a high precision RC oscillator.
The data protocol being used is uni-polar NRZ communication mode. The 24-bit data is transmitted from the controller to DIN of the first element, and if it is accepted it is extracted pixel to pixel. After an internal data latch, the remaining data is passed through the internal amplification circuit and sent out on the DO port to the remaining pixels. The pixel is reset after the end of DIN. Using automatic shaping forwarding technology makes the number of cascaded pixels without signal transmission only limited by signal transmission speed.
The LED has a low driving voltage (which allows for environmental protection and energy saving), high brightness, scattering angle, good consistency, low power, and long life. The control circuit is integrated in the LED above.
2. Main Application Field:
●Full color LED string light, LED full color module, LED super hard and soft lights, LED guardrail tube, LED appearance / scene lighting
● LED point light, LED pixel screen, LED shaped screen, a variety of electronic products, electrical equipment etc..
3. Description:
●Top SMD internal integrated high quality external control line serial cascade constant current IC;
●control circuit and the RGB chip in SMD 4020 components, to form a complete control of pixel, color mixing uniformity and consistency;
●built-in data shaping circuit, a pixel signal is received after wave shaping and output waveform distortion will not guarantee a line;
●The built-in power on reset and reset circuit, the power does not work;
●gray level adjusting circuit (256 level gray scale adjustable);
●red drive special treatment, color balance;
●line data transmission;
●plastic forward strengthening technology, the transmission distance between two points over 10M;
●Using a typical data transmission frequency of 800 K bps, when the refresh rate of 30 frames per sec

Digital logic sound generator using CMOS chips and run off 5 volts. Oscillators, logic gates, melody generators, sequencer, filter, etc.
There's a third mode of local oscillator injection:
plate (anode) injection.
In an article entitled, "Frequency Changers", written by W. T. Cocking for the May 6th, 1931 edition of Wireless World magazine, Cocking cites
the need for minimization of local oscillator (LO) radiation from the
first mixer in a superhet which doesn't include an RF amplifier.
Cocking writes, "...The oscillator is coupled to the anode circuit of
the detector [i.e., mixer], which must be a screen-grid valve [i.e.,
vacuum tube]. If this valve is correctly chosen to have a small
grid-anode interelectrode capacity and it be properly screened,
there is no appreciable feed-back from the anode to the grid of
the detector [mixer]. [See Figure 5.]
The oscillator is isolated from the aerial circuit, therefore,
and as a result the circuit is free from radiation and can be
used with an outdoor aerial with impunity.
At first glance it might appear that coupling the oscillator
to the detector anode circuit would not give good results;
actually, however, it is more direct and logical than
coupling it to the grid circuit, and it is capable of quite as satisfactory operation.
It must be remembered that with anode-bend detection,
rectification takes place in the anode circuit, and
that the action of the valve can be considered as that
of an H.F. amplifier followed by a diode rectifier....
Since the local oscillations are not amplified by
the detector they must be stronger than is necessary
when they are fed into the grid circuit. This brings
no difficulties in its train, as it is only necessary
to apply a somewhat higher H.T. [B+] voltage to the
oscillator and to couple it more closely to the
detector.
This close coupling allows of a simplification of
the circuit by omitting the coupling coil, and
including the tuned-anode coil of the oscillator
directly in the detector anode circuit as in
Fig. 6.
In this manner the waveband switching is very
considerably simplified, while the coil
construction becomes no different from that of
the ordinary reacting detector...."

In the lab we sometimes have an oscillator at one frequency and need to create another oscillator at some fixed multiple of that frequency. For instance, at LLO we have a 24.484150 MHz oscillator and we also need an oscillator at exactly 5/2 times that frequency.
I was wondering how this was done. I looked inside the box and saw a "frequency multipler" (×5) connected to a "frequency divider" (÷2). Huh.
I asked Hartmut how these things work, and as an example he sketched something resembling this figure.
Recursion always seems clever, and even moreso in electronics (where it typically goes by the name "feedback".) Here we have a box that takes in a signal at frequency 2f and produces a signal at half that frequency, 1f.
How does it do that?
Well, pretend that it's already doing it. Then we can take the 1f output and mix (multiply) it by the 2f input. When you multiply two sinusoids, you get a signal containing sinusoids at the sum and the difference of the original frequencies.
So mixing 1f and 2f gives us a signal containing 1f and 3f. Low pass filter and keep the 1f. Done! You have frequency divider.
How this thing is bootstrapped--what it does when you first turn it on--I don't know.
Similar tricks get you other multiples of the original frequency. For instance, here we could insert a tap before the low pass filter and get 3f as an output.
We made an oscillator using a single active component, the 2N6027 programmable unijunction transistor (PUT). Photo by David Henshall.
Mystery BFO-- this view shows the slug-tuned oscillator coil and one (the only one!) Black Beauty capacitor which may need replacement.
Just some more "work" things. This machine looks AND sounds horrible to parents... but it helps keep babies alive. If anyone is wondering, this is a high frequency oscillatory ventilator.
