Unlike most others where I know where dad acquired it this one from: Robert's Auction in Fleischmanns, NY (if I remember correctly).
After searching both volumes of "Lanterns That Lit Our World" by Anthony Hobson; I have not been able to identify the manufacturer or model of this piece. Of course I've looked for embossing or markings, but it is not marked anywhere that I or other collectors have found.
So, with that, it's generic until identification.
The next dilemma is, and assuming it is railroad; what was it used for? I've come to three possible conclusions and my reasons for or against :
Telegraph orders station lamp

a) Fresnel vs convex: The clear lenses are not fresnel, but simple convex magnifying. This denotes a general shorter range illumination path. A telegraph order showing clear would be displayed if the train did not need to stop for orders, and if the train crew missed the display, no big deal.
The reds are convex fresnel for maximum light projection distance, so a train crew can stop for orders in ample time.
b) clear color: green vs white
Green lenses might confuse an engineer to a "clear" signal on a block of track or a favorably aligned switch/turnout when in fact it was not. Either could have catastrophic results if track ahead was occupied or switch was aligned for a siding.
c) the oval tapered post mount: no bolt holes like for securing it to switch mast. All switch marker lamps I have seen have rectangular sockets with a hold for crossbolt to secure it to mast.
The use of a tapered oval post permits directional setting and ease of removal.
d): the font is of low capacity. A few hours burn time at most. The lantern would have required frequent attention like at the change of a shift, and only at night if the station was occupied at night. Unlike a switch lantern that had larger capacity tanks for the font for longer unattended duration.
e) rigid non movable loop handle. It doesn't fold down like switch markers do. Which to me, signifies a stationmaster had a pole with hook was used to place and remove the lantern on top of the daytime telegraph paddles outside the station office. By reviewing the diagram in the following link, it shows the socket and mechanism for the post type (as opposed to socket) mount:

Unlikely, as the font is not large capacity and would have limited burn time
Switch Stand Lantern
Possible but unlikely. The non secured design (no securing cross bolt through the mast) allows easy unauthorized removal.
Vehicular Traffic Signal
Possibly not North American
Whatever this lantern was used for, it is in all likelihood pre-1900's. It just has the real old look to it that post 1900 railroad item no longer had.
After dad bought it, it was hung in my work shed from a heavy hook in a rafter to protect it from handling and breakage. We thought it was safe and it hung there untouched for decades.
When I took it down a few weeks ago for a possible sale, the housing was full of bird seed, blue carpet tufts and mouse terds. It did not smell, so it had not been used as a home in a long time, and the blue carpet tells me the mouse raided our old '74 Chevrolet van which had been used as a gasoline shed. It's been gone a good 15 years at least.
Anyhow, I cleaned it out the lantern and hung it back up. Last night, I took it down again with the intent of hanging it outside my office, so I brought it into the shower with me, lathered it up with cleaner - degreaser and washed it with the shower hose. I then let it dry in front of a fan overnight.
Within the last hour, I just drilled the ceiling, snapped a togglebolt to the threaded J bolt and put her up and took the pics.

From a site of two derelict buildings in the dOKUMENTA city of Kassel that over 40 years ago housed BIER GROSSHANDLUNG NEUENHAGEN, a wholesale German beer distribution company.
A dear flickr contact who runs a construction company in the process of clearing out and renovating this site generously provided me access to photograph on August 16, 2012.
"Last Orders" is what pub owners call out to their customers, a few minutes before closing time.

The fortress of Terezín was constructed between the years 1780 and 1790 by the orders of the Austrian emperor Joseph II in the north-west region of Bohemia. It was designed to be a component of a projected but never fully realized fort system of the monarchy, another piece being the fort of Josefov. Terezín took its name from the mother of the emperor, Maria Theresa of Austria who reigned as empress of Austria in her own right from 1740–1780. By the end of the 18th century, the facility was obsolete as a fort; in the 19th century, the fort was used to accommodate military and political prisoners.
From 1914 till 1918 it housed one of its most famous prisoners: Gavrilo Princip. Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife on June 28, 1914, which led to the outbreak of the First World War. Princip died in cell number 1 from tuberculosis on April 28, 1918.
On June 10, 1940, the Gestapo took control of Terezín and set up the prison in the Small Fortress (kleine Festung), see below. By November 24, 1941, the Main Fortress (große Festung, i.e. the walled town of Theresienstadt) was turned into a ghetto. To outsiders, it was presented by the Nazis as a model Jewish settlement, but in reality it was a concentration camp 'where over 33 000 inmates died as a result of hunger, sickness, or the sadistic treatment meted out by their captors'. Theresienstadt was also used as a transit camp for European Jews en route to Auschwitz. 'Although some survivors claim the population reached 75,000, official records place the highest figure on September 18, 1942, at 58,491 in Kasernes (barracks) designed to accommodate 7000 combat troups.

On the 8th November 2018 the small container ship 'Allegro' (2004, 11,388DWT) passes Terneuzen to the Antwerp anchorage. Hopefully some good weather will allow the crew to finish the painting.
Palais Augarten - "a place of recreation" for Archduke Otto
Hierarchies, pecking orders, family traditions also determined the homes of family members. Yet why was Archduke Otto in the Augarten comfortabler living than the heir to the throne?
The site on which there is the Palais Augarten until today, served the Habsburgs yet at the beginning of the 17th Century as a hunting ground. Joseph II bought the site together with the palace and had thereon expanded this. In the same year, in 1775, he made his nickname of "people's emperor" all honor and made the park accessible to the population. "All people dedicated Erlustigungs (enjoyment) site of their cherisher," the Regent let, as there is still read today, write for the occasion on the front gate of the Augarten.
From 1860 to 1863, the brother of Franz Joseph Karl Ludwig lived in the Augarten Palace. 1867, High Steward Konstantin Prince Hohenlohe moved to the Augarten. Under him, and especially thanks to his wife, the estate has developed into a cultural center frequented by famous people such as Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt and Hans Markart. End of the 19th Century Franz Joseph assigned his nephew Archduke Otto the palace together with his own royal household, royal kitchen and Lipizzaners as to residence. Otto lived so comfortabler than his older brother Franz Ferdinand, who was, after the death of Crown Prince Rudolf in 1889 the heir to the throne, after all. But him was only assigned the Palais Modena in Vienna Herrengasse. Why?
Franz Ferdinand suffered from tuberculosis, so it was a long time uncertain whether he would actually be able to succeed to the throne. Franz Joseph, his potential successor had a distant relationship, only too happy to involve his favorite nephew Otto increasingly in the business of government in order to relieve the sick brother. It was obvious that Francis Joseph had the charming Otto preferred as successor. But Franz Ferdinand recovered from his illness. The old order of succession was thus already restored, when in 1899 the Palais Augarten has been extensively renovated and expanded for Otto. There he devoted himself to his favorite hobbies, to painting and photography, before he died at the age of 41. His son, Archduke Carl Franz Joseph was as Charles I the last Emperor of Austria.
Where once Archduke Otto had lived settled in 1923 the famous Augarten porcelain manufactory. In addition, live, learn and play music since 1948, the Vienna Boys Choir here. A place of amusement, as it Joseph II had wished for himself and to which it also made Otto with his cheerful way of life, the Augarten is today.

Eurozone recession fears grow as business activity declines again
Survey of companies finds orders have fallen for second consecutive month
Eurozone business activity has suffered its biggest contraction for 18 months as a result of higher prices, falling demand and rising inventories of unsold goods, according to a benchmark survey of companies, which has added to fears of an impending recession.
S&P Global’s flash composite purchasing managers’ index on Tuesday fell 0.7 points to 49.2, its lowest level since February 2021 and the second consecutive month below the crucial 50 mark that separates growth from contraction.
Economists polled by Reuters had expected a slightly bigger fall. But the survey underlined the challenges confronting the eurozone economy after German businesses reported their biggest reversal of activity for more than two years, while French businesses suffered their first contraction in 18 months.
Andrew Harker, economics director at S&P Global, said the data “point to an economy in contraction during the third quarter”.
He added: “Cost of living pressures mean that the recovery in the service sector following the lifting of pandemic restrictions has ebbed away, while manufacturing remained mired in contraction in August.”
Tourism and hospitality-related services were boosted this summer by the lifting of most coronavirus restrictions in Europe, but the benefits appear to have been cancelled out for many companies by a rising number of countering factors.
Russia is squeezing natural gas supplies to Europe, causing record eurozone inflation, eroding household spending and hitting business investment while forcing the European Central Bank to raise interest rates and convincing many economists that the eurozone is heading for recession.
“August’s flash PMIs suggest that the eurozone economy is now contracting,” Jack Allen-Reynolds, an economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a note to clients, adding that “the ECB will have to press ahead with monetary tightening even as the economy falls into recession”.
Eurozone government bonds sold off on Tuesday reflecting a belief that the economic downturn will not be enough to deter the ECB from raising its deposit rate from zero to 0.5 per cent at next month’s meeting. Italy’s 10-year bond yield rose to 3.65 per cent, a two-month high.
New orders for eurozone businesses in both services and manufacturing fell for a second consecutive month, according to S&P Global, leaving factories grappling with the biggest increase in inventories of unsold products in the 25-year history of the survey.
“Particularly sharp declines in output were seen across basic materials categories and in the autos sector, but reductions were also recorded in parts of the service sector, including in tourism and recreation and real estate,” it said.
The survey also found evidence that inflationary pressures were easing, as input costs and selling prices both rose at their slowest pace for almost a year. Supply chain constraints also abated as delivery times rose at their slowest pace since October 2020.
The reduction in business activity was mostly concentrated in Germany and France, it found, while output in other eurozone countries continued to increase, “albeit only marginally”.
The PMI reading for Germany fell 0.5 points to 47.6, a slightly smaller decline than expected to its lowest level since June 2020, as a sharp drop in the services index offset an improvement in manufacturing.
“German GDP may not have fallen in the second quarter, but it will all but certainly do so in the third quarter, and we doubt it will be able to avoid a technical recession this year,” Melanie Debono, an economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a note to clients.
The French PMI reading fell more than expected, dropping 1.9 points to 49.8, as activity was hit by a sharp slowdown in the services sector.

Euro falls below dollar parity to hit new 20-year low on recession fears
Annual inflation in the euro area was 8.9 per cent in July 2022, up from 8.6 per cent a month earlier
The euro continued to trade below parity with the US dollar on Tuesday, hitting its lowest level in 20 years overnight after fluctuating yesterday amid growing fears over a recession.
The single currency, which came into physical circulation in 2002, fell to $0.9910 Tuesday morning, but pared some losses and was trading at 0.9987 by 5.51pm UAE time.
“Increasing risks to the supply of natural gas from Russia to Europe are darkening the economic outlook,” said Emirates NBD economists Edward Bell and Daniel Richards.
The euro previously fell to below parity with the greenback in early July and has dropped about 12.8 per cent against the dollar this year as households and businesses are squeezed by record inflation.
In the euro area, annual inflation was 8.9 per cent in July 2022, up from 8.6 per cent in June 2022 and 8.1 per cent in May 2022, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.
“Europe’s recession is a foregone conclusion, especially as the risks of disruptions for energy supplies remain elevated,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst for the Americas at Oanda.
“Maintenance [of] Nord Stream 1 is a big risk for Europe as no one knows when and how much supplies will come back online.”
The key pipeline is expected to be suspended for a few days between August 31 and September 2.
On Tuesday, S&P Global's flash composite Purchasing Managers' Index showed that the downturn in Germany's private sector economy deepened in August.
The gauge for Europe's biggest economy fell to 47.6 in August from July's final reading of 48.1, the fastest fall in business activity since June 2020, reflecting a deepening decline in service sector activity and a continued reduction in manufacturing production volumes.
Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst at Avatrade, said traders are betting that the US Federal Reserve Bank is going to stay on a hawkish monetary policy path, with interest rates in the US expected to continue moving higher, which the European Central Bank is unlikely to match due to the slowing economic activity in the eurozone.
The US central bank raised interest rates by 75 basis points in its past two meetings and is expected to do so again when it meets from September 20 to September 21.
“When we look at the dollar against the euro, the strength of the dollar index becomes even more prominent. This is because euro is the currency that is getting battered by traders as they believe that the eurozone is going to face a lot more difficult time and recession is not avoidable here,” said Mr Aslam.
“This is the reason that we saw the euro/dollar dropping to its fresh lowest of this year and below parity.
“Given the fact the euro/dollar is sitting at a level that we have not seen for over a decade, it seems like that traders do not have the stomach to take the other side of the trade, and that is buying the Euro.
“Most believe that it is a losing trade, and this has left the Euro in a free fall.”
The weakness in the euro stretched also spilled over into other markets, with sterling falling against the greenback to 1.1730 Tuesday morning, before gaining some ground to 1.1835 at 5.51pm UAE time.
The British pound is down about 13 per cent against the dollar since the start of the year.
UK inflation will almost double to 18.6 per cent in January 2023 — its highest rate in half a century — as Europe’s energy crisis leads to British bills becoming prohibitive for many consumers, Citi economists have projected.
Last month, CPI inflation struck a 40-year high of 10.1 per cent, with the Bank of England projecting a further rise to above 13 per cent in October before a decline.
While Britain is not in the eurozone, its privatised energy network leaves it particularly vulnerable to rising gas prices.
Citi forecasts that inflation will jump to 14.8 per cent in October as energy bills surge for UK households.
It said inflation would accelerate after last week's 25 per cent rise in UK gas prices and 7 per cent rise in UK electricity prices.
The crew of a 2-Foot Locomotive receives last minute orders from railroad management as their engine is turned in preparation for a night departure.
The locomotive seen here is Monson Railroad #3, which was visiting from the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum in Portland. Although this scene could have easily have taken place at several of Maine's 2-foot railroads, it would not have been possible at the Monson. That railroad had no headlights and never ran at night. It also had no turning facilities for its locomotives.
