OccupyOakland: Defense Against Hate Crime Prosecutions and Stay Away Orders from OO to UCB Press Conference – April 03, 2012
“The press conference was an overwhelming success. Great statements from Yolanda, Michael Siegel, John Viola, Jesse and Shane. We got the real story out there; city doesn’t care about hate crimes unless there’s political benefit, OPD engages in discriminatory policing, DA is trying to ‘tame’ OO with unconstitutional application of the law.” ~Jaime Omar Yassin

Description: On Friday, April 13, 1945 in preparation of their imminent surrender to U.S. troops; German SS troops, under the orders of a local Nazi official, slaughtered over 1,000 religious, political, and military prisoners of war in an attempt to hide their existence. The prisoners were led into a large masonery shed, in which gasoline soaked straw had been placed on the floor. Using phosphorus grenades the straw was set ablaze. Prisoners who tried to escape the burning barn were shot, the rest died in the fire. The German troops attempted to hide the bodies in a mass grave, but had managed to bury only 700 bodies before the area was taken over by U.S. forces. What the U.S. troops found was horrific. Over 300 bodies were discovered in the barn. One of the U.S. soldiers, Corporal Charles Overstreet was the photographer and radioman for the Headquarters Radio Unit of the 252nd Field Artillery Battalion during World War II and used his camera to record the evil deed. He was also there to hear the tale told by one of the handful of survivors. This man fell down while trying to escape and was covered by the bodies of his fellow prisoners as they were gunned down. He stayed where he was and played dead, even when the Germans returned and asked if anyone needed help. Those survivors that moved or responded were shot. He was still under the pile of corpses when U.S. soldiers arrived. Mr. Overstreet has used these and other photographs he took during the war to educate people about what occurred. The "Traitors Arms" made c1460 on the orders of Lancastrian Queen Margaret of Anjou, which uses coats of arms not to honour , but to denigrate her Yorkist enemy , and is a reminder of the violent conflict between the Houses of Lancaster and York during the Wars of the Roses (and also Margaret's vindictive nature).
This was after the Parliament of Devils in December 1459 had declared Richard Duke of York and his followers to be traitors. Henry VI's queen, Margaret of Anjou, insisted that Parliament pass an 'attainder' against Richard and his Neville in-laws. Richard's wife Cecily Neville was forced to attend Parliament to witness her family's disgrace.
It was discovered in the ruins of Ashperton Manor, possibly hidden there by Lancastrian diehards after the Yorkist victory at Mortimers Cross in 1461
It was probably not unique at the time, and this design may have been repeated in carvings and paintings to be displayed throughout the Lancastrian territories. Ashperton had been Lancastrian for generations, but it bordered Yorkist territory to the north and west. . The village was also situated on a major trade route between England and Wales and since the arms were carved for propaganda purposes, they would have been displayed to travellers on the roadside & mounted on the village green as a rallying point for Lancastrian loyalists whilst discouraging Yorkist incursions into their lands. At that time even an illiterate peasant would have understood its meaning.
It is however unique now as all other examples showing their family's disgrace, were destroyed by the Yorkist kings Edward lV & Richard lll
Its meaning was lost and as it was later thought to mock the monarchy in general, it was named instead "the defiance"
(Clockwise from noon)
CROWNED HELM = Richard Duke of York; his shield reversed, under a paper crown
4 ROSES at the top of the shield - Edward lV, Edmund, George & Richard lll (Richard's sons) ;
BEAR = Richard Nevile, Earl o f Warwick the Kingmaker (York's nephew) whose emblem was the bear & ragged staff
SEA MONSTER = William Neville, Lord Fauconberg (Richard's brother in law) whose emblem was a fish hook it also alludes to his piracy exploits
HORSES = Henry & Humphrey Bourchier (Richard's nephews) both attainded with him, who used the bridled horse as their emblem
4 ROSES on dexter side of the shield = William, John, Edward & Thomas Bourchier (Richard's nephews)\)
NASTY (a spectral figure) = Joan Beaufort +++ (Richard's mother in law) who was illegitimate when born to John of Gaunt & his mistress Katherine Swynford and later legitimatised , this flaw according to Margaret of Anjou made the Yorkists a bastard line.
RAT - Cecily Neville (Richard's wife) daughter of Joan Beaufort +++ Known as "Proud Cis" The rat is a symbol of female lasciviousness, and also in this case the impurity of her bloodline
4 ROSES on the distaff side of the shield = Henry, William, John & Thomas (Richard's dead infant sons)
SQUIRREL = Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury (Richard's brother in law) The squirrel in heraldy symbolised the devil, it was also Richard Neville's crest emlemising prudence - Church of St. Bartholomew, Ashperton Herefordshire

Mt Nemrut, in southeastern Turkey, rises some 2150m. At the top in a World Heritage Site (ph.719): a set of statues, each likely, if standing to be ca 8m tall, but wth all the heads separated from the torsos. Believed to have been build on the orders of Antiochus I in ca 60 BCE, the site has an enormous tumulus (see in the background of some of my pictures) which may hold Antiochus I's tomb.
The climb up to the wind-swept top usually starts in the dark and on top the visitors who have braved the cold jostle for the best position to view the sunrise.
We are working with partners to ensure our communities feel safe in the places they call home.
After speaking with residents, we identified several properties that were linked to anti-social behaviour and criminal activity in the Freehold neighbourhood.
On Friday 5 July, we secured closure orders for two properties. The order will last for 3 months.
Inspector Meena Yasin from GMP Rochdale said: “We have spoken to residents who have been unable to sleep at night, who are scared to carry out everyday activities within their own homes as a result of anti-social behaviour and the criminal activity of a small number of individuals exploiting the neighbourhood.
"Securing these closure orders is a really important step in creating positive change in the area, and we have been working closely with local residents and RBH to proactively tackle issues linked to these properties.
“We will always take action and work with our partner agencies to ensure those who engage in anti-social or nuisance behaviour are dealt with robustly and I would like to thank everyone who has opened their door and welcomed us into their houses, taken the time to speak to us, and contributed to our intelligence picture which has led to these results.
“There is palpable community spirit in this area, created by residents who have lived here for decades. We are working with them to rid the area of criminality.”

During the Second World War Maiden Newton was recognised as an important railhead for the D Day preparations. In recognition of this important role that Maiden Newton played during WW2 a group of local residents decided to put on an event in June 2008 called Maiden Newton at War. The event has been held every 2 years now.
