Germany 2017 - Maulbronn Monastery (German: Kloster Maulbronn) is a former Roman Catholic Cistercian Abbey and Protestant seminary located at Maulbronn in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.[2] The 850 year old, mostly Romanesque monastery complex, one of the best preserved examples of its kind in Europe,[3] is one of the very first buildings in Germany to use the Gothic style.[4] In 1993, the abbey was declared a UNESCO World Heritage The complex, surrounded by turreted walls and a tower gate, today houses the Maulbronn

Under the auspices of the abbot Bernard of Clairvaux, the Cistercians began major expansion into southern Germany. A knight named Walter von Lomersheim became very enthused in the spread of this order of monks and donated a stretch of land between to the Cistercian order. So it was that, in 1147, the monastery was founded by 12 monks who traveled from Alsace.[2] The main church, built in a style transitional from Romanesque to Gothic, was consecrated in 1178 by Arnold, Bishop of Speyer. A number of other buildings — infirmary, refectory, cellar, auditorium, porch, south cloister, hall, another refectory, forge, inn, cooperage, mill, and chapel — followed in the course of the 13th century. The west, east and north cloisters date back to the 14th century, as do most fortifications and the fountain house or lavatorium.

After the Reformation began in the year 1517, Ulrich, Duke of Württemberg, seized the monastery in 1504,[dubious – discuss] later building his hunting lodge and stables there. The monastery was pillaged repeatedly: first by the knights under Franz von Sickingen in 1519, then again during the German Peasants' War six years later. In 1534, Duke Ulrich secularised the monastery, but the Cistercians regained control — and Imperial recognition — under Charles V's Augsburg Interim. In 1556, Christoph, Duke of Württemberg, built a Protestant seminary, with Valentin Vannius becoming the first abbot two years later, odd, because the Reformation banned religious orders and abbots; Johannes Kepler studied there 1586–89.

In 1630, the abbey was returned to the Cistercians by force of arms, with Christoph Schaller von Sennheim becoming abbot. This restoration was short-lived, however, as Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden forced the monks to leave again two years later, with a Protestant abbot returning in 1633; the seminary reopened the following year, however the Cistercians under Schaller also returned in 1634. Under the Peace of Westphalia, in 1648, the confession of the monastery was settled in favour of Protestantism; with abbot Buchinger withdrawing in process. A Protestant abbacy was re-established in 1651, with the seminary reopening five years later. In 1692, the seminarians were removed to safety when Ezéchiel du Mas, Comte de Mélac, torched the school, which remained closed for a decade.

The monastery was secularised by Frederick I, King of Württemberg, in the course of the German Mediatisation in 1807, forever removing its political quasi-independence; the seminary merged with that of Bebenhausen the following year, now known as the Evangelical Seminaries of Maulbronn and Blaubeuren.

The monastery, which features prominently in Hermann Hesse's novel Beneath the Wheel, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1993. The justification for the inscription was as follows: "The Maulbronn complex is the most complete survival of a Cistercian monastic establishment in Europe, in particular because of the survival of its extensive water-management system of reservoirs and channels". Hesse himself attended the seminary before fleeing in 1891 after a suicide attempt, and a failed attempt to save Hesse from his personal religious crisis by a well-known theologian and faith healer.[6]

To represent Baden-Württemberg, an image of the Abbey appears on the obverse of the German 2013 €2 commemorative coin.

Leonardo - Like the intro states he is the leader. His orders are usually followed. He is the wisest, most experienced and balanced of the team. Leo often portrayed as the most serious and disciplined out of all the turtles. When the cartoon series starts out, he is shown with having a very level head, likewise to his leadership qualities in the comics.

He has a lot of responsibility on his hands, which can sometimes overwhelm him. He is very protective of his siblings and is willing to do anything for them. Leo acts as a big brother or a parental figure to his brothers and as a teacher's pet to Master Splinter. He was chosen to be the leader because of his willingness not by his skill.

Leonardo demonstrates many important qualities needed in a leader. Like his brothers, he is stealthy, can hide in the shadows, sneak around without being detected and uses hand to hand combat like ninjas do. Leo does his best to lead the team, but he sometimes second-guesses himself and his constant sibling rivalry with Raphael can cause problems for the team and puts a strain on his relationship with Raph.

Leonardo always takes Splinter's advice seriously, even though at times, his stubbornness starts to annoy his sensei. Leo gets confused whenever Splinter uses difficult phrases and quotes while giving away his wisdom, but he always takes it under consideration.

In the Leonardo One Shot 1986, Leonardo goes out for a run on the rooftops of New York City and is ambushed by the Foot Clan. He puts up an admirable fight against an army of Foot Ninja, but is eventually overwhelmed by them. Beaten to near unconsciousness, he is thrown through April O'Neil's apartment window. The remaining Turtles and Splinter are forced to continue the fight, but even with the aid of Casey Jones, the odds are against them. In the end, the building catches fire and the police arrive, but they secretly escape to Northampton. During this time, Leonardo recovers from his physical wounds. However, he has lost a great deal of confidence. While out hunting, he sees April fall through ice into a lake, and he rescues her. Leonardo has regains most of his confidence at this point.

In the Return to New York storyline (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (vol. 1) #19-21), Raphael demands that the Turtles return to New York to confront the Foot Clan and the Shredder. He accuses Leonardo of cowardice, and the arguing brothers soon come to a serious scrap. Leonardo is beaten by Raphael, who throws him through the wall of the barn and leaves the farm

alone.

The Turtles return to New York and reunite with their wayward brother in the old sewer lair. The three go along with Raphael's plan to storm the Foot Head Quarters, where once again Raphael goes off on his own to fight the Shredder. However, he is ambushed and beaten by the Shredder's Elite guard, but is rescued by Leonardo. This prompts Raphael to finally cede to Leonardo's leadership, leaving him to fight the Shredder. Leonardo engages in a bloody battle with Shredder that spills out onto the rooftop of the building. Leonardo ends the battle by decapitating the Shredder just as the building implodes. The Turtles later burn the Shredder's corpse in a funeral pyre in a nearby Manhattan harbor.

Leo is an extremely skilled martial artist and swordsman. His weapons of choice are a pair of katana blades which he uses in a traditional niten-ryu style. He has a good line of defense, and is the best at planning strategies. He is pretty strong when it comes to defense and counter attacks and he is mainly a well balanced ninja in terms of strength, speed, agility, and is intelligent.

He is named after Leonardo da Vinci and wears a blue bandana.

In the video games, Leonardo is the first turtle of choice. He is popular especially for beginner players of the TMNT games. Leonardo is portrayed as well-balanced, having, in all areas, strong but not extreme abilities and no glaring weaknesses ; however, Leonardo can usually inflict more damage.

In the New 2012 TMNT TV series, Leo loves a particular TV show called "Space Heroes" and tends to try to be like the hero on there, much to the annoyance of his brothers.

Leonardo's voice actor was Cam Clarke in the original 1987 cartoon. In the crossover movie Turtles Forever, this version of Leonardo is voiced by Dan Green and in the new 2012 series, Leo is voiced by Jason Biggs.

It may change to white with color bleaching.

The first dorsal spine, the illicium is modified and is used as a fishing rod. Its extremity is endowed with a characteristic esca (lure), which looks like a small fish with a pinkish to brownish coloration. The pectoral fins are angled and help, with the pelvic fins, to move the fish on the bottom and to keep a stable position for ambush.

the long face Kachina ?

they want to slaughter (they call it hunting) my brothers and sister wolves of Idaho and Montana.

what happened to the word kind in humankind?

Try to be kind; a world filled with kindness is a nicer place to live.

~Urgelt

from Defenders of Wildlife website:

More than a hundred wolves were killed the last time the Bush Administration lifted federal protections for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies this past spring. Now the Bush/Cheney Administration is once again eliminating vital federal protections for these wolves.

Defenders is already calling on the incoming Obama Administration and Congress to overturn this eleventh-hour attack on our wolves. And our lawyers are preparing immediate legal action to challenge the latest delisting of wolves in the Northern Rockies region.

from the NRDC website:

In a cruel parting shot before leaving office, the Bush

Administration has stripped wolves in Idaho and Montana of their

Endangered Species protection -- leaving them at the mercy of

two states that are gunning for them.

Hundreds of wolves are effectively on death row. As soon as the

hunting seasons begin and "Open Fire" orders are issued, state

officials and hunters will fan out through Greater Yellowstone

and Central Idaho in search of an animal that should be on the

Endangered Species list.

NRDC is racing to court to stop this slaughter before it can

begin.

As you know, this is the second time that the Bush

Administration has removed federal protections from wolves in

the Northern Rockies.

Last spring, more than 110 wolves were brutally killed in as

many days. The wolf-killing rampage only stopped after NRDC and

11 other conservation groups prevailed in federal court --

thanks to your support!

We must win again -- because the plight of wolves has never been

more dire. Yellowstone's wolf population has already declined,

as wolf pups die of a yet-to-be-determined disease.

The bottom line is: Greater Yellowstone's wolves urgently need

and deserve federal protection.

thanks everyone...

let's put the pressure on our representatives to stop the de-listing.
