I made this photo while standing at the base of the Athens Avalon Greenspace three blocks from our home in San Francisco Excelsior District. There are many hidden and historic staircases throughout San Francisco's hilly 49 square miles. The 99 steps of the now Athens Avalon Greenspace are a childhood memory. The area used to be wooden stairs along a steep hillside, devoid of any but wild vegetation. Over the years the stairs and railing has been upgraded several times and the hill was terraced with retaining walls in preparation for the planting of the Greenspace. I always counted 100 steps, but the official plaque states 99 steps. I shot this using the camera on my Samsung S10e cell phone that I carried in lieu of my Canon for a few weeks after the pandemic lockdown orders in our fair city by the bay.
RIGHT NOW, Palestinian activists, Samer Hussam and Hijazi Abu Sbaih, are staying inside the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Jerusalem in protest to refuse Israel's orders of eviction. Samer Hussam states: I was born in Jerusalem in 1987. I lived there all my life except for a few years during my studies in Egypt. As part of my work, I often travel to participate in conferences and youth exchanges in Arab countries and across the world. Last August I travelled to Lebanon to participate in the 25th Arab Youth Camp. 28 hours after my return to Jerusalem on 17 August 2015, I was arrested by Israeli occupation forces and subjected to an interrogation that lasted 44 days. Eventually, I was conditionally released under open ended house arrest and accused of traveling to an "enemy state" in violation of the "Israeli" emergency regulations of 1952 which place a ban on travel to enemy state of the Zionist regime. These "laws" and policies are forced on us Palestinians despite the fact that we don't recognize these laws, and the fact that Palestinians hold Lebanon to be a sister state which is naturally, geographically and culturally connected to Palestine. After 81 days under house arrest, "Israeli" courts cancelled my house arrest and on the same day I received an Israeli military order banishing me for five months from my city of birth, Jerusalem. These illegal practices and policies are increasingly being used against Palestinians; this month alone, four Palestinian youth were banished from Jerusalem. "Israel" aims to empty Jerusalem from its youth and we must stand against this policy. Therefore, I, Samer Hussam Abu Eisheh, declare that I won't comply with this unjust banishment order and will be staying in the headquarters of the International Conmittee of the Red Cross in Jerusalem along with Hijazi Abu Sbaih who received a similar banishment order. #ImNotLeaving - ift.tt/1YCyAkG

Э(E)- series of steam engine were designed by Russian engineer Łopuszyński, Wacław Marian in 1909 and firstly produced in the Russian Empire. In 1920 in the first years after the Socialist Revolution of 1917 and Civil war young Soviet Russia ordered engines of simplified project of 1917 y in Sweden and Germany with total 500 of the Esh and 700 of Er-series built consequently. Steam engines of the Em (Эм) seria evolved as further development of Eu-type (Эу), that was the very first E-type engine produced in Soviet Russia in 1926—1930 in quantity of 2500 ones after the orders of the Esh and Er-types in Sweden and Germany, consequently. Engines of Eu (Эу) seria were the first E-model built in Soviet Russia. About 2500 ones were produced in 1926—1930. Unfortunately, the coupling weight of the Eu locomotive increased by 5 tons. In order to improve performance in the next model, the steam pressure in the boiler was raised from 12 to 14 kgf/cm2. Other design changes were made concerning the water feeding scheme. Welded joints were used for the first time. All this resulted in a reduction of the total weight by three tons and lower load on the rails. Steam locomotives of Em series were built from 1932 to 1935. A total of 2325 units were built. Since the Em model had a significant reduction in the load on the 4 and 5 wheelset, which was rather a negative result, the next modernization made it possible to improve the performance and at the same time compensate for the weight problem by increasing the volume of the firebox. Thus, in Эр (Er) model the firebox grew in length by 540 mm, which required the frame to be lengthened by 45 cm. Accordingly, the grate area increased (to 5.09 m2 vs. 4.46 m2) and the heating surface increased to 200 m2. All this resulted in a 10-15% increase in power output and efficiency compared to the previous Eu and Em models.
After WW2 big series of the last project Er (model of 1944 y) were produced in Hungary, Romania, Poland. Total production of the E-type exceeds 10853 ones that is absolute record for the locomotives.

Uncoursed limestone rubble, ashlar dressings, with slate hanging at top of gabled right bay; jettied and timber-framed first floor of porch has close studding. Gabled stone slate roof; stone ridge and internal stacks. Late C12 plan form unclear: remodelled as L-plan in Arts and Crafts style with rear left wing in 1924. 2 storeys and attic; 6-window range, includes gabled fronts of right outer bay, central bay and gabled porch right of centre. Very fine late C12 doorway has deep-moulded arch set on 3 orders of colonettes with stiff-leaf capitals. Porch in front has early C19 nine-panelled door, with dolphin knocker, set in moulded wood architrave: jettied first floor of late C16 porch has wood-mullioned ovolo-moulded canted bay window supported on brackets carved in low relief. Early C20 canted bay window with stone-mullioned lights in central bay to left. 2-window range to left has timber lintels over central C20 door, with early C20 casement to right: late C16/C17 two-light ovolo-moulded cross-window to left, and similar 2-light windows above which include reused late C16/C17 mullions to right. Late C12 roll-moulded arris to rear right corner of parlour. Side walls and rear remodelled by Blow and Billerus, who added similar canted bay windows and hipped roof dormers. EH Listing
