Messing around with an Orbis Ring Flash which I hired. I really like it! I'll definitely be hiring it again, if not buying one...

Taken at the same time as this shot with the same set up.

• Canon 580ex-II bare, camera left on 1/64 power

Just wanted to let you know: the Sony and Minolta strobes work extremeley well with the Orbis Ring Flash. I've tried a 5400HS on a Minolta Dynax / Maxxum 9 (with film of course) and a 5600HS with a Sony Alpha 350 (digital).

To make the combination a little bit more stable I did two modification that will be uploaded soon. On of the mods is a holder that connects the whole Orbis / strobe / camera on one smart plate.

Strobist info: shoot through umbrella (Westscott collapsible), pocket wizards, Nikon Coolpix P5100. Umbrella above camera right, white board on camera left.

I love to shoot this lure and I love it even more when I can use the Orbis Flash because the reflection on the eye is sooooo cool! Anyway, is a very simple set I put together on the 4 square meters box we had at the fair in Bologna, the good thing is that I used a piece of black velvet as a background and could wrao it a bit. By doing so I managed to put the lure in this position, that I believe is quite dynamic.

Had the pleasure of meeting this fella the other day, on a shoot at The Yokohama Country & Athletics Club. This one's going into their magazine.

Pape Mour Faye formerly of the Yokohama B-CORSAIRS basketball team. 23 years old, from Senegal, as tall as a house and as quiet as a mouse. Speaks four languages but he's economic on the conversational front. Lovely chap though.

Converted to mono and dropped into an old scan of a Polaroid film border I had kicking around from years ago. It just seemed to totally suit this portrait.

The Orbis Ring Flash sure is a great light modifier for my fishing portraits, is just a tad bulky to carry on a suitcase full of lures, reels and all kind of tackle. Fort this reason I not always bring it with me, but when I do I never regret. She is pretty, has a gorgeous smile and can perfectly hold a fish, a great plus for a fishing photo. I love the specular ring on her sunglasses, is a kind of brand signature of the Orbis.

What happened with the background here? Well, the light from the Softbox III wasn't evenly spread, because the background vinyl was not 100% flat. I could have even that out by overexposing the white but I decided instead. I enhanced the darker area, put some blue color, clarity and we have some kind of "river" flowing behind the lure. The Vario Crank has been suspended with a couple of monofilamente traces.

Anoter piece of the laser+smoke session. The main difference here is that the smoke is being used to create the light trails on the background, without it the ony see you would see is red dots scattered around. This is a 4 secondes aperture

Dripping

I think that the best part about corn syrup (aside from it actually sticking where I wanted it at first) is that you can get these great drips if you time it right.

Apologize me if I used the same lure again and again, during this session I wanted to concentrate on the lights, not the product. This is quite easy to understand and do, is about light painting done with the Laser pen with the single ray. I'm not sure if I like the light trail hiding behind the lure or not, maybe it would be nicer separate from the body but this way gives a sort of 3D appearance to it...you will tell me.

Orbis Ring Flash

This is my first test with the Orbis ringflash for the fishing portraits. I love the light you can get out of this light modifier, the shadows are quite soft and the light even. Here I used it off camera left triggering the SB800 with Nikon CLS. The power was set to manual around 1/2, I was underexposing the sky with a smaller aperture

This is a great shot as such but it's the first time use of my Orbis Ring Flash. Need to buy a handle when it comes out and a TTL cord

info SB28 , 1/4 power fired on manual

Here the OrbisFlash ir the main ligt and the Lastolite Umbrella box just a bit of fill. I used a Tokina 100mm Macro f2.8 for this image, and I must say I'm very happy with the lens. I love the reflection of the Umbrella Box in the eye of the lure. Both SB800 have been triggered with Nikon CLS

I was tired of always holding the Orbis in one hand and holding / operating the camera with the other. The idea was to built a holder that can carry the orbis, the strobe, as well as the camera. Fairly simple and easy to use. I know it looks bulky, but its really fun to work with this unit. And if I'm going to use it as a kind of beauty dish, it can be mounted on a tripod too.

The advantage(s) compared with other solutions: relatively cheap (even if you have to order the piece of aluminium, bend and drilled in a shop or on the Internet), stable, not as bulky and complex and it does not put any tension on the filter screw (in my case the strobe plus orbis weighs approx. 800 grams).

So over the weekend I tried to adopt a dog. My girlfriend and I had spotted him in passing a few weeks back at an adoption event, but I wanted to set up some 'play time' with him before I made any final decisions. Plus my sister hadn't seen him either so we all went down together this past Saturday to see him again.

Fast forward to getting him out of his cage. He comes willingly and with earnest as my sister leads him on his leash. I bend down and give him a pat and rub, everything is fine. As we start to walk him over to the 'play area', he starts to refuse and pulls back on the leash. The lady from the adoption agency says, 'Oh just pick him up and carry him, he gets stubborn sometimes'. The dog is only 17 lbs, so I reach down and pick him up easily, holding him with both hands. As we meet each other's gaze, BAMN, he bites me in the face!

3 puncture wounds, one on my chin and two under my jaw. A trip to the doctors and a few stitches later, I've turned into band-aid face for the week. So unreal.
