From my second shoot with Tara, and totally her idea. See, told you she rocks. :-)
Those of you who've tuned into even a few pages of my stuff on here will know I have a big thing for photographing the gentle and intimate side of women, and to try and treat them and their inner selves with some care and concern. That said, sometimes photos need a bit of a shakeup and something to make you sit back and pay attention.
All too easy to become achingly contrived in the pursuit of trying to cause a reaction, and for me personally, I think that's what I'm always most scared of. Provocation needs to be a by-product not the intention I think, and maybe somewhere deep under that process lies the trick to not becoming a cliché. But here, for nothing other than the reason a bit of bright colour and something unorthodox never hurt anyone, and it doesn't hurt to throw something different into the mix, here's Tara in her best 'come get me' heels and some smalls... :-)

MIkey and Lexi's personalities couldn't be further apart when it comes to getting the portraits taken. Lexi prefers to model, while Mikey prefers to ...well, just be Mikey. :)

I've gotten another 2 months medical leave. Word from the doc is that the leg is healing, but slowly. Bittersweet i guess. I miss going out period. And I'm dying to bring out the jinbeis for field test.
I'm planning to catch up on some photog books/dvds, that i have to improve & also I'm hoping to pick up a new language. Thai/Viet maybe, not sure how I'm gonna get started.
We shall see how it goes.

This was one of the last shots I took of Akari on Saturday, a quick one with the Orbis Ringflash attached to my Nikon SB-800 strobe. Lens? The 'plastic fantastic' as I call it: Nikon's 28-80mm f/3.3 - 5.6 G series kit lens. On the face of it this lens is a piece of cheap shit.... but, if you stop it down a little then it becomes an awesome short zoom and at 4000Yen used, a very affordable [almost throw-away] alternative to the massive, heavy and expensive 24-70. The flash helps with the sharpness but a little stopped-down this lens is pretty damn sharp and it weighs nothing... so it's ideal for close-in shots with flash especially.
Very 'high-key' this shot and it was quickly done as we were wrapping up a lovely day of shooting and the beer was calling. No make-up person for this shoot as she'd caught the flu, so I would usually not get in so extra-close when we didn't have someone around to make sure the model was looking 150%. But, boosting the exposure makes the skin glow anyway and a little bit of PP to help that even further has made a pretty OK sort of shot I think. Sort of like a Geisha's makeup.
Anyway, here she is....

In a raining afternoor, bored to death I transformed a normal studio shot into a fake HDR. The result is in front of your eyes, more details and brighter colors that usual, but also a tad more noise that I had to fight in Lightroom. This is just a test...this is just a test... this is just a test... this is just a test.... And it really is, but I'd like to hear what you think about it, wto heads think better than one...and what about a hundred heads?

Johnathan is the CEO of Fitness for Freedom, personal trainers who come to you. I was taking stills during a video shoot and had the chance to take a few portraits of him too. I couldn't resist the blue-painted wall in the living room as a background.
Strobist info: Canon 600EX-RT through a 36" Photek Softligther II (gold reflector) on-axis above and angled towards the subject. Another 600ex-RT through the orbis® Ring Flash on-axis for fill and to get some light into his eyes. Finally, a small Westcott silver/gold reflector is held just under and out of frame to bounce light back.
I was tired always holding the Orbis in one hand and holding / operating the camera with the other. The idea was to built a holder that can carry the orbis, the strobe, as well as the camera. Fairly simple and easy to use. I know it looks bulky, but its really fun to work with this unit. And if I'm going to use it as a kind of beauty dish it can be mounted on a tripod to. See also part 2 in the stream.

So i finally got myself an Orbis ring flash + arm. I ordered last thursday and got it today. I love www.bhphotovideo.com, they deliver super fast & provide solid packaging.
I can't wait to do some portraiture with this baby.
The arm is really well built, although a hot shoe isn't provided i had no problems getting one for it. Mounted it on my 580EXII fits nicely, alittle shakey around the ring/lens area though. I wonder if it'll scuff anything, nothing some gaffer won't solve though.

Today I had to make some photos for a trade magazine and set up my studio. When I was done with what I had to do, I picked up a couple of lures and took some shots. I already have some images of theis Vario Crankbait, but I thought that these colors would be pretty cool to photograph. I have a cool full body image and then this close up.
Is quite amazing to see the amount of details still available even at f16; the Tokina 100mm f2.8 AT-X Macro is avery nice lens. Camara Nikon D7000
The Orbis Flash light is being supported by the other SB800 through a Lastolite EzyBox, a very good companion for these kind of works. Both speedlights have been triggered by the Nikon CLS
Please, if you can, write personal comments rather than pasting group logos. Be kind and don't send invitation to award groups (P1/C3 and alike), I browse Flickr a lot and post a personal comment when I see a photo that I like, not because I have to do it. I'm sure you understand. Thanks

Three or four mad days of shooting last week, for the Schwarzkopf hair academy in Shiodome. This was at the rehearsal for the final event, which featured loads of models, dancers, live hair-cutting etc etc. Steve is a British dancer working with the touring event. Nice chap.
First proper portrait using the Orbis Ringflash. Very impressed so far. Lots more to come and a review of the flash on Japanorama soon.

So today I was one of a lucky hadful of people who got to spend some time being given a Strobist demo by Dave Hobby himself! Happy days. Unfortunately I missed the first hour of the 2 hour session but managed to hook up with the rest of the group just prior to the shoot you see here taking place.
Ring flash seems to be the in thing at the minute so it was interesting to see it being put to use. It was a 3 light setup. The 2 you see in the images above and then one being held by me snooted onto the wall in the background.
The big thing I got from the session is that it's OK to chimp! Sometimes I think I take to many test shots working out the levels of each light individually. Seeing David doing exactly this was a real confidence boost. He also used another favourite trick of mine which was giving his model a mark to stand on. Basically the intersection of the paving slabs.
We only got to see the final image on the LCD but it did look cool! Hopefully Nik (the "model") will find this and post a link to the final shot when Dave sends it through to him.
(if you're in this pic could you please "note" yourself - thanks)

This is a yet-to-be-released lure by the innovative italian brand Molix, don't even know the name yet. I have seen it myself for the first time last week-end in Bologna at a fishing trade show. Since I knew I had to take the photos of the new products I brought with myself my portable studio and they provided a black velvet cloth for the background. Two lights here, no background light at all, I was working on a small round table with a 60cm diamater and there was not enough room for it. Let me tall you that this lure is probably among the most beautiul ones I ever seen in my life, the design is just spectacular, like a sport car. As soon as I post a full view off it you will be able to understand what I mean.

Let me start introduce my latest child, the laser pen... Few days ago I have red an article in Strobist (strobist.blogspot.com/2012/01/few-pointers-on-beauty-phot...) and really like the idea of doing the same with the products. I quickly made an interner search and found the small and unexpensive laser pen that you have seen in my previous photo, with a special cap that can project light patterns in addiction to the single ray of green light. As soon as I got it I put up my home studio with a black vinyl background and two speedlights and started playing wit it. I love the result, and this is one of the simpliest photo I have got, others are a tad more complicated because I have added another tool that I will mention in another post.
I have to mention that this has opened a new way of doing studio shots for me, in fact I had to forget the usual aperture and shutter speed I would have normally used, and work on longer exposures. At f20 I needed 4 second exposure to be able to have the right amount of laser light recorded by the sensor

My friends Don & Jen wrote a book, they asked me to take a photo for their profile page and this isn't it! (There's a less 'harsh' image they chose). If you're interested in the Ottawa food scene (and who isn't) you can check out their book on Amazon.
If you're in Ottawa they will have the book at the International Food & Drink Soirée Saturday October 3rd.

I call it "zen" shot, kind of minimalistic with the use of other elemts integrated in the frame to produce a richer image. As you might easily understand, I know nothing about zen or Japanese decorative culture for that matter but I'm sure you will apologize me for my very own interpretation.
