The Space Age was a time of bewildering change, yet also of great optimism about the future. Conceived at a time of general consensus in 1958 and designed to celebrate and promote the U.S. entry into the Space Age, the 1964/65 Fair opened instead amidst the turbulent conflicts of the Mid-Sixties. Robert Moses's presidency of the World's Fair Corporation became another flash-point for the conflicts emerging in the spheres of civil rights, planning, architecture, and art in New York. Donald De Lue’s sculpture The Rocket Thrower illustrates the conflicts between Moses's conservative aesthetic, the press, and the changing culture of the 1960's. Explore the "space age" art and architecture that survives in Flushing Meadows today which recalls those times and their contradictory currents.
This tour was part of a weekend long festival with Partners in Preservation, celebrating the Rocket Thrower. The statue is included in the MAS’s Adopt-A-Monument program which through private funding conserves and maintains works of public art. The Rocket Thrower is the last of 36 outdoor monuments in this program waiting to be restored.

Things will get better.
I had to tell my group of 8 year olds today about the test I will be giving them next week, so I asked my friend to come into my class and translate to make sure they could prepare the right material. I had written a list of things they needed to know on the board, and there is one little boy in the class who thinks he is so funny. He had erased my list, which I found to be quite rude. So, I told him so, and to make sure he would understand, I had my friend translate what I said into Japanese. I told the class that it was rude and that I had taken my own time to make a study list for them so that they could do well on the test, and that I really didn't think it was funny. The resulting translation was, "kesanai de kudasai" ("Please don't erase the board"). Honestly, I could have produced this level of communication myself in Japanese. I get the feeling this happens a lot. The japanese translator always seems to implement some japanese politeness buffer. This is a bit frustrating to me. It must really drive the Germans nuts.

First match of the season when Aldershot played Darlington on 8th Aug 2009. All the optimism of a new season, the good weather, trees in full leaf.
Darlington would be relegated out of the Football League that season after 3 managers and a raft of loan and free signings. So much for optimism??

I made these cards in May 1977 after I just got my PhD
No more working at Gif sur Yvette Research institute (where I did work before for 4 years). And not yet got the appointment to Bethesda's NIH (where I did work later for more then 3 years).
In all, I did scientific research for about 8 years, before coming back to France and changing again, going into teaching, sales and founding a Personal Computer Pioneer enterprise in Paris.
This card, that I did use later in USA, reminds me of "never lose hope"! It is good to think "i got it" even when all is not yet in your hands. Yes, I had a promise but not the paperwork and those come just three days before my plane was due to leave France for US, and when all my belonging were no more in the flat I lived. All was send or dispersed. I cling to hope and at the end, at least that time, all finished well.
I did cling to hope to remain in USA after three years, one year at a time my contract did get prolonged, but after 3 ½ my optimism did not get me what I wanted then. I had to go back to France, again to the unknown. Build yet again a new life, in a new place and find a new profession.
Which I did.
Sometimes, the "fate" or "destiny" knows better then us, as I had a wonderful new life finally after going back, from Washington DC to Paris.
There is always yet another chance in life. We are never too old for it. Of course, we have to seize and use it.

My grandson, Bader or Badouri and I trying to communicate and connect mentally. I think we managed somehow, especially that he heard my voice many times earlier!
1. Cold out today. I was feeling cozy at my desk and had to force myself outside over lunch. I used the FTF photo capture as my excuse and mission. Sad to think I would have missed out on this crisp sunny day otherwise.
2. My friends teased me about how my outfit didn't match, but I liked it that way. What fun is matching all the time? Look at how much fun it is to see little kids wearing multiple patterns and a collision of primary colors.
3. Self-timers in well-traversed places like Lafayette Park are always interesting. People sometimes ask to take your picture, pause to stay out of the frame while you are getting your photo, and give you odd looks.
4. Did I tell you that Felkerino decided to start a #fridaycoffeeclub at Swings Coffee Shop? It's true, and it's so enjoyable. Fridays at 8 a.m. It's a velocentric #bikeDC crowd, but all are welcome. When I was in high school I worked in my town coffee shop. I never understood why all these retired farmers showed up to just hang out and drink coffee. Two decades later, I've figured it out.
5. Diligence, practice, courage, optimism, and gratitude. Feeling and acting on it all this week. Patience was one area that, upon reflection, could have been better. When will I get more patient? It's taking forever!

everything seems to be going pretty bad. but you know what? im gonna smile. because i have life. and because im not dead. im not going to let the bad things get in my way and consume me. im gonna smile, because it's a new day.
