"The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." - Winston Churchill
Long live optimism. Challenges are all opportunities......seek them out.

Creating Mood with Colour-After a long week of nothing but gray skies and snow, this photo was taken in the plant section of Walmart.
My sun hat was nicely discounted, as it's an off-season purchase. Syracuse's frequent gray days make the cheery yellow a nice reminder of sunny days to come. It performed beautifully on a first use at Clark Reservation, and will get more serious testing in Phoenix next month.
The Library of Congress has a flickr account*, and it's one which I keep in my contacts list. Noticed today they had posted a front page from the New York Tribune, one from a little over a century ago. Apparently it was the paper's Thanksgiving Day edition of 1909. The headline is not exactly one that stands out and sums up an era. Still, though, it caught my attention -- perhaps because of its tone of understatement ("a few drawbacks") and something about the way it can be considered applicable not just to the winter of 1909-10, but now as well.
The other connection is, it seems like it does suggest a similar point to that which the President used in concluding his State of the Union address the other evening, when he said:
"These words and these stories tell us something about the spirit of the people who sent us here. They tell us that even in the most trying times, amid the most difficult circumstances, there is a generosity, a resilience, a decency, and a determination that perseveres; a willingness to take responsibility for our future and for posterity.
"Their resolve must be our inspiration. Their concerns must be our cause. And we must show them and all our people that we are equal to the task before us.
"And if we do – if we come together and lift this nation from the depths of this crisis; if we put our people back to work and restart the engine of our prosperity; if we confront without fear the challenges of our time and summon that enduring spirit of an America that does not quit, then someday years from now our children can tell their children that this was the time when we performed, in the words that are carved into this very chamber, 'something worthy to be remembered.'"
Sometimes, you've got to work at being optimistic, but it's better than giving in to the alternatives.

Not sure if this is the smart thing to do yet. It has been freezing heavily for 5 days now, but still...

To set the scene.......... it is a cold Saturday afternoon in January on Bexhill seafront, I have just parked the car to take a walk along the seafront. A check of the cars thermometer tells me it is two degrees above freezing, but the cold wind makes it feel much colder, after a few minutes of walking I realise I should have opted for a warmer coat and brought the gloves.
I think the cost of diesel running the engine on this Ice Cream van, to keep the freezer going, must have been much greater than the profit from any sales {if any} during the afternoon.
