I found three of the four Barred Owlets born this Spring, they were flying around chasing squirrels practicing their hunting skills, then landing relatively low in the trees to watch for unsuspecting prey. It was nice to see they are thriving and doing well.

Lindisfarne / Holy Island, Northumberland, England

I'm back! I've partly caught up on comments and commenting on others posted images but got more to go.

Well I can certainly say Northumbria was worth the trip even if the weather wasn't fantastic for photography. Having said that I did get some nice skies/light amongst the grey.

Saturday morning (if you can call 4am the morning! looked pretty grey as we 5 Togs plus Melvin loaded ourselves into his minibus and set off for Holy Island. We had to be on Holy Island by 05:55 if we wanted to get over the causeway which we duly did. We set up in the above location to shoot Lindisfarne Castle with little optimism of anything better than a moody sky shot.

However, as we approached sunrise some colour started to appear off to the left and as we watched it grew and grew. The gap in the cloud wasn't large but it certainly gave us a better sky than we were expecting.

I shot sets of 3 to bracket the images but due to movement of the boats I just went for the shorter shutter speed image and raised the shadows a bit. I made a duplicate layer and processed the ground and sky separately and then merged them. I wanted to just raise the exposure a little for the ground and castle.

Plenty more images to come but having the island pretty much to ourselves at that time of 'day' really was a lovely experience and the sunrise colours made it more so.

The future is so bright you might need sunglasses! Maybe not the best title but it was the only thing I came up with. I wanted to post a more uplifting image then my last one. This I think isn't really my style per say (if I even have one) but I like the bright colors and the mix of blue and yellow. And I am still capable of being happy there are days when we all feel a little wilted and down.

Thank you everyone have a great day!!

Optimism & spring is in the air for many while others still have trepidation as Lockdown has been released in England.

Growing bulbs indoors. Fiddled with photo again because it is good to learn new things. And to try to feel optimistic.

Phil (Red-bellied woodpecker), is one of my favorite visitors. He has personality plus, that's for sure. I was messing around outside taking photos of flowers and butterflies, stopping to feed the fish and water some plants and so on when Phil came to the yard. He did not go unnoticed, although I continued going about my business as he went about his, helping to clear the trees of insects.

When Phil arrived he started in oak three, moving up and down and all around the branches. Then it was time to clean oak two in the same manor. Phil takes his time as he inspects and cleans each tree. Finally, he made his way to oak one. Oak one is above the palm stump where I place peanuts each morning. Normally, Phil cleans the tree, then begins going back and forth from the palm stump to get a peanut then to the tree to enjoy it.

Upon arrival to oak one, Phil began calling very loudly. His behavior gained my full attention. Often when I hear such calls there is a predator or two nearby. This was not the case today. Apparently, the squirrels had already eaten the nuts and Phil was displeased to find the stump lacking treats. He let me know right away upon his discovery that the palm stump was empty. Phil flew back and forth from the tree to the stump, calling loudly until he saw me moving toward the house. As I walked swiftly by, Phil became somewhat quiet, his calls became softer and less frequent as he sat still on a branch above the stump.

Into the house I scurried, returning quickly with peanuts as Phil patiently waited on the branch. I placed the nuts and without hesitation, Phil flew to the stump. He didn't even give me time to back away. He stayed at the stump after grabbing a nut, instead of heading to an oak branch. I stood watching him at arms length for a minute or two. Then I went over to the camera, picked it up and took a few shots. I think it's safe to say that my little visitors have me pretty well trained.

I hope your day is full of delight and optimism. Happy snapping to all.

Dedicated to my mother-in-law, who left us a few days ago. I appreciated her optimism and will to live and it was an honour to have known her. She proved us again and again that it is well worth fighting, even if it seems hopeless.

Unfortunately, she lost the last one after all.

Rest in peace. We will always honor you.

May 2018 bring you many optimistic windows of opportunity!

Happy New Year!

“After years of having a dog, you know him. You know the meaning of his snuffs and grunts and barks. Every twitch of the ears is a question or statement, every wag of the tail is an exclamation.”

― Robert R. McCammon, Boy's Life

“A person can learn a lot from a dog, even a loopy one like ours. Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things-a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight. And as he grew old and achy, he taught me about optimism in the face of adversity. Mostly, he taught me about friendship and selflessness and, above all else, unwavering loyalty.”
