Many moons ago - when I joined Marconi in 2000 - many of my colleagues were cock-a-hoop about the prospects of the company. Things were looking good. If the share price reached £16.03 everyone would get a shit-load of shares and it would be champagne all 'round.
Once 2001 came along it wasn't looking so hot. A few years later and there were a few tears being spilled into beers as the share price dipped into single digits. That's single digits pence.
A couple of more years further on and Ericsson bought us and saved the day. Optimism abounds! The year after: Beeston site closure, but at least they're building a brand new state-of-the-art R&D centre down near Coventry.
November 2009: hearts broken all over again. R&D engineers in China were breaking out the bubbly while us Brits took a swift kick to the googlies.
I found this today and I salute whoever has kept this all through the bad times. We've had a LOT of those over the last nine years.
It's onwards and upwards for me. I'm not taking this lying down, I'm going to get back up and do something positive. I'm going to do something better

at or near the mid-point, the 2006 3-m half-marathon route entered a remarkable stretch-- one of the more hideous pavements in christendom-- Burnet Road from just north of Justin Lane to 34th St., about twenty long blocks of telephone poles, car lots, muffler shops, decaying strip centers and tattoo parlors
The sculpture's real name is supposedly, "Eternal Optimism," but almost everyone in Knoxville simply refers to it as "Rowboat Man."
I'll play... As an optimistic pessimist, I find myself dwelling on the scenarios in which Obama "does poorly" for whatever reason (i.e., election day chaos and dirty tricks in Florida) and yet still wins. Here are two scenarios....Assuming, of course, that in the 269 scenario the U.S. House of Representatives does indeed confirm Obama as President. I am always heartened by the fact that McCain can win Ohio, Pennsylvania, AND Florida, and yet still lose, without even entertaining the notion of Obama winning North Carolina (which at this point seems fairly likely according to polling). There have also been murmerings of them splitting Maine or Nebraska, which would swing the tie one way or the other.

I'm starting my 7th year of writing these Daily Inspiration posts. Someone asked me why I do them.
In an increasingly negative world, I write them as much for those who follow me as much as I write them for myself. Starting each day with some thinking as to the good I might find in the world around me helps me dispel some of the bad that I know I will see. I don't think anyone focused on the future can do so with a foundation of negativity.
Here's how I take on the issue of negativity on stage:
So with that said, here's what I think optimists need to do each and every day.
See the future as an opportunity, not a threat.
Don't fear the future.
Work the future faster.
Learn how to interpret any particular trend in terms of its upside, not the downside.
Don't fight the future.
Ignore pessimists.
Don't hang out with negative people.
Battle each and every moment of negativity.
Find motivation in small wins.
Clinging to your past is probably the worst thing you can do right now./
Stop trying old solutions to new problems.
Just because it's not happening right now doesn't mean that it never will.
Don't presume your business model will survive the next 5 years.
Don't feel bad about the mistakes you've made - view some of them as a pathway to success.
Stop saying it can't be done - just do it already!
Don't hide from problems - learn from them.
Use aggressive fear of change as a basic personal motivation.
Don't let uncertainty cloud your vision.
Spend every day tuning your roadmap for how you plan to live your life.
Don't be selfish - be magnanimous.
Stop being surprised at surprises.
Avoid angry people.
Make the best of the worst moments.
Regularly nurture your optimism - its fertilizer for your soul.
Take more time to enjoy what you enjoy.
Remind yourself you don't need to love every waking moment - it's ok to get down.
Lighten your mood - avoid the heavy.
Move on from bad things faster.
Remind yourself it could be worse.
Remember it's ok to feel down sometimes - but work hard to chase the 'up.'
Remind yourself that your future only sucks if you make it suck.
