The main altar has a supremely Baroque column structure with twisted columns and a lintel with an openwork profiled cornice; it was designed by Jan Ferdinand Schor in 1715, who also participated in its decoration. On the sides are statues of St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross from the workshop of Matěj Václav Jäckel. At the top, an image of the Adoration of the Lord, called Our Lady Victorious, is inserted into a radiant halo under a royal crown. Behind the altar hangs a monumental painting of Emperor Ferdinand II and his son, Czech King Ferdinand III, praying to the Virgin Mary for the victory of the Catholics in the Battle of White Mountain. Kneeling before them is the Carmelite Dominik à Jesu Maria with an image of the Adoration of the Lord in his left hand. In a cloud above them, the Virgin Mary with the patron saints intercedes with God the Father for the success of the battle. The painting was painted by Antonín Stevens of Steinfels for the original altarpiece from 1641.

Built in 1896/97, the architect was Ewan Harper. His openwork spire is very much a local landmark and icon. Following the discovery of dry rot, the church closed for worship in 2009 when the congregation joined with the Parish Church of St Luke's to form a Local Ecumenical Partnership known as The Bridge Church. (See previous postings)

In 2014 the building was sold and is now subject to a planning application to demolish and replace it with a residential development. It is hoped that a campaign, led by the Victorian Society, will be able to save the tower and/or the spire.

This is the last one of the series of historic planes on the parapet of Anamori-bashi.

This plane did not fly. Chuhachi Ninomiya tried to make a power plane until he heard about Wright brothers. See the article in Wikipedia for more detail information. It mentions his "Tamamushi Model".

St Peter's in Wallingford is distinguished by it's unusual openwork spire, an eccentric example of late 18th century gothic. The church itself dates mostly from the 1760s and replaces a medieval building destroyed during the siege of Wallingford in the Civil War.

The interior is spacious and attractive with a coffered ceiling over the nave. The focal point is the apse (rebuilt in the early 20th century) which has a 1918 window by Morris & Co at it's centre designed by John Henry Dearle in his characteristic, Burne Jones-influenced style.

The church was declared redundant in 1971 and is now vested in the Churches Conservation Trust. It is kept locked but a key can be obtained from the Tourist Information Office.

A wonderful hilltop church, sensitively restored by Temple Moore 1906-11. C13 base to tower and arades, a C14 north chapel, much else appears Perp. including the tower top with openwork parapet and eight pinnacles. C18 brick parpaets to the aisles chancel and chapel, the porch is C18 as well. Inside there is a C15 screen to the north chapel, a C17 pulpiyt and a west gallery of 1767. Royal Arms of George III

The comical dark pink tiles are not from 1951, I am certain of it. The security camera is from the 2010s probably and I would like to see a blooper reel of footage from it.

Model of a Grain Storehouse, Eastern Han dynasty (A.D. 25–220), China

Burial models attest to the prevalence of multistoried buildings in early imperial China. This two-story structure, simply constructed of clay slabs, has a tile roof and an openwork balcony supported by brackets. Such realistic details are modified by imaginative "squatting-bear" feet. This model may depict a granary, or it may have been assembled with other clay structures to form a residential compound.

Pigsty and Latrines, Han dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220), 1st century B.C./A.D., China

Han grave goods extended to the most mundane aspects of rural life. As illustrated here, latrines were customarily built above a pigsty and connected by pipes to a cesspool. Stylistically, this well-constructed tomb object corresponds to models excavated in Huixian, Henan province.

Granary (Cang), Eastern Han dynasty (A.D. 25–220), China

As burial practices filtered down from the Han aristocracy to officials and landowners, tomb models related to farming, an honored occupation, became increasingly popular. The granary, used to store millet, barley, and wheat, was depicted either as a jar or as a small building. The two-story granary found in southern Chinese tombs of the Western Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 9) was a wood or ceramic model elevated on stilts. By the Eastern Han dynasty, this rectangular structure had spread to northern China and was raised on legs that were formed as crouching bears, a convention common to Han art. The inscription painted on the door of this granary states that it was made for the tomb of a local official.

Farm Shed with Grain Mill, Eastern Han dynasty (A.D. 25–220), China

This humble-looking burial model illustrates two notable inventions in engineering and architecture that were in used widely during the Han dynasty. The rotary mill, worked by a pedal-operated hammer, was used to prepare grain for flour. The shed that encloses it has a deeply overhanging tile roof supported by a wood column with projecting bracket arms. This type of bracketing, which transferred the weight of the roof to the column, became an increasingly important feature of later Chinese buildings.

Being a well-to-do housewife, Teth wears a pomander, a beautifully openworked 'apple' containing amber among the folds of her skirts to repel lice and mask odours. A pomander accentuated the refinement and elegance of the wearer. Moreover, the jewel also rang when the lady of the house walked about. Pomanders represented status, which is why she purposefully holds it up in the portrait.

This small (2 5/16 x 1 7/8 inches) and lovely masterpiece was made of boxwood in Holland around 1500-1530 by Adam Dircksz and workshop. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art website, a prayer nut, also known as a paternoster, was an object to hold in the palm during prayer and meditation. It was carved with openwork Gothic tracery with great refinement and delicacy. These prayer nuts became popular in the Netherlands around 1500-1530, and about 50 are known to survive.

This prayer nut was purchased from the J. H. Wade Fund, Accession Number 1961.87, and is in the public domain. The prayer nut can be seen at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 112, or can be viewed online at www.clevelandart.org/art/1961.87.
