Fretwork is an ornamental design in wood, typically openwork, done with a fretsaw. Once upon a time, it was used to decorate houses. Unfortunately, many older homes have removed the fretwork or allowed it to deteriorate. I like the look of the simple fretwork on this older house that stands at the edge of the Rotary Greenway Trail.

Bronze and iron openwork disks and spiral coil hair ornaments. Found in a grave in Incoronata, Pisticci. Messapic, 11th Century BC - 10th Century BC. Museo archeologico nazionale di Metaponto. Metaponto, Basilicata, Italy. Copyright 2016, James A. Glazier. Many of these design elements and ornaments wouldn't be out of place in Northern Germany or even Ireland of the same period. The spread and uniformity of early Iron age design is impressive.

I'm honestly not sure which to describe first, the sterling focal piece or the sapphire stone - I love them both so much.

So let's flip a coin and start with the genuine sapphire heart briolette, measuring just a generous 1/2" (12mm) wide. It is microfaceted using a unique checkerboard technique to accentuate its beauty and sparkle.

Built in 1896/97, the architect was Ewan Harper. His openwork spire is very much a local landmark and icon. Following the discovery of dry rot, the church closed for worship in 2009 when the congregation joined with the Parish Church of St Luke's to form a Local Ecumenical Partnership known as The Bridge Church. (See previous postings)

In 2014 the building was sold and is now subject to a planning application to demolish and replace it with a residential development. It is hoped that a campaign, led by the Victorian Society, will be able to save the tower and/or the spire.

35 Bloomberg Arts Interns gathered at Open Works to introduce themselves to their fellow interns and learn about what lies ahead in BAI 2018.

Hand-knitted set includes bright green sweater with an openwork pattern "leaves" & light yellow scarf. 2-pieces outfit fits Barbie girls.

Interns learned the importance of a good cover letter and professional email etiquette, then reflected on who they are through self portraits.

Fun facts about Peridot (August's birthstone): People in the Middle Ages wore peridot to gain foresight and divine inspiration. Legend has it that pirates favored peridot to protect them against evil. Some of Cleopatra's emeralds were in fact peridots.

It's easy to understand Peridot's long-praised value, with its refreshing green hue. For this piece I've snuggly wire wrapped a substantial 8x12mm A grade gem and then suspended it from a sterling silver openwork lotus charm. Strong sterling silver double cable chain unites the design, along with a lobster clasp.

St Peter's in Wallingford is distinguished by it's unusual openwork spire, an eccentric example of late 18th century gothic. The church itself dates mostly from the 1760s and replaces a medieval building destroyed during the siege of Wallingford in the Civil War.

The interior is spacious and attractive with a coffered ceiling over the nave. The focal point is the apse (rebuilt in the early 20th century) which has a 1918 window by Morris & Co at it's centre designed by John Henry Dearle in his characteristic, Burne Jones-influenced style.

The church was declared redundant in 1971 and is now vested in the Churches Conservation Trust. It is kept locked but a key can be obtained from the Tourist Information Office.
