This seventeenth century child’s high chair has a carved and turned walnut frame with caned backed panel and replacement upholstered seat panel. The chair is decorated with a carved crest rail of openwork with two cherubs embracing amid scrolled foliage. The banister-turned back posts are mounted with carved knob finials. The chair has scrolling armrests with baluster- turned arm supports. The base of the chair has ball-turned front legs and ring and baluster-turned side and raised front and back stretchers.
High chairs of this type would have allowed a child to sit at a dining table at the same height as adults or older children. Most armchairs of this type from the seventeenth-century would have a foot board under the seat attached to the front legs for the child to rest their feet on. The footboard could also have been adjusted and moved up and down the legs of the chair as the child grew. The plugs on the front leg of this high chair suggest that there would have been an adjustable footboard, but has since gone missing. The arm supports of the chair are pierced to take a guardrail which is also missing. Guardrails, however, were not an original feature to seventeenth century high chairs; the child instead would be kept in place by tying them to the chair around the waist or by pushing the chair up against the thick side of the table top. The pierced holes in this chair for a guardrail are most likely a later addition as the chair was passed down and used by later generations.
By the late seventeenth century, walnut and cane furniture with turned frames, like this high chair, became fashionable in London. A surge in the production of these chairs was galvanised by the destruction of property caused by the Great Fire of London in 1666. Walnut and cane furniture was easy to move around the home and affordable for both the aristocracy and merchants. Most walnut and cane furniture pieces were made through the collaboration of two separate makers; a ‘cane chair’ maker to construct the frame, and a ‘chair caner’ who would attach the cane through holes made in the furniture frame, weaving together the strips in into tight geometric patterns. The cane was made from flexible strips of split rattan plant from south-east Asia, imported to Europe by the East India Company. This chair is stamped on the leg with ‘EB’, probably a maker’s mark of the initials of one of the craftsmen who constructed this chair.

St Peter's in Wallingford is distinguished by it's unusual openwork spire, an eccentric example of late 18th century gothic. The church itself dates mostly from the 1760s and replaces a medieval building destroyed during the siege of Wallingford in the Civil War.
The interior is spacious and attractive with a coffered ceiling over the nave. The focal point is the apse (rebuilt in the early 20th century) which has a 1918 window by Morris & Co at it's centre designed by John Henry Dearle in his characteristic, Burne Jones-influenced style.
The church was declared redundant in 1971 and is now vested in the Churches Conservation Trust. It is kept locked but a key can be obtained from the Tourist Information Office.

While preparing for the (grand *lol*)opening of my Etsy store, I went a little bananas, and made 7 of these openwork crocheted hats for SD (8-9") sized heads.
They're all different, and I think they turned out quite well.

I need VCRs and CDs and a diamond ring that looks like the one pictured. I do not care about any of the other merchandise. Especially the guns, yuck!
Doesn't the picture of the ring resemble a clothes dryer on a pallet! I bet there's a 9-square grid of concrete openwork hidden underneath it.
