Other title: Piazza San Pietro (Vatican City)

Creator: Bernini, Gian Lorenzo, 1598-1680

Date: 1657-1667

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: Seen from the dome of St. Peter's, the pitched roof at lower center is that of the basilica's nave, flanked by two small, thin, domed lanterns serving two of the church's side chapels. The facade can be seen to be a thick, independent volume from the two projecting bays on either side, which were added later to support bell towers that were never completed. Beyond, the Via della Conciliazione leads from the Piazza to the Ponte Sant'Angelo.

Creator: Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475-1564

Date: 1563-1575

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Other title: Campidoglio (Rome, Italy); Capitoline Hill (Rome, Italy); Palazzo Nuovo (Rome, Italy)

Creator: Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475-1564

Date: 1644-1655

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: The Palazzo Nuovo was part of Michelangelo's original design for the Capitoline, but was only completed in 1654. This shallow but monumental structure mirrors both his new facade for the Palazzo dei Conservatori and its acute angle with respect to the Palazzo dei Senatori, turning the square's previously irregular plan into a coherent, enclosed trapezoid. The design of the upper opening of the central bay with its much broader broken triangular pediment is the only departure from Michelangelo's original design, in which all upper window frames were surrounded by identical broken segmental pediments. In the foreground is the Michelangelo-designed base for the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius (absent), and in the left background are barely visible the facade of S. Maria in Aracoeli and the Vittorio Emmanuele Monument.

Description of work: View of Campo de' Fiori. It owes its name to the "flowers field" present before the erection of the buildings in the 15th century. It became a place of execution during the Inquisition. Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for heresy in the piazza in 1600 and his statue now stands at its centre. Photo 1998

Other title: Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano; Piazza San Pietro (Vatican City)

Creator: Maderno, Carlo, 1556-1629; Bernini, Gian Lorenzo, 1598-1680

Date: 1607-1612 (facade)

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: The facade of St. Peter's was built by Carlo Maderno after the decision was made to add a nave to Michelangelo's centrally planned church in 1607. The design, a horizontal colonnade with pedimented central bay surmounted by an attic story, follows Michelangelo's design very closely, but the effect is completely different because his was meant for one wing of a centralized plan, in which the sides would recede behind the pedimented central portion. Maderno applied the same facade composition to a single broad wall, with only a slight projection of central pedimented bay. The last bay at either end of the facade (each with a tall, open arch) was supposed to support a bell tower, but Bernini's designs for these caused structural problems and they were removed in 1646, leaving a facade often criticized for its horizontality. The fact that the length of the nave causes the dome to "disappear" when viewed from the piazza is another consequence of the changes to Michelangelo's design.

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: The Temple of Vesta, Rome's Goddess of the Hearth was a round, Corinthian tholos in design and housed the eternal flame tended by the six Vestal Virgins. The portion visible today in the Forum Romanum was reconstructed in 1930 probably represents the ancient temple's final building in the 4th century.

Date: 1582-1605

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: This large sculpture depicts a reclining, bearded male figure, probably a River-god. The sculpture mounted on the wall above depicts a cardinal or pope. Most of the sculpture on the Capitoline is ancient, originally coming from the papal collection at the Lateran and given to Rome's city government in the Renaissance as a gesture of reconciliation.
