Other title: Piazza San Pietro (Vatican City)

Creator: Bernini, Gian Lorenzo, 1598-1680

Date: 1657-1667

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: View of the north "arm" of the colonnades at St. Peter's Square. The colonnade's terminating facade at right is designed as a simple pedimented temple front that reflects the cross-section: a broader, taller, barrel-vaulted central aisle between the two central columns, flanked by two lower, narrower side aisles. At this facade, the outer columns have been replaced by piers. To the left, the projecting bay marking the piazza's transverse axis is visible, as is the Vatican palace beyond and, at far left, a Christmas tree.

Other title: Campidoglio (Rome, Italy); Capitoline Hill (Rome, Italy); Palazzo Nuovo (Rome, Italy)

Creator: Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475-1564

Date: 1644-1655

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: The Palazzo Nuovo was part of Michelangelo's original design for the Capitoline, but was only completed in 1654. This shallow but monumental structure mirrors both his new facade for the Palazzo dei Conservatori and its acute angle with respect to the Palazzo dei Senatori, turning the square's previously irregular plan into a coherent, enclosed trapezoid. The design of the upper opening of the central bay with its much broader broken triangular pediment is the only departure from Michelangelo's original design, in which all upper window frames were surrounded by identical broken segmental pediments. The left end of the Palazzo dei Senatori is visible at right.

Title: Piazza Navona: Fountain of the Four Rivers

Other title: Fontana dei Fiumi

Creator: Bernini, Gian Lorenzo, 1598-1680

Creator role: Architect

Date: 1647-1651

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: The central fountain in Piazza Novona is considered one of Bernini's masterpieces. The fountain took four years to complete with the actual carving done by assistants to Bernini. The four sculptures personify the main rivers of the four continents known at that time: The Danube is Europe, The Nile is Africa (which appears with a veiled head to indicate that its source was still unknown at that time), the Ganges is Asia and Rio represents the Americas. Funds to build the fountain were raised by an unpopular tax on bread. The obelisk was moved from the Circo di Massenzio on the Via Appia Antico. It is interesting to note that Bernini was not asked to submit a design for the fountain as the Pope reproached him for his close connection with his predecessor Urbanus VIII and for the technical failure of his attempt to erect the bell towers on St Peter's. However, Bernini found a way to have his model of the fountain seen by the Pope and he immediately got the commission. The rivalry between Bernini and Borromini is usually mentioned to explain the pose of the figure of the Nile who apparently cringes at the sight of the church of Sant'Agnese built by Borromini adjacent to the fountain. Seven beasts linked to the four rivers populate the fountain and add life to it.

Other title: Campidoglio (Rome, Italy); Capitoline Hill (Rome, Italy)

Creator: Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475-1564

Date: Designed 1538; 1644-1655 (Palazzo Nuovo)

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: The two-step difference between the main "oval" of the Campidoglio and the surrounding buildings can be seen near the travertine facade of the Palazzo Nuovo. The squared-off bases for the building's colossal order pilasters contrast with the much smaller Ionic columns that frame each bay, providing a more "human" scale.

Date: early 4th c.

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: Also called the Arch of Maxentius, this arch was built around the reign of Constantine in the Forum Boarium. The four-sided design honored Janus, the two-headed god of passages. Its many niches held statues of pagan gods until they were banned shortly after its construction. Today it stands at the center of the Piazza della Bocca della Verita', in front of the church of S. Giorgio in Velabro, visible in the right background.

Other title: Temple of Mars Ultor (Rome, Italy)

Date: 2

Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy

Description of work: The flight of steps at right led up to the Temple of Mars Ultor (Mars the Avenger), whose facade column fragments are visible. The temple was built after Augustus' victory over the murderers of his uncle Julius Caesar in 42 B.C. The temple was dedicated in AD 2. Built on a raised podium against the back wall of the Forum of Augustus, it was constructed of bright white Carrara marble and used the ornate Corinthian order and thereby combined traditional Roman temple design with Hellenistic material and visual splendor.

L'équipe investit peu à peu ses nouveaux locaux. De la lumière, de l'espace, des couleurs et des plantes. Green non ?

Dedicated on May 2, 1997 by President Bill Clinton, the monument, spread over 7.5 acres (30,000 m2), traces 12 years of the history of the United States through a sequence of four outdoor rooms, one for each of FDR's terms of office. Sculptures inspired by photographs depict the 32nd president alongside his dog Fala. Other sculptures depict scenes from the Great Depression, such as listening to a fireside chat on the radio and waiting in a bread line,a bronze sculpture by George Segal. A bronze statue of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt standing before the United Nations emblem honors her dedication to the UN. It is the only presidential memorial to depict a First Lady. - Wikipedia... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Delano_Roosevelt_Memorial

Description of work: Seen from the dome of St. Peter's, the pitched roof at lower center is that of the basilica's nave, flanked by two small, thin, domed lanterns serving two of the church's side chapels.

In the foreground is the Michelangelo-designed base for the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius (absent), and in the left background are barely visible the facade of S. Maria in Aracoeli and the Vittorio Emmanuele Monument.
