Other title: Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano; Piazza San Pietro (Vatican City)
Creator: Maderno, Carlo, 1556-1629; Bernini, Gian Lorenzo, 1598-1680
Date: 1607-1612 (facade)
Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy
Description of work: The facade of St. Peter's was built by Carlo Maderno after the decision was made to add a nave to Michelangelo's centrally planned church in 1607. The design, a horizontal colonnade with pedimented central bay surmounted by an attic story, follows Michelangelo's design very closely, but the effect is completely different because his was meant for one wing of a centralized plan, in which the sides would recede behind the pedimented central portion. Maderno applied the same facade composition to a single broad wall, with only a slight projection of central pedimented bay. The last bay at either end of the facade (each with a tall, open arch) was supposed to support a bell tower, but Bernini's designs for these caused structural problems and they were removed in 1646, leaving a facade often criticized for its horizontality. The fact that the length of the nave causes the dome to "disappear" when viewed from the piazza is another consequence of the changes to Michelangelo's design.

Other title: Tempio di Saturno
Date: 497 BC (first built); 4th c. AD (last rebuilding)
Current location: Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy
Description of work: Saturn was one of the most popular gods in Rome, and his temple in the Forum Romanum was first dedicated in 497 B.C. The 8 standing columns and architrave visible today date to the rebuilding of the 4th c. AD. The mismatched columns are probably spolia, or "recycled" from more ancient monuments. At far left is the back side of the Palazzo dei Senatori, with one of the arches from the ancient Tabularium visible in its base. Three standing columns from the Temple of Vespasian are at left. At right, the Arch of Septimus Severus (under scaffolding) and the dome of SS. Luca e Martino is seen beyond.
