Description of work: Campo de' Fiori owes its name to the "flowers field" present before the erection of the buildings in the 15th century. It became a place of execution during the Inquisition. Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for heresy in the piazza in 1600 and his statue now stands at its centre.

It was placed here in 1786 to link the church and the stairway The facade of the Church of S. Trinita' dei Monti stands at right.

Description of work: The steps leading from the foreground are those of the Basilica Julia, with the three standing columns of the Temple of Castor and Pollux visible at right. At center, in distance, is the small, round Temple of Vesta. At left is the 7th-century Column of Phocas, and the church of S. Lorenzo in Miranda (built within the ruins of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina) beyond. The campanile in the far distance belongs to the church of S. Francesca Romana.

Outta my way slowpoke. He's only going 55-60 MPH. I'm going about 65-70 MPH.

Description of work: View of the over-life size statue of a nude man found on the site known today as the Forum of the Heroic Statue in 1927. The Forum of the Heroic Statue was built in the mid-4th c. on the site of a Hadrianic-era bath. Description of work: Fed by the Acqua Felice and the Acqua Paola, the Fontana delle Tartarughe ("Fountain of the Tortoises") was designed by architect Giacomo della Porta from 1581-1584, with the bronze figures of youths added by Taddeo Landini in 1589. They were originally designed to hold up dolphins, and the small tortoises seen today were added when the fountain was restored by Bernini in 1658.

This area was its city center, an open space that housed and connected the city's main commercial, political, and religious functions. It was surrounded by a two-story portico, with a Doric lower story (portions of which are seen reconstructed at right) and an Ionic upper story.

Description of work: From the top of the Cordonata Steps, the view is directed towards Rome's medieval center. The Capitoline Hill had opened east, towards the Forum, in ancient Rome, but when Michelangelo designed this grand flight of steps for the triumphal entry of Emperor Charles V in 1536, this turned the focus of the piazza to the west.
