After risking his neck in a high speed dive, this Common Tern almost loses the catch..

This little nuthatch drops a sunflower seed. That's OK, he'll just grab another. :)

It was pointed out to me yesterday that I was misspelling Wellband Creek Park. It is Willband Creek Park. I did it over 170 times; a big oops!

I think I managed to correct them all.

This is the third cheesecake I've ever made, and it turned out the ugliest. It was supposed to be blueberry swirl. Reflecting my artistic mastery level, it looks like it was decorated by a third grader. I also let it cook a little too long and it developed some cracking in spite of the water bath. Oh well, it was delicous anyway.

Sandhill Crane Festival, Monte Vista, CO - I found this special moment while reviewing some older shots from this Spring's Sandhill Crane Festival in the San Luis Valley. It appears that one of the cranes got its flight plan mixed up and fell in with some Canada Geese. This sort of thing didn't happen often, the birds were amazingly good at staying within their own ranks despite there being thousands of birds coming and going from these feeding grounds ...

Alright Stanley, we have a problem. I made another unauthorized purchase. You know what I need you to do. Now hold your breathe, but keep your eyes open. If at any time you feel scared or in danger, use the safe phrase, "Pigs in a blanket never get cold". If you feel short on time just yell, "toot toot." Either way, don't show your face or your foot or paw until you have it all because this little piggy ain't going no where until he is cleaned out.

Something went terribly wrong as the LA&L was switching Kraft in Avon, NY on November 21, 2024. Looks like the rear truck on 426 spread the rail, resulting in it and 4 cars hitting the dirt. No one noticed the 426 was off the rail until it rode over the crossing and then slammed down onto the ground after it got clear of it. I was standing near the crossing and did not hear anything unusual until 426 hit the ground past the crossing.

I was uploading some old pictures of mine from the early 80's and accidentally didn't select private.

I was in the Coast Guard at the time. Our ship had just completed NATO exercises in the North Atlantic and we spent a couple of weeks going to various ports. Had two days off at each port. One third of the crew had to be onboard while in port in case of fire or other emergencies. Went to London, Edinburgh, A Coruña Spain, Hamburg and West Berlin Germany, and Paris. Actually went to Europe twice on two different NATO exercises. Also went on an Arctic trip on the Polar Star icebreaker. But most of my time in the Coast Guard was spent in the Caribbean and NYC since our home port was Governors Island.

About the picture, the Louvre was amazing, but honestly I was a bit underwhelmed by the Mona Lisa, kinda small and set back behind glass. Notice the object many of the people are holding to their ear. It was for people to hear about the various paintings quietly so as to keep the museum's atmosphere quiet and perhaps reverent. So many people going through and guides talking to crowds things could have gotten very loud otherwise.

I wonder how the do it today?

There are a few superstitions concerning stepping on cracks in the pavement. It was once common to tell children that if they stepped on any cracks in the pavement they would be eaten for lunch by bears waiting for them around the corner.

There is also a belief that the cracks in the pavement lead directly to the underworld. So if you stepped on them, demons from there would be released and bring you bad luck.
