A special visitor to the north, CN’s DGRMS track evaluation train is seen deadheading south to North Bay with Ontario Northland SD40-2 1733 leading. At North Bay, the crew would set off 1733 at the shop and head north with CN 5604 leading, scanning as far as Temagami before tying down in the siding and continuing to Englehart the next day.

Just after sunrise Ontario Northland southbound manifest 113 cruises past an old signal. When I got to Englehart about 20 minutes earlier I saw a power set from the previous night was missing so I headed back south and was fortunate to see them just a few miles later.

ONR SD40 No. 1737 and GP38-2 No. 1805 (GMD 1974 and 1982) power the daily Dofasco ore train, photographed southbound at Adams Jct., Ont., June 23, 1984. Train was a familiar sight for over 20 years as it made its way over the ONR and CNR to the steel mill at Hamilton, Ont. The Adams Mine in northern Ontario was to be closed in 1990 due to the depressed steel market and an end to the ore train was expected to follow. (Doug Wilson)

On our latest trip into the northern Ontario wilderness, myself and Steve opted to try and catch a few of Ontario Northland's regional freights out of Englehart.
A late drive up the night before allowed us to be in position for the arrival of 207 at the Glencore mine early the next morning. After making their setoff at Kidd Yard for the Glencore switchers to pick up, they continued west towards the end of track with a small cut of tank cars for Air Liquide in Hallnor. After setting off the inbound cars and doing some re-spotting on the plant's west side, the crew is seen lifting their outbound cars from the east side, having switched ends in preparation for their southbound departure from Kidd after this.

ONR Welcomes New Research Ship to Navy’s Ranks
ARLINGTON, Va.—In honor of the first American female astronaut, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) recently welcomed the U.S. Navy’s newest research vessel—R/V Sally Ride—for ocean science.
The Navy’s Superintendent of Shipbuilding received the ship from the Dakota Creek Industries shipyard in Anacortes, Washington, and ONR delivered it to officials from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scripps will operate and maintain the Sally Ride under a charter lease agreement with ONR, which manages the ship on behalf of the Navy.
“The Navy plays a major role in supporting the national research fleet by delivering cutting-edge research vessels like the Sally Ride,” said Dr. Frank Herr, head of ONR’s Ocean Battlespace Sensing Department. “The Sally Ride is a next-generation research ship that’s sure to make new maritime discoveries and scientific breakthroughs, and contribute to the Navy’s overall mission.”
The Sally Ride takes the place of the recently retired R/V Melville, which Scripps—one of the world’s foremost centers for ocean, atmosphere and Earth science research—operated from 1969 to 2014.

The Neil Armstrong-class of research vessels are modern research vessels based on a commercial design, capable of integrated, interdisciplinary, general purpose oceanographic research in coastal and deep ocean areas. The Neil Armstrong-class will feature a modern suite of oceanographic equipment, state of the art acoustic equipment capable of mapping the deepest parts of the oceans, advanced over-the-side handling gear to deploy and retrieve scientific instruments, emissions controls for stack gasses, and new information technology tools both for monitoring shipboard systems and for communicating with land-based sites worldwide. Enhanced modular onboard laboratories and extensive science payload capacity will provide the ships with the flexibility to meet a wide variety of oceanographic research challenges in the coming decades.
U.S. Navy research vessels being built at Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes will be named after Neil Armstrong & Sally Ride
