ONR 2105 leads 414 back to Englehart after staying an extra night in Cochrane.

Usually this train heads to Cochrane and returns the next day but a CN train running late caused a snowball effect and delayed almost all of the ONRs operations.

The crisp and still October air lets the sounds of 3 EMD's echo off the landscape. Skirting along Lac Hert as they luminate the fall colours under a bright moon.

ONR Extra Train 999 (running under the ID CN P30031 19) is on extremely rare mileage for any sort of ONR equipment as it makes it's way westbound on the CN Halton Sub bound for Port Colborne, where it will act as a prop in the filming of "The Handmaid's Tale".

ONT 211 heads to east Rouyn-Noranda, QC alongside highway 117 which would be a very helpful road for the chase into the city in which they will work

Seeing as I spent 99% or my time in the Sudbury area in search of BIGs on CP and more rarely CN I seldom made it over to North Bay to check out the ONR. One of my rare visits there did net this passenger job at the depot with 1984. In retrospect I probably should have made more of an effort but you can't be everywhere. May 16, 1988.

Rails and codeline wire shimmer in the glow of Canadian National GP38-2W 4791’s headlights as it curves through Cobalt, Ont., on a gloomy autumn evening on the Ontario Northland Railway. After traversing multiple subdivisions across Canadian National’s network in northern Quebec earlier in the week, the train was now testing ONR’s entire system before eventually returning back to the CN at Hearst.

After finishing up with the movie shoot in Port Colborne, ONT 1802 North slowly trundles through Bracebridge passing the falls.

On July 13 2022, CN P300 with ONT 1802 traveling westbound was seen on a bridge east of Georgetown. It was the first time an Ontario Northland Railway train is seen on the CN Halton Subdivision, en route to St. Catherine for a movie filming event.

Well, this week was a great week to be a Canadian; experiencing an ONR trip in northern Ontario for the first time and Canada winning the 4 Nations Face-Off championship. The drive up north really makes you to open your eyes to the beautiful Canadian shield, totally taking away the fact that it was a 9 hour drive to get here in the first place. I knew I had to take advantage of these amazing rock cuts that you cant definitely get in Windsor. Here is ONR 308 returning back to Englehart with a beautifully painted ON Rail SD75i at Boston Creek road.

After missing 214s run, we decided to head north to try and find ONR 308 coming back from Timmins. Without any clue where the train was at, we decided to keep heading north from Swastika, putting a snow pile on the track to know if we have missed the train. After almost heading up to Ramore, we decided to turn back south in case we have missed it. But as soon as we did, we seen the headlights down the tracks and to my luck, it was a beauty painted ON Rail SD75i taking the lead of it. Going to the next spot i could beside the road, I quickly climbed up the huge snow embankment to grab the shot, even if that meant failing into the snow to get the shot....

The ONR Handmaids Tale Special has now entered the Trillium Trackage near Jordan and parallels the Welland Canal.

Under fittingly grey skies on a somber Canada Day, the sound of EMDs working hard fills the muggy northern air as ONR 1740 comes roaring around the bend with train no. 113 for Englehart. The lead locomotive, of CP and KCS lineage, was acquired by ONR in 2020 and was extensively rebuilt at the North Bay shops before being pressed into road service. To my knowledge, this was the 1740’s maiden voyage north leading and while she ain’t pretty, she gets the job done.

With the unveiling of Ontario Northland's Heritage SD40-2, I went looking for a vintage ONR shot. While there are good memories of 3 day Holiday weekends with a young Cleveland crew, the shots show that we had some real challenging weather. For this one the high-sun hazy sky sort of cooperated but the weather wasn't the biggest challenge. It was unseasonably warm and humid and the black flies were out in force. You all know that if you let them bother you, it can drive you crazy, and some of us were going in circles since the car was too far away to get a shot with the warning we would have This is a southbound train almost home just about where the railroad joins Trout Lake Rd for the rest of the way into North Bay. Power is 2 of the SD40-2's in their as-delivered paint, like the #1730 that was unveiled recently. May 28, 1979.

The "Northlander" heads south for Toronto behind a Cat-repowered F-unit. And yes they were hauling ass!

Ontario Northlands daily Englehart to North Bay road freight rolls through the heart of Temagami Ontario on their way South. GRS searchlights which used to guard the South end of the siding here sit dormant awaiting their eventual removal. To the right of the frame a mast still stands which used to hold a semaphore as well as the 1907 build station which no longer see's passenger service.

Although this spot might has become a cliché, it is still an amazing one. So ONR train 214 is seen leaving Englehart enroute for North Bay on a beautiful fall day.

ONR 113 roars back north with a mix of painted and patched units and a 39 car train in tow for Englehart

An order to EMD for SD75s prompted a trip to get Ontario Northland's SD40-2s before their demise. Here is Englehart to Cochrane train 213 passing the still used passenger station at Matheson. At the time of this photo the 6 day a week Northlander passenger train operated between Cochrane and Toronto. Our fears for the SD40s proved to be unwarranted as most of them are still running on the ONR. One has even been repainted in a heritage scheme.

MDRY 8250, still wearing the paint of the defunct Midland Railway, trails on the end of this passenger run on Rock Island's new subsidiary Ottawa Northern. The train consisted of Midland Railway's former primary power, MDRY GP20 4079 (formerly SP 7229) in the lead and MDRY GP10 8250 (formerly IC 9250) trailing on the rear. The Santa Rocket slowly made its debut run on the former-ATSF rail line between Baldwin City, Kansas, and Norwood, Kansas and back during the first snowstorm of the cold season.
