With CN struggling to keep up with clearing a record snow load in the Muskoka and surrounding areas, they called ONR to lend a helping hand to plow the areas north of Huntsville on the Newmarket Sub. It had been days since any interchange of traffic had taken place in North Bay, so it was in both railways best interest to get it done as soon as possible, in an unusual move to say the least. Here they're seen cruising through Scotia with the snow still blanketing everything in sight.

The Ontario Northland provided a variety of transportation services for the province. they had buses, trucks, and of course trains. I was riding this day with a group of non railfan friends and had come in from Cochrane on the bus to transfer onto the train from Timmins to get down to North Bay. The ONR bought 4 Trans Europe Express trainsets in 1977. This one was wrecked in 1989 and scrapped. The location is Porquis Jct where the line from Timmons joined with the line from Cochrane to go south to North Bay July 28, 1979

The ONR provided the only ground access to the northern community of Moosonee, ON. In the summer the nearest road is 90 miles away. (Some winters there is an ice road). This is the modest facility at the far north end of the RR. Before moving to Texas in 1979, I rode some trains around Ontario with friends from work (not railfans), including the the Polar Bear Express pictured here. After riding the train north from Cochrane and being in Moosonee for a few hours, we concluded there isn't much reason to go there. But on the way back we found the reason is to ride in the baggage car on the way back. They pushed back any cargo, drug out the player piano, and opened the coolers. What a ride to be bouncing around, partying across northern Ontario in a light weight baggage car at the rear of the Polar Bear Express that was making track speed of 50mph (or so the engineer tried to claim) July 27, 1979

A special visitor to the north, CN’s DGRMS track evaluation train is seen deadheading south to North Bay with Ontario Northland SD40-2 1733 leading. At North Bay, the crew would set off 1733 at the shop and head north with CN 5604 leading, scanning as far as Temagami before tying down in the siding and continuing to Englehart the next day.
