Can colleges and universities effectively pursue massive online learning while maintaining their core academic missions? Issues surrounding the quality of courses, their cost effectiveness, student learning outcomes, credentialing, and equal access to education have provoked a spirited and evolving international debate. Penn President Amy Gutmann moderated the 2013 David and Lyn Silfen University Forum, welcoming New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning Columnist Thomas Friedman, The Honorable Martha J. Walden University celebrated the graduation of more than 3,500 students from 19 countries—including the first graduates of the Walden University/Universidad del Valle de México (UVM) Bachelor of Science Dual Degree Program—in Minneapolis on Saturday, July 26, 2008. Rt. Hon. Lord Mark Malloch-Brown, Britain’s Minister of State for Africa, Asia and the U.N. in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, and also a former deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, gave the commencement address.

Thanks to course management systems, students who cannot devote the time to traditional classroom learning can earn their degree online.

Capitalizing on the popularity of the craft brewing phenomenon to teach science, Oklahoma State University is offering an interactive online learning course this fall to explain microbiology through the practical application of micro brewing.

The course, Brewing Microbiology, is open to OSU students for credit, and is available for free to anyone around the world with Internet access as a MOOC (Massisve Open Online Course).

The craft and business of microbrewing has exploded in the last decade. In 2015 the number of operating breweries in the U.S. grew 15 percent to a record 4,269. Small and independent breweries account for 99 percent of the breweries in operation.

Brewing Microbiology fulfills three credit hours of upper division science for OSU students and there are no prerequisites, though high school or freshman level biology and chemistry is suggested. Enrollment is open now through August 22.

Dr. Tyrrell Conway, professor and department head of microbiology and molecular genetics at OSU, will teach the course. He will take students through the biology of grain, biochemistry of malted barley, chemistry of water, preservative nature of hops, the human physiology of taste and smell, and the microbiology of yeast.

Conway points out that the course is about the science behind the process of microbrewing, not about the brewing technique.

Lectures will be delivered on location from inside a lab, outside in grain fields, and through a tour of Stillwater’s Iron Monk Brewing Company, which is owned and operated by OSU alumni Dave Monks and Jerod Millirons.

Production of the course was a collaborative effort involving various programs on campus, specifically Arts & Sciences Outreach and ITLE (Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellent).

To enroll or learn more, visit asoutreach.okstate.edu/students/online/brew or call the Arts & Science Outreach office at (405) 744-5647.

Kyryll Paskov, who, with his family moved from Luhansk to Kharkiv in 2014 and to Rivne after the full-scale invasion, lights candles during a power outage at their current home in Rivne, Ukraine.

Eleven months into the Russian war in Ukraine, recent attacks targeting civilian infrastructure have further complicated access to education. Families displaced from the conflict zone have switched to online learning, which is now disrupted by lack of access to power, internet access, and other basic utilities. Airborne attacks across the country mean that lessons are halted and students move underground for their protection on a daily basis.

The vision of an isolated online learner is one I strive to avoid. This is the result of bad learning design that places emphasis on content, rather than the human trying to learn with it. Online learning should not create this feeling. Learning is social, situated within a context, and so both these factors can be brought into the design of learning to avoid isolation.

On this sunny and warmer-than-normal Saturday in the Valley of the Sun, 20 Western International University (WIU) staff members wearing t-shirts emblazoned with "WIU Gives Back" literally gave their backs over to heavy-duty construction work on a Habitat For Humanity home project sponsored by sister school University of Phoenix. The WIU volunteers worked alongside future homeowner Michelle Solano, her grandmother Mary Solano, and Habitat volunteer construction professionals to continue interior framing and roofing work on the home that Solano will be able to purchase for herself and her three young children.
