Thanks to my friend Greg I was able to get hired on the spot to cover this event minutes before it was supposed to begin.
Djerba, an island off the southeastern coast of Tunisia, is home to one of North Africa's only thriving (albeit small) Jewish communities. Roughly 1200 Jews live there, running Jewish schools, synagogues, and Kosher restaurants. Here, friends and family gather around bride Oshrit Uzan on her wedding night in Zarzis.

I know this style doesn't work for everyone - Megan! - but I happen to be quite fond of the things that come out of my uncertain period. Initially I wanted a few sharp frames, but that proved difficult to accomplishing from a bus taking a ramp at 75 miles an hour. I like this better, especially the little angel dancing in the lower left of the frame. I really wanted this one to end up in the magazine. Didn't happen.
I was lucky to have Jahrensy and Damian along for the ride on this NYC adventure. See what they have to say about it.

Alit Sabban (pictured) and Hanna Sabban plan on turning this rundown building into a new school for their students — the two currently run a primary school for girls in a series of disconnected, borrowed spaces (one is a residential garage) and badly need a new home.

I did a lot of panning in NYC, much to the chagrin of Megan and Damian. Panning is one of those techniques that takes time and patience. Asking people to stand on a street corner in frigid December temperatures is asking a lot, even if I was supposed to be working.
