Guilty as charged!
Right in front of my nose, huge buildings, occupied by hundreds of families.
Downtown San Paulo, Brazil.
Few blocks from the City Hall, the Stock Exchange, the Central Bank among so many other fundamental, worthy and basic institutions.
In just one of the buildings, 475 families occupies 27 unfinished floors.
Kids play and run.
Clotheslines on the outside of the building, without any protection from falling down and in front of the entire city.
Windows, with breathtaking views, of one of the biggest and most populated cities on the Planet, made of compensated wood or sticks, even at the 27th floor.
People that use strength and organization to impose their reality, to a society that doesn’t care to listen.
Guilty as charged!

One of my favourite assignments from the year so far; spending an afternoon with an absolute legend, the fabulous Marco Pierre White. A fantastic assignment for the Irish Independent, which made the cover and two double page spreads in the magazine. Thanks Marco for such an unforgettable afternoon!

Just before the very start of the pandemic, in late January and early February of 2020, I travelled to Haterumajima. Japan's southernmost island. Just a few hundred kilometres from Taiwan. I was there to film an episode of 'Journeys in Japan', the travel/photography/history programme I present for NHKWorld.
All of the shots I take for the programme are shot in the Hasselblad XPan aspect, roughly 2.70:1
It fits nicely into the 16x9 TV screen and the directors like it. I like it, too.
This lady I met as she came out the shop carrying some heavy boxes. I offered to help her and the director ended up following me to the lady's house and filming. he was lovely. We sat, had a chat and she gave me some local sugar. She was 90 years old and her birthday was two days before mine. A wonderful interaction you can see in the programme.
You can see the full TV episode here:

This shooting was seriously fun. Never tried to shoot animals in action before when a friend asked me to take pictures of her dogs. So I tried and some images like this one turned out lovely. It was freezing here in Germany. However, the scenery in my home town was quite nice and I enjoyed it quite a lot :)
This was shot as part of my commission from Haneda Airport, to shoot pictures for a big screen in the new international terminal that opened the following year. Model: Miyu
aka My birthday document -- crashing at an anonymous hotel, alone, to extract myself from the things and people that I see every day -- actually had a bit of a crisis, and this is consistent m.o. for me, to go off to myself for quiet analysis, et all
, plus to avoid worrying and thus dragging others into my wakng nightmare -- worked, with tremendous help from my beautiful niece and her amazing family (turns out, I can be wrong -+ it is possible to receive help without harming others psychologically via exposure to aspects of my psychological issues, shall we say.
..- I had the pleasure of really spending time with Juan, her husband, which I suppose means my Nephew-In-Law, and it's heartening that she met and married a truly good man, good person, a gentle warrior who's just returned from overseas deployment. The kids are amazing! Have known them all their lives, and it's been a real pleasure to enjoy talks, at each of their stages, as they've grown up, witnessing their rapid evolution in terms of awareness of their world, and their degree of interest with regard to interaction, and a nascent philosophy about it all, et al. I'm rambling, a bit, but even though it started in the ER, and involved the previously mentioned crisis, not to mention the grief without end for my parents, and more, it was perhaps the best birthday of my life,. Out of chaos, very simplistically, sometimes clarity of a sort emerges. M & E, my niece's beautiful daughters, entertained me, sensing something akin to depression. Very young, but so talented and intelligent and capable of tremendous empathy. Although E's been prophesized to one day be an assassin, I'll skip that for now. My Mom once told her, however: "We'll still love you anyway." Too many family members unable to discuss their work. Makes sense, actually. She's emulating, in a sense. Sweet. ;-}. Although I've been a vegetarian many times over the course of my life, I do eat meat occasionally, and Juan gave us all the gift of his first batch of Brisket. Remember, this is Texas! Most first attempts are probably flawed, plagued with grievous errors at one or more stages. Juan's, however, was perfect. Seriously. I've been to a place accused of serving the best BBQ in Texas (pictures of celebs and politicians from here on the wall autographed), but Juan's.first try won out,in everyone's opinion. BTW, when he saw the ragged headphones pictured, asked me to retire them, giving me his personal JBLs, gear that accompanied him in Iraq. so many moments like that throughout.
ok. I'm not social/don't play well with others. Not a choice. Doctors inform that I was born this way. Atypically language. High IQ. Tedious and bizarre at times socially, et al. My Mom always told me how important family is, and how they will try to understand you (oddball me), and are accepting. As always, she was right. Certain eeopleople that form a sort of Flickr family, too...... and old friends who write letters and check on me, regardless of whether or not I reciprocate. I realize how fortunate I am that such people at different moments over the years have entered my life, and I want/need to seize a moment to simply say thank you. Salud. 8^)
