Wildlife photography is about more than just the animals — it’s also about the journeys, the long days in the wild, and the people working to protect nature. This moment, captured with my UggeTheExplorer flag in the Maasai Mara, is a reminder of why I travel: to document, to share, and to inspire appreciation for the natural world.
Djerba, an island off the southeastern coast of Tunisia, is home to one of North Africa's only thriving (albeit small) Jewish communities. Roughly 1200 Jews live there, running Jewish schools, synagogues, and Kosher restaurants. Here, three generations of jewelers sit in their synagogue — Michael Mamou, his father Youssef Mamou, and his grandfather TKTKTK Mamou, who all run the family store in Houmt Souk.

An estimated 15 million devotees and tourists joined the annual "traslacion" or the procession of the Black Nazarene. The event commemorates the "translacion" or the moving of the image solemnly to the minor basilica.
Devotees are determined to touch, wipe and hold the image of the Black Nazarene because of their deep belief and devotion to the image. Even if the devotees are used to crossing the old route, they followed the new, prescribed route in the end. Like most of the incidents in the past years, there were a number of incidents of suffocation, minor injuries, cuts and bruises--a far cry from what should be a solemn, holy event. —

Many of the Jewish men in Djerba have traditionally worked as jewelers or metalsmiths — this workshop is owned by a Djerban Jew.
