We went for a walk near Mas de Barberans- it was a mild and sunny day- great day for a picnic.

olive trees = God's people
Olive trees also happen to be the slowest growing tree in Israel.
In Bible times, the olive oil was as important a product as petrol oil is today. Israel was blessed with some of the best olive oil in the world... but that is also why the Romans killed so many olive trees-- they wanted to destroy Israel.
Because of the way that olive trees are ruthlessly pruned through their life they frequently end up in odd shapes and with beautiful (to me) expanses of dead or nearly dead wood that is then weathered to add extra character. Here is an example from trees near Mouans Sartoux station.
My guess is that these trees are about 100 years old (give or take 20 years) and despite now being surrounded by litter, grafitti and tarmac somehow they still evoke the timelessness of the traditional life in the country.

This olive tree in Cambridge holds the record for most northerly olive tree I have yet seen at (according to Wikipedia) 52° 12' 29" or 34" according to my actual google map picture (see here). Admittedly it is in a pot and they probably take it in on frosty nights but it is about 9° (or 1000 km) further north than the Riviera which is already at the northern end of the normal olive habitat. By the way it is worth pointing out that (thanks to the Gulf Stream, I guess) temperate latitudes in Europe are far further north than they are in the Americas or East Asia. The Riviera is slightly further north than Boston and about the same latitude as Vladivostok while Goose Bay in Canada, at just over 53° north, is just about 80 miles (130km) more northerly than Cambridge.
Sorry, I was busy yesterday. I intended to upload this photo taken precisely 2 years ago so here it is 2 years and one day old

I'm in dull Blighty all tomorrow and probably won't have any Internet access so I figure I'll post this now instead.
The mimosas are out in force and I do love the Olive/mimosa contrast such as this image taken in hills around Tanneron last weekend.
PS many mimosa pics in the archives of my Fotolog and others from last weekend's Riviera H3 outing
