Small town urban garden outdoor living room Design: Charlotte Rowe

I'm in dull Blighty all tomorrow and probably won't have any Internet access so I figure I'll post this now instead.

The mimosas are out in force and I do love the Olive/mimosa contrast such as this image taken in hills around Tanneron last weekend.

PS many mimosa pics in the archives of my Fotolog and others from last weekend's Riviera H3 outing

A group of olive trees on Samos, Greece

Roof terrace with olive trees and timber decking

One of many olive groves near Covalta Canyon. Notice the twisted trunks of the trees caused by the strong and frequent winds from the mountains.

Tortosa, Cataluña, España

There are so many wonderful ancient Olive trees on the island.

This small ermita dates back to the 15th century and is located on a road from the coast to Tortosa, on the Santiago trail from the Mediterranean coast to Zaragossa. It sits at the top of the pass and the view is amazing: on one side the coast and the sea, on the other side the Ebro valley and the Ports.

Pennisetum and clear stemmed olive trees and outdoor furniture

I was told the ancient olive tree is more than 500 years old.

An odd one this. Some branches have recently died off, while others right next door to them are flourishing with new shoots. You can see this in this close up photo where there are some lighter green leaves here and there. At first I thought this was merely an example of botched pruning where the pruner had left a few of the cut branches in the tree but that does not appear to be the case as the dead bits are clearly attached to the rest of the tree. Since I go past this young tree quite frequently on my way into the village to buy bread I'll see what happens over the next few months.

These trees are probably over 500 years old-

the exact date is difficult to determine without core samples- the trunks of the trees are so gnarled and twisted-

or cutting down the tree and count the rings...

We spent the day hiking in the mountains above Tortosa. It was sunny and hazy, but warm.

cool spot to park

one of the ancient olivetrees along a hiking trail near Ulldecona. The trees are private property and some were planted over one thousand years ago, they still bear fruit. Liane, our Swiss visitor is admiring the beautiful bark of the tree.

There is something mysterious about a tree this old.

From a bit higher up the hill ..... the trees here are Olive trees ...
