We had a very close call a couple of weeks ago when we nearly lost her: happily she now seems to be back to her old self, albeit with two shaved patches where the vet had to drain a lot of fluid on her chest. There are all sorts of possible reasons for that, most of them sinister, but it looks as though it was the usual old-cat heart problems, which is probably the most easily controlled cause.
Update 24 July 2009: Humbug was doing very well, and had apparently made a good recovery from the problems; our vet was pleased with her progress. Sadly, this morning when we went in to make first cuppa of the day, we found her laid out on the kitchen table, peaceful but quite dead. Nothing around her was disturbed, so we think she must have gone in her sleep.
TWENTY YEARS OLD. If he was my actual child instead of a cat he'd be a sophomore in college. Cheers, Egypt!
Miz McDuffy in her new kitty bed, January 16, 2009
I adopted Miz McDuffy from the Cocheco Valley Humane Society after Siobhan's 22 year old cat Sassafras passed away. The house was too quiet so we decided to adopt a new kitty.
I wanted to give an and older cat a chance; Miz McDuffy was the first cat I saw. She was three and half years old and so sweet I just had to adopt her. Siobhan thought I just wanted to get a cat and go home. She suggested that maybe we should check out a couple more shelters. We saw some great cats but I kept thinking about Miz McDuffy. Finally, I suggested we go back to Cocheco Valley for another look. What I meant to say was I wanted to adopt that cute little Manx kitty I saw on the first day of searching for a new pet.
On our first visit to Cocheco Valley they had more cats than they could handle. A week later, most of the cages were empty. My heart sank because I thought they may have euthanized Miz McDuffy to make room for incoming cats. I asked one of the volunteers if they still had the little Manx. She said "Yes, we moved her to a quiet cage in the corner." That was it; Duffy was coming home with me.
That was over 16 years ago . . . Miz McDuffy and I have been best friends ever since. Last week Miz McDuffy looked like she was in distress so Siobhan and I took her to the vet. The tests indicated Duffy's kidneys were starting to fail. Not surprising news for a 20 year old cat. I was sent home with 2 cans of special cat food and the sad news my best friend was not going to live forever.
Miz McDuffy is doing much better now; she is happy and comfortable. When the time comes that she looks like she is suffering I will be responsible and have her put to sleep. Until then, I will cherish every second I have left with her
Our big kitty turned 14 last week! He does have some issues with his teeth and hind legs, but otherwise he's doing quite good, still purring like crazy when we go to bed and meowing when his food bowl is empty...
Jasmine and Meeko have been ADOPTED!!
Jasmine and Meeko were temporary residents of the oakville humane society in oakville, ontario, canada.
Jasmine and Meeko were surrendered to the ODHS when their owner was no longer able to care for them. Because the two have likely been together their whole lives and depend on each other, they must go to a new home together.
At 12 and 14 they only have a couple teeth between the two of them and will need to continue on a diet of soft, palatable food. In order to avoid flare-ups of Upper Respiratory infection, both Jasmine and Meeko are on a L-Lysine suppliment in their food which they should continue on in their new home. They are sweet and reserved, but talkative senior girls who are looking for a quiet home to retire in. Due to Jasmine and Meeko's needs, we would reccommend a home without other animals or small children to ensure their continued comfort and minimized stress level. They must also remain indoor only cats..
please adopt from your local animal shelter. recycled pets are the best!

My beautiful old gal is 21 now and is sitting on an old log in the garden snatching the warmth of the winter sun.
When he brings in grass entangled in his fur, he comes to me, expecting me brush it out. Which I always do, of course!
He's had hyperthyroidism for the last few years and is on daily medication. When he was younger he was a chunky cat. Nowadays he eats a lot but gets no fatter. This is him looking for his breakfast.
my parent's 17 year old cat. he looks unhappy, but hes actually become much nicer in his old age (mood swings and random attacks of the feet aside)
It becomes more difficult for Winston to move comfortably, and it has, in fact, been quite some time since he could have been described as spry. But, though his long years of enduring adventure and the outdoors have produced a coat which even on its good days we must frankly describe as disheveled, he is now kept indoors, and is washed and brushed to at least keep his erratic fur clean.
