Century Farms and Small Town Charm Along The Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County Oregon
Spent a beautiful early summer day exploring small towns and century farms along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County. Baker County is home to more than two dozen Oregon Century Farms and Ranches and the Elkhorn Scenic Byway and back roads along the way, are a great way to explore this working landscape of the American West.
Small towns along the way like Haines and Baker City offer visitors a glimpse at small town Americana at its best.
This scenic byway circles through the Elkhorn mountains of Northeast Oregon beginning and ending in Baker City and passing through small towns like Sumpter, Granite, and Haines. The drive is incredibly scenic with wide open panoramic views across the Baker valley, high alpine forests, and following pristine rivers and creeks along the way. In the winter Anthony Lakes is home to Oregon's highest base elevation ski resort. In the summer the pristine alpine lake is a fishing and camping destination. Found this doorway while on a walking tour with Sheikh Mohommed bin Rashid Center for Cultural Understanding in Dubai.
The area has been restored to earlier times, and for a small fee, you can take a 90 minute guided tour of "old Dubai". It was really a great experience.

Situated between Via del Corso and the Trevi Fountain it is a hidden gem built in the late 19th century art nouveau style. Richly decorated with beautiful frescoes and ornamentations, it is a work of art in itself – proof that Rome is truly an open-air museum – and an oasis of contemplation in the center of Rome. The galleria was built by the wealthy Sciarra family in 1885 and intended to be an elegant shopping mall. Instead it was used as the headquarters of a magazine published by the family. The walls of the gallery are decorated with illustrations of women: the first row represents women through the stages of life (from youth to married woman) and the second row features depictions of feminine virtues such as loyalty, patience, justice and chastity.

It used to be an ancient acropolis in the location, and later the site of the Knights Castle, built by the Knights of Saint John in the 14th century.
The castle contains an emblem of the Knights of Saint John over the main entrance and is located at the highest point of the Upper Town. It overlooks the harbor on one side and a small valley on the other, offering a breathtaking view of the entire town as well as of the Aegean Sea beyond it. There is also a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Kyra Panagia). This chapel occupies the highest point on the castle and offers spectacular views of the towns of Horio and Yialos.

This simple dirt-road has been good to me over the last four years since I joined Flickr. I have experienced the joys of nature throughout the inland expanse of the Florida Everglades. I have seen beautiful sunsets and an abundant variety of wildlife from birds to alligators. This dirt road is the eastern border of the Everglades, and as simple as it is, it's been an amazing road. It's shown me the beauty of nature and has given me the ability to reach out and touch it with my lens, to understand its ebbs and flows while enjoying it immensely.
