Once a thriving diamond mining town, Kolmanskop now stands as a haunting testament to time and nature’s power. Shifting desert sands have crept into abandoned homes, turning once-grand interiors into surreal, silent landscapes of decay.

A beautiful Spring day exploring the back roads of Baker County Oregon along the Elkhorn Scenic byway between Sumpter and Baker City. Some great wildlife and lots of wide-open scenery and wildflowers along the way. The USS Hornet's launch of B-25 Mitchell bombers on the first WWII bombing raid on Tokyo, Japan (April 18, 1942) were supplied their munitions by this arsenal. The ship, the planes and General Jimmy Doolittle's "Tokyo Raiders" became a famous, and part of our nation's history. Since this and adjacent buildings were shops with a lot of open space during WWII, some of those munitions could have been stored or moved thru here.

"Back-in 1849", as thousands of 'forty-niner's' -- prospectors/miners, et al -- bound for California's "gold country" plied the waters of the Carquinez Straits just a few hundred yards away, the Benicia Barracks already housed the 3rd Artillery Regiment. In 1852 it was designated Benicia Arsenal. Notable military personnel stationed there included Ulysses S. Grant, Edward Ord, and Joseph Hooker.

The Benicia Arsenal was a staging area during the Civil War for Union troops, and then during the Spanish-American War. During World War I, Benicia Arsenal gave ordnance support to all large Army installations in the Western States.

Benicia Arsenal closed in 1964, and is now redeveloped for artists and artisans. A great article... beniciaherald.me/2011/01/02/the-arsenal-a-key-military-ou...

Century Farms and Small Town Charm Along The Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County Oregon

Baker County is home to more than two dozen Oregon Century Farms and Ranches and the Elkhorn Scenic Byway and back roads along the way, are a great way to explore this working landscape of the American West.

Small towns along the way like Haines and Baker City offer visitors a glimpse at small town Americana at its best.

This scenic byway circles through the Elkhorn mountains of Northeast Oregon beginning and ending in Baker City and passing through small towns like Sumpter, Granite, and Haines.
