This vibrant photo captures the historic heart of Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, where 19th-century homes line a peaceful stretch of road under a soft winter sky. The scene is a charming mix of architectural styles: from Federal to Victorian and beyond. The colorful houses stand proudly, showcasing their unique character—faded yet inviting. In the center of the image, a red-roofed gazebo, complete with benches, adds a sense of community gathering and small-town hospitality. The American flag waves gently, a testament to the town’s rich history and enduring spirit. Harper’s Ferry has witnessed pivotal moments in American history, from John Brown’s 1859 raid to its role in the Civil War. Now, it stands as a preserved reminder of resilience and heritage, offering visitors a chance to step back in time while enjoying the present-day warmth of local shops, trails, and scenic overlooks. The leafless trees hint at the winter chill, yet their branches, reaching toward the sky, evoke a sense of optimism. This photo invites you to explore the layers of history, color, and community that make Harper’s Ferry a truly unique destination.

Gideros is mentioned in the text by Homeros. When he tells about the war of Troy in his famous work Ilieda, he also touches on the kingdom of Paphlagonia. He mentions that this kingdom covers the cities of Parthenios (Bartin), Sesamos (Amasra), Kromna (Kurucasile), Kytoros (Gideros) and Aigialos (Cide).

When I travel I like to get shots that sometimes are not typical. That being said I prefer to be thought of as a traveller not a tourist. This shot of Naples is one of those out of the way images showing the life and character of the city away from the attractions. While out with my sister to check out off-the-beaten-path locations she had scouted in the rural area of Niagara-on-the Lake, Ontario, we stopped at an imposing red barn. On speaking with the land-owner to obtain permission to shoot on his property, we learned the main portion of the barn (seen here) dates to 1888 (although the rear addition dates to 1919, when the then owner returned from the First World War (sort of apropos given we visited on November 11). The barn is in need of some restoration but the colour is simply stunning in its surroundings. Of course, the 'Red Rule' applied and here is the result. - JW

Hangman's noose, hanging from a tree in the middle of the 'ghost town' of Corlew's Silver City near Bodfish, CA.
Thanks to everyone who has made this photo my number one viewed photograph! If you are interested, please take the time to look at some of the other photographs I have on Flickr:

More About Corlew's Silver City, Bodfish, Kern County, California. Corlew's Silver City is a not a real ghost town, but a manufactured one. In the sixties and seventies, Dave and Arvilla Mills found several old, historic buildings from all over the Kern Valley region, hauled them to Bodfish and rearranged them to re-create the old western town of Silver City.
While the town itself is not real, nearly all of the buildings are authentic. Brought in from all over the area, from Keyesville to Isabella, from Whiskey Flat to Kernvale - many old towns and mining camps that are just a faded memory, or lost under the waters of nearby Lake Isabella. The Corlew family purchased the attraction and re-opened it in 1992, and have spent many hours restoring the buildings to an authentic state. Some of the buildings include the Isabella Jail, church, hotel, post office, saloon, and more.
Corlew's Silver City is waaaay off the beaten path, tucked away in the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, roughly an hour northeast of Bakersfield, a few miles from Lake Isabella. It's a bit of a faded tourist stop, a little worse for wear from the ravages of time - but that's partly by design, because the buildings are meant to be preserved in a state of 'arrested decay'. A bit of tourist-trap kitsch with the creepy mannequin displays, but still worth the visit for old western buffs and history enthusiasts.

Step into the vibrant pulse of Tokyo with this street-level view of Shibuya’s hidden gem: the narrow alleyway connecting Center Gai to Dogenzaka. While just steps away from the iconic Shibuya Crossing, this pocket of the city offers a totally different vibe—less global landmark, more everyday Tokyo. Locals and in-the-know travelers flock here for its irresistible mix of modern architecture, layered signage, and dense urban energy.
In this photo, you’ll notice the soft curves of the QFRONT annex building on the right, now home to Darts UP and FamilyMart, with its rounded corner mimicking 1980s Japanese postmodernism. On the left, the reflective curtain wall façade of the BEAM shopping complex offers a more contemporary contrast—sleek glass lines echoing Tokyo’s vertical ambitions. Above it all, the angular blue-and-cream tower rising in the distance belongs to the Shibuya Stream Excel Hotel Tokyu, completed in 2018 as part of the ongoing Shibuya redevelopment project. This juxtaposition of new development and tightly packed low-rise storefronts speaks to Tokyo’s layering of history with hypermodernity.
A closer look reveals colorful izakaya signs, multi-floor restaurants, karaoke dens, and niche bars tucked into almost every vertical inch of available space. This is Tokyo urbanism at its finest: high-density, pedestrian-first, and endlessly photogenic. The rain-slicked street adds atmosphere, while the steady foot traffic tells a story of locals shopping, eating, and living their everyday lives beneath the buzz of neon and LED.
Whether you’re here for the architecture, the street photography, or the hidden gems between the signs, this image captures a quintessential Tokyo experience that most tourists miss.
